Data from: A quantitative theory of gamma synchronization in macaque V1

Gamma-band synchronization coordinates brief periods of excitability in oscillating neuronal populations to optimize information transmission during sensation and cognition. Commonly, a stable, shared frequency over time is considered a condition for functional neural synchronization. Here, we demonstrate the opposite: instantaneous frequency modulations are critical to regulate phase relations and synchronization. In monkey visual area V1, nearby local populations driven by different visual stimulation showed different gamma frequencies. When similar enough, these frequencies continually attracted and repulsed each other, which enabled preferred phase relations to be maintained in periods of minimized frequency difference. Crucially, the precise dynamics of frequencies and phases across a wide range of stimulus conditions was predicted from a physics theory that describes how weakly coupled oscillators influence each other's phase relations. Hence, the fundamental mathematical principle of synchronization through instantaneous frequency modulations applies to gamma in V1, and is likely generalizable to other brain regions and rhythms.

Data from: Metabolic theory predicts animal self-thinning

1. The Metabolic Theory of Ecology (MTE) predicts observed patterns in ecology based on metabolic rates of individuals. The theory is influential but also criticized for a lack of firm empirical evidence confirming MTE's quantitative predictions of processes, e.g. outcome of competition, at population or community level. 2. Self-thinning is a well-known population level phenomenon among plants, but a much less studied phenomenon in animal populations and no consensus exists on what a universal thinning slope for animal populations might be, or if it exists. 3. The goal of this study was to use animal self-thinning as a tool to test population-level predictions from MTE, by analyzing (i) if self-thinning can be induced in populations of house crickets (Acheta domesticus) and (ii) if the resulting thinning trajectories can be predicted from metabolic theory, using estimates of the species-specific metabolic rate of A. domesticus 4. I performed a laboratory study where the growth of A. domesticus was followed, from hatching until emergence as adults, in 71 cohorts of five different starting densities. 5. 96% of all cohorts in the three highest starting densities showed evidence of self-thinning, with estimated thinning slopes in general being remarkably close to that expected under metabolic constraints: A cross-sectional analysis of all data showing evidence of self-thinning produced an OLS slope of -1.11, exactly that predicted from specific metabolic allometry of Acheta domesticus. This result is furthermore supported by longitudinal analyses, allowing for independent responses within cohorts, producing a mean OLS slope across cohorts of -1.13 and a fixed effect LMEM slope of -1.09. Sensitivity analysis showed that these results are robust to how the criterion for on-going self-thinning was defined. Finally, also as predicted by metabolic theory, temperature had a negative effect on the thinning intercept, producing an estimate of the activation energy identical to that suggested by MTE. 6. This study demonstrates a direct link between the metabolic rate of individuals and a population-level ecological process and as such provides strong support for research that aims to integrate body mass, via its effect on metabolism, consumption and competition, into models of populations and communities.

Data from: BNPd single-atom catalysts for selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene: a density functional theory study

The mechanisms of selective hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene on B11N12Pd single-atom catalyst (SAC) was investigated through the density functional theory by using 6-31++G basis set. We studied the adsorption characteristics of H2 and C2H2, and simulated the reaction mechanism. We have discovered that H2 absolutely dissociative chemisorption on single atom Pd and formed the B11N12Pd(2H) dihydride complex and then proceed the hydrogenation reaction with C2H2. The hydrogenation reaction of acetylene onto the B11N12Pd complies with the Horiuti-Polanyi mechanism, and the energy barrier as low as 26.55 kcal mol-1. The low desorption energy of ethylene, high ethylene hydrogenation activation energy can ensure the B11N12Pd SAC has high selectivity. Meanwhile it also has a higher selectivity than many bimetallic alloy single-atom catalyst.

Can evolutionary theories of dispersal and senescence predict postrelease survival, dispersal, and body condition of a reintroduced threatened mammal?

<ol> <li>Theories of dispersal and senescence (or ageing) predict that dispersal, and ongoing survival and body condition, are influenced by evolutionary drivers, along with intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Such theories are relevant to translocations of animals where high mortality, loss of body condition, and dispersal beyond the area of release are commonly reported. However, these theories have rarely been tested using data from translocations.</li> <li>We explore whether theories of dispersal and senescence, together with biological knowledge and management interventions, can predict rates of post-release dispersal, survival and change in body condition of a translocated endangered meso-predator, the eastern quoll <i>Dasyurus viverrinus</i>.</li> <li>Captive-bred quolls (n = 60) from three sanctuaries were translocated to an unfenced, predator-managed reserve (Booderee National Park) over 2 years (2018, 2019). Survival, dispersal and body mass were monitored via GPS / VHF tracking and targeted trapping for 45 days post-release.</li> <li>We found support for the 'social subordinate' hypothesis, with smaller quolls dispersing further. Consistent with theories of senescence and the biology of our species, survival was marginally greater for females, and females regained losses in body mass in both years following release. In contrast, males recovered body condition in the first but not the second release as this coincided with breeding. Quolls that originated from the mainland sanctuary were on average heavier at release and, after accounting for weight, dispersed further.</li> <li> <i>Synthesis and applications</i>. Using theory to test outcomes of wildlife translocations can provide insights into patterns across taxa and under different conditions, enabling useful improvements to future fauna translocations. This allows for better predictions to be made about the likelihood of success from proposed translocations, changes to planning to improve outcomes (e.g. modifying sex ratios, individual selection and release cohort), and improved animal welfare as fewer animals are subjected to trials.</li> </ol>

Density functional theory study of Mobius boroncarbon-nitride as potential CH4, H2S, NH3, COCl2 and CH3OH gas sensor

<p>The interesting properties of Mobius structure and Boron-Carbon-Nitride inspired this research to study different characteristics of Mobius Boron-Carbon-Nitride (MBCN) nanoribbon. The structural stability, vibrational, electrical, and optical properties are analyzed using the density functional theory. The gas sensing ability of the modeled MBCN structure was also studied for CH<sub>4</sub>, H<sub>2</sub>S, NH<sub>3</sub>, COCl<sub>2</sub>, and CH<sub>3</sub>OH gases. The negative adsorption energy and alteration of electronic bandgap verified that MBCN is very sensitive toward the selected gases. The complex structures showed a high absorption coefficient with strong chemical potential and 7 ps- 0.3 ms recovery time. The negative change in entropy signifies that all the complex structures were thermodynamically stable. Among the selected gases, the MBCN showed the strongest interaction with CH<sub>3</sub>OH gas.</p>
