Life-cycle assessment of hydrogen systems: A systematic review and meta-regression analysis

<p>The high expectations placed on hydrogen as a clean fuel have led to a growing amount of life-cycle assessment (LCA) studies of hydrogen-related systems. The multiple methodological choices and diverse technical characteristics contribute to a broad set of practices, resulting in significant variability even among similar systems. This study sets the basis for the development of harmonised guidelines for LCA of fuel cells and hydrogen (FCH) systems by analysing current LCA practices. The reviewed literature suggests that previous efforts on harmonisation of LCA methodological choices have led to common practices for certain choices, e.g. functional unit. However, an incomplete definition of some parameters hinders the interpretability of LCA results and hides the potential sources of variability in terms of LCA estimates. In this work, in addition to a systematic literature review of LCA of FCH systems to identify current practices and gaps, sources of variability were investigated for the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of hydrogen production systems through a meta-regression analysis (MRA). The MRA results show that the variability of LCA estimates in the literature can be explained by a limited set of qualitative (e.g. implementation of CO<sub>2</sub> capture, among other technological choices) and quantitative (e.g. electricity consumption for hydrogen processing) variables. Although a certain progress towards common methodological choices in LCA of FCH systems was identified, further work is still needed to harmonise practices, as well as to extend the application of the proposed MRA approach to other life-cycle indicators for both identification of main drivers and harmonisation of LCA impact scores.</p>

Social life cycle sustainability assessment of dried tomato products based on material and process selection through multi-criteria decision making

<h3>BACKGROUND</h3> <p>Tomatoes are a significant product of the Mediterranean region and a crucial component of the Mediterranean diet. The formulation of dried tomato products enriched with proteins and bioactive compounds could be a strategic approach to promote adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Six different novel tomato products were analyzed using different protein enrichment sources (pea proteins and leaf proteins) and drying technologies (hot-air dryer, microwave vacuum dryer, and conventional dryer). The novelty of this approach lies in combining product-specific criteria with global societal factors across their life cycles. Using 21 criteria and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) survey of experts, the social sustainability score for each product was determined through a multi-criteria assessment.</p> <h3>RESULTS</h3> <p>The tomato product's life cycles have minimal regional impacts on unemployment, access to drinking water, sanitation, or excessive working hours. However, they affect discrimination, migrant labor, children's education, and access to hospital beds significantly. The study identified nutritional quality as the top criterion, with the most sustainable design being a tomato bar enriched with pea protein and processed using microwave vacuum drying.</p> <h3>CONCLUSION</h3> <p>The study revealed that integrating sensory and nutrient compounds into social sustainability assessments improves food sustainability and provides a practical roadmap for social life cycle assessments of food products. It emphasized the importance of considering global social issues when reformulating Mediterranean products to ensure long-term adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Queen-worker conflict can drive the evolution of social polymorphism and split sex ratios in facultatively eusocial life-cycles

<p>Hamilton's idea that haplodiploidy favors the evolution of altruism – the haplodiploidy hypothesis -- relies on the relatedness asymmetry between the sexes, caused by the sex-specific ploidies. Theoretical work on the consequences of relatedness asymmetries has significantly improved our understanding of sex-allocation and intra-colony conflicts, but the importance of haplodiploidy for the evolution of altruism came to be seen as minor. However, recently it was shown that haplodiploidy can strongly favor the evolution of eusociality, provided additional "preadaptations" are also present, such as the production of multiple broods per season and maternal ability to bias offspring sex ratios. These results were obtained assuming no influence of workers on the sex ratio, even though worker control of the sex ratio is known to occur. Here we model the evolution of sex-specific fratricide as a mechanism of worker control over the sex ratio. We show that fratricide can facilitate the initial evolution of helping. However, fratricide can also hamper the evolution of unconditional help. Instead, social polymorphism evolves, a mixture of helping and dispersing offspring. Finally, we show that the co-evolution of sex-allocation strategies of workers (fratricide) and queens leads to a split production of the sexes, with some colonies specializing in males and others in females. Thus, the model predicts that fratricide spawns a diversity of co-existing life cycles that strongly vary in degree of sociality and sex ratios.</p>
