Patterns in litterfall production from 12 forested sites along an elevation gradient in Pico del Este

We measured litterfall from 12 sites along an upper elevation gradient every two weeks from 1994 to present. Samples are being used to estimate the litterfall productivity over time and space, identify the impacts of periodic events, and help us understand the drivers of ecosystem and biogeochemical processes with climate and vegetation change. Bisley 40 X 40 grid vegetation and site characteristics

Relationships between landforms, soil nutrients, forest structure, and the relative importance of different disturbances were quantified in two subtropical wet steepland watersheds in Pueno Rico. Ridges had fewer landslides and treefall gaps, more above-ground biomass, older aged stands, and greater species richness than other landscape positions. Ridge soils had relatively low quantities of exchangeable bases but high soil organic matter, acidity and exchangeable iron. Valley sites had higher frequencies of disturbance, less biomass, younger aged stands, lower species richness and soils with more exchangeable bases. Soil N, P, and K were distributed relatively independently of geomorphic setting, but were significantly related to the composition and age of vegetation. On a watershed basis, hurricanes were the dominant natural disturbance in the turnover of individuals, biomass, and forest canopy. However. turnover by the mortality of individuals that die without creating canopy openings was faster than the turnover by any natural disturbance. Only in riparian areas was forest turnover by treefall gaps faster than turnover by hurricanes. The same downslope mass transfer that links soil forming processes across the landscape also influences the distribution of landslides, treefall gaps, and the structure and composition of the forest. One consequence of these interactions is that the greatest aboveground biomass occurs on ridges where the soil nutrient pools are the smallest. Geomorphic stability, edaphic conditions, and biotic adaptations apparently override the importance of spatial variations in soil nutrients in the accumulation of above-ground biomass at this site. Analysis of the planning process for a new park in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the Upper Harbor Terminal site with planners and community members focusing on redevelopment that addresses green gentrification concerns, 2019 to 2021

This dataset is from a study focuses on the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s planning process for a new park at the Upper Harbor Terminal (UHT) site - a defunct barge-to-rail terminal on the Mississippi River being redeveloped with a mix of housing, commercial uses, and park space (see "UHT_location_map in Other Entities). While the redevelopment affords an opportunity to remediate pollution and provide new greenspace, a high portion of nearby residents are low-income and housing-cost burdened, raising concerns among community members about gentrification. As a counter to green gentrification, the concept of “Just Green Enough” (JGE) became a common theme around the UHT development process. JGE aims to center community-centered greening efforts with broader community development goals in mind (i.e. living-wage jobs and affordable housing). Amidst growing community pressure, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) appointed a Community Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC was tasked with meeting monthly for in-depth deliberations (facilitated by planning staff and external consultants) with the goal of making final park design and programming recommendations, which planning staff would present to the MPRB Board of Commissioners. The Upper Harbor Terminal CAC consisted of 16 members, mostly residents of North Minneapolis and Northeast, and many with a background in nonprofit, environmental, or community organizing work. Meetings began in July 2019 and lasted nearly two years until in May 2021. This dataset includes the qualitative codebooks for the CAC meetings, accompanied by the meeting minutes and other documents related to the UHT planning process. The transcripts of semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in the UHT planning process were also analyzed and coded, but specific quotations are omitted from this dataset to protect the privacy the participants.

Surface and porewater chemistry and sulfur stable isotpes for alpine and subalpine wetland sites, 2021.

To understand patterns in aqueous biogeochemistry of wetlands at Niwot Ridge, samples were collected and analyzed for dissolved anions and stable isotopes of sulfur in 2021. Samples were collected from eight wetland sites representing three wetland types, from the Saddle into the subalpine. At each site, tension lysimeters were placed at visible surface inflow and outflow paths to collect porewater. Water samples were collected from the tension lysimeters and surface pools during four time points through the summer season. Water samples were measured for a suite of dissolved anions using ion chromatography, including dissolved chloride, nitrate, and sulfate. Samples were also measured for dissolved organic carbon. Sulfur from one surface water sample from each site at each time point was precipitated as barium sulfate, and precipitations were analyzed for stable sulfur isotope ratio (δ^34S-SO4^2-) at the Center for Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. Data was used in conjunction with soil biogeochemistry data from 2020 to evaluate patterns in reactants among wetland types.
