Snow depth data for saddle snowfence, 1992 - ongoing.

A snowfence was built in 1993 on the Niwot Ridge Saddle grid to determine the effects of changes in snowpack on a number of variables. The study area was 60m x 125m. Snow depths were measured at each of 147 points within the snowfence experiment area and at 6 control locations outside of but near the snowfence experiment area. Of the 147 points, 84 were located on the leeward (east) side of the snowfence, 56 were located on the windward (west) side of the snowfence, and 7 were located along the snowfence itself. These measurements were made weekly to biweekly. Sampling locations were each given a unique point identification number so that these data could be incorporated into the Saddle GIS. The snowfence was oriented in a north/south direction and was 60 m long. Each of the point identification numbers had a coordinate within the experiment area. The first number of the coordinate was the distance in m from the snowfence in an east/west direction, negative numbers being west of the snowfence and positive numbers being east of the fence. The second number in the coordinate was the distance in m from the southern terminus of the snowfence in a northerly direction.

Climate data for C1 data loggers (CR23X and CR1000), 2000 - ongoing, daily.

Climatological data were collected from the C1 climate station on Niwot Ridge (3018 m elevation) throughout the year. From 2000-06-24 to 2013-03-25, data were recorded using a Campbell Instruments CR23X data logger. Starting 2013-03-27, data were recorded using a Campbell Instruments CR1000 data logger. Maximum and minimum values were recorded instantaneously, with a sampling interval of 5 seconds. Daily means and totals were calculated from 17,280 individual measurements. The CR23X logger was programmed to generate both hourly and daily output. The CR1000 logger generated daily, hourly, and minute data until 2014-09-10, when these time periods were discontinued and only 10 minute raw data were collected.

Air temperature data for C1 chart recorder, 1952 - ongoing.

Temperature data were collected on a daily time-scale from the C1 climate station (3018 m) since 1952. Over time various circumstances have led to days with missing values. Some missing values were estimated from redundant sensors and nearby climate stations using various methods. Greenland 1987 was a basis for the methodology. However when it was not possible to use this methodology, new methods were developed.

Precipitation data for Saddle chart recorder, 1981 - ongoing.

Precipitation data were collected on a daily time-scale from the Saddle climate station (3525 m) since 1981. Over time, various circumstances have led to days with missing values. Some of these values were estimated from nearby climate stations for years up to 2008 using the methods described in METHODS.

Pika demography data for west knoll and Indian Peaks wilderness, 2008 - ongoing.

Pikas are captured, anesthetized, marked with colored ear-tags, non-lethally sampled, and released at point of capture during June-October. Study sites include a gradient of elevation and slope aspect, allowing a comparative study of pika response to variation in climate and sub-surface microclimate. Daily variation in snow cover and sub-surface temperatures are measured using data loggers placed within the territories of marked pikas. Focal territories are revisited at least once to characterize available vegetation via transect sampling and at least annually to service data loggers and record pika survival. Samples collected for genetic and physiological studies include ectoparasites, blood, saliva, urine, feces and hair as well as records of sex, stage, reproductive status, weight, foot length and body temperature.

Plant species list for Niwot Ridge and Green Lakes Valley, 1970 - ongoing.

A plant species list was created for Niwot Ridge and Green Lakes Valley from species identified in those areas by NWT scientists, working primarily at the Saddle and Martinelli sites. Additions to this list included species identified by Komarkova (1979) in the Indian Peaks Wilderness area but not on Niwot Ridge or in the Green Lakes Valley because of the likelihood that those species might exist within the LTER research area. Additions to the list were also provided by Terry Theodose, Leeanne Lestak, Teresa Nettleton, Susan Sherrod, Laura Mujica-Crapanzano (2004), Hope Humphries (2006), and Jane G. Smith (2019-2025). The list was revised to remove duplicate entries, correct typos, and resolve synonymy problems. Species and non-species categories received USDA PLANTS database names and codes.

PIE LTER dissolved nutrient and particulate concentrations of freshwater inputs to the Plum Island estuarine system, Massachusetts, taken approximately monthly.

Multi-year data of water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments, was determined from monthly grab samples taken at watershed inputs to the Plum Island Sound Estuary. Sampling sites were the Ipswich River (Sylvania Dam, Ipswich, MA), Parker River Dam (Central St, Newbury, MA), Egypt River (Ipswich, MA) Mill River (Newbury, MA), Muddy Run (Ipswich, MA), Little River (Newbury, MA). These nutrient concentrations are then used in conjunction with USGS discharge data (recorded at gages in the Parker River at Byfield, MA and the Ipswich River at Ipswich, MA) to calculate annual nutrient loading to the Plum Island Sound Estuary, coming over each dam. Annual yield is also calculated for both dams. Refer to file WAT-VA-Load for loading data.

Multi-year transects, beginning in 1995, of the Parker River Plum Island Sound Estuary conducted at dawn and dusk, containing dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature, percent saturation, pH, salinity, DIC and pCO2 measurements. Differences between dawn and dusk measurements can be used to determine the water metabolism and corresponding estimates of gross primary production, total system respiration and net ecosystem production.

PIE LTER surface elevation table (SET) pin height data from twelve marsh sites in northeast Massachusetts.

Surface elevation table (SET) measurements from 26 SETs at 9 marsh sites in the Plum Island Sound Long-Term Ecological Research Site in the Great Marsh, Massachusetts. SET measurements are useful for determining the relative elevation change of marsh sediments. Precise measurements of sediment elevation in marshes is useful for determining rates of elevation change in response to changes in sea level.
