Navigating human-sloth bear encounters and attacks in Nepal's unprotected forests

<p><span>Human-sloth bear conflict</span><span> is common throughout most areas where sloth bears co-occur with humans. Altercations are more prevalent in multi-use forest landscapes outside protected areas (PAs). Sloth bears are among the key species linked to human-wildlife conflicts in Nepal's southern region, but comprehensive information to guide safety and mitigation efforts remain scarce. We collected questionnaire-based interview data on sloth bear encounters and attacks, available from 1990&ndash;2021, around the Trijuga forest, an important sloth bear habitat outside Nepal's PAs. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and regression analysis. Within this</span> <span>time period, 66 human-sloth bear encounters involving 69 human individuals were recorded, with an annual average of 2.06 (SD = 1.48) encounters and 1.75 (SD = 1.34) attacks. Encounters primarily involved working-age men (25&ndash;55 years old), whose primary occupation was farming and who frequented the forest regularly. They typically occurred between 0900 and 1500, inside forests, and in habitats with poor land cover visibility. </span><span>Fifty-six encounters resulted in attacks by bears that injured 59 people, with a fatality rate of 8.47%. Victims of bear attacks frequently had serious injuries, especially to the head and neck areas of the body. Serious injuries were more likely to occur to lone individuals than to people who were in groups of two or more. We suggest the identification of conflict-risk habitats through a participatory mapping approach and outreach programs for local communities to enhance effective human-sloth bear conflict management in Nepal&rsquo;s unprotected forests. </span></p>

Tail autotomy works as a pre-capture defense by deflecting attacks

<p>Caudal autotomy is a dramatic antipredator adaptation where prey shed their tail in order to escape capture by a predator. The mechanism underlying the effectiveness of caudal autotomy as a pre-capture defense has not been thoroughly investigated. We tested two non-exclusive hypotheses, that caudal autotomy works by providing the predator with a 'consolation prize' that makes it break off the hunt to consume the shed tail, and the deflection hypothesis, where the autotomy event directs predator attacks to the autotomized tail enabling prey escape. Our experiment utilized domestic dogs Canis familiaris as model predator engaged to chase a snake-like stimulus with a detachable tail. The tail was manipulated to vary in length (long vs. short) and conspicuousness (green vs. blue), with the prediction that dog attacks on the tail should increase with length under the consolation prize hypothesis, and conspicuous color under the deflection hypothesis. The tail was attacked on 35% of trials, supporting the potential for pre-capture autotomy to offer anti-predator benefits. Dogs were attracted to the tail when it was conspicuously colored, but not when it was longer. This supports the idea that deflection of predator attacks through visual effects is the prime antipredator mechanism underlying the effectiveness of caudal autotomy as opposed to provision of a consolation prize meal.</p>

Raw Data: Enhancing Stroke Risk Prediction in Patients with Transient Ischemic Attack: Insights from a Prospective Cohort Study Implementing Fast-Track Care

<p>Background and aims: Fast-track care have been proved to reduce the short-term risk of stroke after transient ischemic attack (TIA). We aimed to investigate stroke risk and to characterize short-and long-term stroke predictors in a large cohort of TIA patients undergoing fast-track management.Methods: Prospective study, enrolling consecutive TIA patients admitted to a Northern Italy emergency department from August 2010 to December 2017. All patients underwent fasttrack care within 24 hours of admission. The primary outcome was defined as the first stroke recurrence at 90 days, 12 and 60 months after TIA. Stroke incidence with 95% confidence interval (CI) at each timepoint was calculated using Poisson regression. Predictors of stroke recurrence were evaluated with Cox regression analysis. The number needed to treat (NNT) of fast-track care in preventing 90-day stroke recurrence in respect to the estimates based on baseline ABCD2 score was also calculated.We enrolled 1035 patients (54.2% males). Stroke incidence was low throughout the follow-up with rates of 2.2% [95% CI 1.4%-3.3%] at 90 days, 2.9% [95% CI 1.9%-4.2%] at 12 months and 7.1% [95% CI 5.4%-9.0%] at 60 months. Multiple TIA, speech disturbances and presence of ischemic lesion at neuroimaging predicted stroke recurrence at each timepoint. Male sex and increasing age predicted 90-day and 60-month stroke risk, respectively. Hypertension was associated with higher 12-month and 60-month stroke risk.No specific TIA etiology predicted higher stroke risk throughout the follow-up. The NNT for fast-track care in preventing 90-day stroke was ] in the overall cohort and 6.8 [95% CI 4.6-13.5] in patients with baseline ABCD2 of 6 to 7.Our findings support the effectiveness of fast-track care in preventing both short-and long-term stroke recurrence after TIA.</p>

Data augmentation with Generative AI for DoW attack detection in serverless architectures

<p>Serverless computing is one of the latest paradigms in cloud computing. It offers a framework for the development of event-driven applications whose functions are executed in a scalable environment provided by the corresponding cloud platform. In this way, resources are obtained on demand, paying only for the time the function is running. This new model has new vulnerabilities and, therefore, new types of cybersecurity attacks. However, there are still not enough transaction datasets for serverless systems with a sufficient amount of data to develop advanced detection methods for this type of threat. Therefore, we present this dataset that has been built with generative AI to advance the development of models that can effectively deal with these threats.</p>
