Leiston Abbey East Wall Buttress
Leiston Abbey was a Premonstatensian foundation in Suffolk, England, dissolved in the C16th. As with many such structures, valuable stone cladding was plundered for re-use in the locality. This example at Leiston shows an external buttress on the east end of the abbey with the rubble and flint infill that is typical of this area contrasting with cladding that remains in situ. Mountbellew Wall Garden NIAH 30404617
This project received funding from the Heritage Council through the Creative Ireland Programme 2019 This 18th C. Walled Garden was once part of the Bellew estate. The Mountbellew Heritage and Tourism Network want to conserve the large limestone walls that surround the gardens, and to restore some of the original features of the gardens and to establish allotments to help people to discover the heritage of the locality and to provide opportunities for employment and tourism in the region. This combination of ground based photogrammetry and drone survey were commisioned by the Group through Adopt a Monument, a project funded by the Heritage Council and Creative Ireland. Chariot wall relief, SW Palace Nimrud
Gypsum wall panel relief: one of series of wall panels with disconnected scenes; above is part of a battle and below the royal chariot waits behind Tiglath-pileser III who was shown on another panel. The band at the bottom of the upper fragment bears two columns of inscription.When joined with fragment BM. 132306, the complete scene shows the king's chariot, led by two men, moving ⇨. In the richly ornamented chariot stands the charioteer holding the reins and a whip. The horses, with the usual elaborately decorated trappings, are held by two bearded men, wearing a fringed tunic and a belt in which hangs the sword. In front of them stands a beardless officer apparently carrying the king's weapons, the bow, its upper end shaped as a duck's head, a quiver, and a mace. Mossy Stone Wall 01 Low
This was captured as part of a set on an overcast day in March 2021, on location in the foothills of the Pennines, UK. A 16km round trip by foot to the location, 2000+ photos captured during the day and around 38hrs to process and sort all of the data from the shoot. There is a high-resolution version available on ArtStation. (Link incoming) The data output has not been post-processed beyond a quick outlier removal. There will still be outliers and the mesh will require retopology for production use. The UVs are parameterised atlases, but the high res texture is enough to bake out a decent map from IMO. Data from: Preparation of isolated guard cells, containing cell walls, from Vicia faba
<p>Stomatal movement, initiated by specialized epidermal cells known as guard cells (GCs), plays a pivotal role in plant gas exchange and water use efficiency. Despite protocols existing for isolating GCs through proplasting for carrying out biochemical, physiological, and molecular studies, protocols for isolating GCs with their cell walls still intact have been lacking in the literature. In this paper, we introduce a method for the isolation of complete GCs from <em>Vicia faba </em>and show their membrane to remain impermeable through propidium iodide staining. This methodology enables further in-depth analyses into the cell wall composition of GCs, facilitating our understanding of structure-function relationship governing reversible actuation within cells.</p>
Negative allometry of leaf xylem conduit diameter and double-wall thickness: implications for implosion safety
<p>Xylem conduits have lignified walls to resist crushing pressures. The thicker the double-wall (<em>T</em>) relative to its diameter (<em>D</em>), the greater the implosion safety. Having safer conduits may incur higher costs and reduced flow, while having less resistant xylem may lead to catastrophic collapse under drought. Although recent studies have shown that conduit implosion commonly occurs in leaves, little is known about how leaf xylem scales <em>T</em> versus <em>D</em> to trade off safety, flow efficiency, mechanical support, and cost.</p> <p>We measured <em>T</em> and <em>D</em> in > 7,000 conduits of 122 species to investigate how <em>T</em> versus <em>D</em> scaling varies across clades, habitats, growth forms, leaf and vein sizes.</p> <p>As conduits become wider, their double-cell walls become proportionally thinner, resulting in a negative allometry between <em>T</em> and <em>D</em>. That is, narrower conduits, which are usually subjected to more negative pressures, are proportionally safer than wider ones. Higher implosion safety (i.e higher <em>T/D</em> ratios) was found in asterids, arid habitats, shrubs, small leaves, and minor veins.</p> <p>Despite the strong allometry, implosion safety does not clearly trade off with other measured leaf functions, suggesting that implosion safety at whole-leaf level cannot be easily predicted solely by individual conduits' anatomy.</p>
