Canopy Trimming Experiment (CTE) plant seedling measurements

Seedlings were measured before and after treatments to determine how alterations in canopy openness and detritus affect seedling densities and life histories (growth, mortality, recruitment). It was predicted that plots experiencing canopy openness with detritus removed would have the quickest increase in seedlings (recruitment and growth), especially of early successional (light demanding) species, such as Cecropia. Seedlings in plots that received no canopy manipulation but had detritus deposited is predicted to have near-total mortality initially (low light and high physical inhibition due to detritus). Treatment plots experiencing both canopy manipulation and addition of detritus would initially experience near-total mortality, with some light demanding seedlings establishing and growing through detritus with time. Luquillo canopy trimming experiment - meteorological data, soil sensor, and cannopy measurements

This data publication contains average daily means for field and satellite data from 3 treated and 3 control plots from the Canopy Trimming Experiment (CTE) located near El Verde Field Station (419 meters; 18°20’ N, 65°49’ W) in the Luquillo Experimental Forest (El Yunque National Forest), Puerto Rico collected from 2003 through 2019. In spring of 2005 (CTE1) and December of 2014 (CTE2), in 0.09 hectare (ha) square plots near the El Verde Field Station the forest canopy was trimmed and the canopy debris was littered to the forest floor. The plot size and trim amounts were based on the patch disturbance after the two most recent hurricanes before 2017, both category 3 hurricanes at the location of El Verde: Hugo in September 1989, and Georges in September 1998 (Zimmerman et al. 2014). Details of the trimming and littering treatment, as well as the biotic response to the 2005 experiment have been extensively documented (Richardson et al. 2010; Shiels et al. 2014, 2015; Shiels and González 2014). The data were collected in the inner 0.04 ha quadrants of the 0.09 ha trimmed plots to minimize edge effects. There were 3 sets of control and treated plots, with each set near El Verde field station. Field data include: solar radiation, throughfall, air temperature, soil temperature, relative humidity shallow soil, volumetric water content, soil profile volumetric water content, canopy leaf saturation, litter leaf saturation, and above canopy air temperature. As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor glacial mass balance and meltwater flow. This data package contains total mass balance changes at each stake measured on six glaciers (Canada, Commonwealth, Hughes, Suess, Howard, and Taylor) in Taylor Valley and one glacier (Adams) in Miers Valley, all of which are located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica. These values are the result of an analysis of the raw data presented in other data files (glacier stake heights, snow depths, and snow densities). Included here for each stake is the total water equivalent mass change. The standard deviation or the range for each total is given. Most measurements began during the 93-94 field season. Adams measurements were established during the 14-15 field season. Measurements are ongoing except at Hughes and Suess Glaciers where monitoring ceased following the 08-09 field season. Integrated measurements of soil micro-invertebrate abundance and associated physicochemical properties from the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993–2022)

This data package compiles three decades (1993–2022) of soil micro-invertebrate abundance data and associated physicochemical measurements collected as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project in Antarctica. Variables include soil micro-invertebrate counts and species richness, along with associated soil physicochemical properties, including gravimetric moisture content, pH, electrical conductivity, soil organic carbon, ammonium, and nitrate. Data originate from both long-term core monitoring efforts and targeted opportunistic sampling campaigns across multiple valleys, including Arena, Beacon, Pearse, Taylor, Victoria, and Wright Valleys. Sampling locations span a range of geomorphic and ecological settings, providing broad spatial and temporal coverage of soil conditions across the Dry Valleys ecosystem. Data were curated to represent the most comprehensive and spatially diverse records available while minimizing sampling bias across years and study types. These integrated measurements provide a valuable resource for understanding the drivers of soil micro-invertebrate abundance and habitat suitability and serve as a foundation for future analyses of long-term ecological change and species distribution modeling in polar desert soils.

Soil Lake Inundation Moat Experiment (SLIME): Physical, chemical, and biological measurements from planktonic water columns, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2018-2020)

The Soil Lake Inundation Moat Experiment (SLIME) was developed by the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project to investigate the ecological function of lake moats in Antarctica. These moats form during the austral summer when the margins of permanently ice-covered, closed-basin lakes melt, creating open-water zones, or ‘moats,’ between the shoreline and the thick (3-5 m) perennial ice cover. To study these habitats, sampling transects were established on the north and south shores of Lake Fryxell and the East Lobe of Lake Bonney. This data package includes three seasons of physical, chemical, and biological measurements from the planktonic water columns of these lakes, collected from SLIME transects between January 2018 and January 2020. Parameters include water temperature, conductivity, ion and nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a concentrations, as well as fluorescence and photochemical efficiencies for major algal classes. NCBI accession numbers are also provided for the microbial sequence data associated with each sample.

Thermistor chain measurements from West Lake Bonney, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2014-2019)

To capture year-round temperature variability in West Lake Bonney (WLB), Taylor Valley, Antarctica, we deployed two self-logging RBR Concerto T10 thermistor strings as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project. The thermistor strings were deployed beneath the permanent ice cover from December 2014 to November 2015 at two locations on the western side of the lake. In November 2015, both strings were relocated toward the centre of the glacier terminus to better capture potential subglacial inflows. Each thermistor string contained 10 sensors spaced at 1.44 m intervals. This data package includes 1-minute interval temperature measurements from all four deployment sites, along with daily averages compiled in a single file. Data from three thermistors were flagged as questionable based on comparisons with long-term MCM LTER CTD casts; these values remain in the dataset but are flagged to allow for adjustment during data processing.

Lake Fryxell continuous benthic dissolved oxygen and temperature measurements, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, November 2023 to December 2024

To examine benthic dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics in Lake Fryxell, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, DO and temperature were continuously measured near the sediment–water interface at ~8.8 m depth from November 2023 to December 2024. A PME miniDOT® logger was deployed on the lake floor at 8.82 m depth, recording every 15 minutes from 9 November 2023 to 16 December 2024. An Onset HOBO® DO logger, buoyed slightly above the sediment at 8.80 m depth, recorded at the same 15-minute interval from 9 November 2023 to 6 August 2024. The shorter deployment period reflects the six-month lifespan of the HOBO optical sensor.

Lake Fryxell photosynthetically active radiation measurements, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica

Under-ice and water column photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was measured in Lake Fryxell, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, on 18 November 2012, 26 December 2022, and 17 January 2025 to track changes in irradiance transmission over time. In 2012 and 2022, a diver-deployed LI-COR LI-192R quantum sensor connected to a LI-1400 data logger recorded PAR (µmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹) beneath the ice along radial transects from the dive hole, while simultaneous measurements at the lake surface were used to calculate percent transmission. In 2025, a PME miniPAR logger (µmol photons cm⁻² s⁻¹) mounted on a Chasing M2 ProMax remotely operated vehicle (ROV) collected under-ice PAR, with concurrent surface measurements using a LI-192R sensor to calculate percent transmission.

This data package includes measurements from the East Lake Bonney “blue box” lake monitoring platform (ELBBB), established during the 1994-1995 austral summer in East Lake Bonney, Taylor Valley. Parameters include air and water temperature, surface and underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), continuous stage (lake level), ice surface ablation, and, beginning in the 2022-2023 austral summer, dissolved oxygen (DO), reported as percent saturation due to the unavailability of continuous salinity measurements required for computing concentration. Data are provided at high frequency (typically 15-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data. As there is no universally accepted standard for handling gaps in time-series data, users are encouraged to use the high-frequency data and establish their own criteria for acceptable data completeness to minimize potential bias.

Parameters include water temperature, surface and underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), continuous stage (lake level), and ice surface ablation. Data are provided at high frequency (typically 15-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data.
