Dataset: Open Access: An Analysis of Publisher Copyright and Licensing Policies in Europe, 2020

<p>This dataset supports the SPARC Europe study&nbsp;that&nbsp;investigates the&nbsp;copyright retention policy amongst publishers, self-archiving policies and records publisher policies on open licensing, also as relating to the Plan S requirements on rights and licensing. There are two sets of data with supporting information that are made available under different reuse terms.</p> <p><strong>1. Data from: Beyond the print - virtual paleontology in science publishing, outreach and education

Virtual paleontology unites a variety of computational techniques and methods for the visualization and analysis of fossils. Due to their great potential and increasing availability, these methods have become immensely popular in the last decade. However, communicating the wealth of digital information and results produced by the various techniques is still exacerbated by traditional methods of publication. Transferring and processing three-dimensional information, such as interactive models or animations, into scientific publications still poses a challenge. Here, we present different methods and applications to communicate digital data in academia, outreach and education. Three-dimensional PDFs, QR codes, anaglyph stereo imaging, and rapid prototyping—methods routinely used in the engineering, entertainment, or medical industries—are outlined and evaluated for their potential in science publishing and public engagement. Although limitations remain, these are simple, mostly cost-effective, and powerful tools to create novel and innovative resources for education, public engagement, or outreach.

Data from: Quality of descriptions of treatments: a review of published randomised controlled trials

OBJECTIVES: To be useable in clinical practice, treatments studied in trials must provide sufficient information to enable clinicians and researchers to replicate. We sought to assess the completeness of treatment descriptions in published randomised controlled trials using a checklist and to determine the extent to which peer reviewers and editors comment on the quality of reporting of treatments. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Trials published in the BMJ, a general medical journal. PARTICIPANTS: 51 trials published in the BMJ were independently evaluated by two raters using the checklist. Reviewers' and editors' comments were also assessed for statements on treatment descriptions. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Proportion of trials rated as replicable (primary outcome). RESULTS: For 57% (29/51) of the papers, published treatment descriptions were not considered sufficient to allow replication. Most poorly described aspects were the actual procedures involved including the sequencing of the technique (what happened and when) and the physical or informational materials used (e.g. training materials): 53% and 43% not clear, respectively. For a third of treatments, the dose/duration of individual sessions was not clear and for a quarter the schedule (interval, frequency, duration, or timing) was not clear. Although the majority of problems were not picked up by reviewers and editors, when they were detected only about two-thirds were fixed before publication. CONCLUSIONS: Journals wanting to publish research of use to practicing health care professionals need to pay more attention to descriptions of treatments. Our checklist, may be useful for reviewers, and editors and could help ensure important details of treatments are provided before papers are in the public domain.

Publishers of journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

<p>The file contains all publishers of journals listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).</p> <p>On August 1, 2017, 9,621 journals were listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Only 32 publishers published more than 20 of these journals and thus have a quantitatively significant influence on Open Access.&nbsp;PLOS can not be found among them, but still has influence, but more qualitative than quantitative.</p> <p>These 32 publishers publish 2,950 journals, which are 31% of all journals listed in the DOAJ. At this date, the DOAJ reported 7,474 publishers, thus 0.43% of all DOAJ-listed publishers produced 31% of the journals.</p> <p>Of these 2,950 journals, 1,641 (56%) are in the hand of publishers who already dominate the market in the subscription model: e.g. Elsevier, Springer Nature (including BioMed Central, Frontiers), Wiley, SAGE, De Gruyter, Taylor &amp; Francis, OUP, Wolters Kluwer).</p> <p>The data was gathered at August 1, 2017 using the Directory of Open Access Journals web interface. The total number of journals at this point of time was 9,621.</p>

MtDNA genomes from Ranis individuals aligned with previously published ancient & modern humans

<p>The Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition in Europe is associated with the regional disappearance of Neanderthals and the spread of Homo sapiens. Archaeological evidence indicates the presence of technocomplexes at the interface of this transition, complicating our understanding of the period and the association of those with specific hominin groups. One such technocomplex where the maker is unknown is the Lincombian-Ranisian-Jerzmanowician (LRJ), which covers an area in northwestern and central Europe from the UK to Poland. This paper presents the morphological and proteomic species identification, mitochondrial DNA analysis, and direct radiocarbon dating of human remains directly associated to an LRJ assemblage at the cave site of Ilsenhöhle in Ranis (Germany).  </p>
