Architectural Fragment
This fragment was identified during the survey as having come from a section of rebuilt wall above the original east window. The restoration of this section of church occured around 1865 and it is likely this is the capital or base of a column which was used in the L. medieval doorway or a side window to the chancel in the 14th C. the fragment may be 12th or 13th C in date. This project is funded by The Community Monuments Fund Awarded by The National Monuments Service, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. Ironstone fragment with drill marks
Found in a spoil heap at Esk Valley Mine near Grosmont. In mid-19th century mining the hole for the gunpowder to blast the stone was made by 'jumping' a chisel ended metal bar into the rock face to create a deep hole. Floood Street - Fragment 2
This fragment is part of an medieval window frame from Flood St. The carving shows a dragon with a womans head speared on its tail (you can see the end of the tail exit the mouth). A sleeping dog is shown in the middle followed by the creat of the martain family. The Carving shows significant weathering with spalling and cracks across the face of the stone. There are spots of lichen growth collecting around the carvings. Thee areas of paint on the bottom side of the carving, may be historical, although it has been noted that these carving were painted over in the more recent past. The paint chips which were noted include a dark green, blue and red. There is one area where paint has dripped onto the carving from a modern source.
