MRI-based sensing of pH-responsive content release from mesoporous silica nanoparticles
<p>A proof of principle study toward developing a novel methodology which could be applicable for a non-invasive monitoring of the release of cargo molecules from therapeutic and diagnostic nanoparticles, as well as for possible monitoring of tissue pH variations. This was achieved by quantifying changes in longitudinal relaxation time (T<sub>1</sub>) before and after the pH-responsive release of contrast agents, for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), from the pores of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). The pores were filled with the FDA-approved contrast agent Gadobutrol (GdB), and its retention inside the pores ensured by covalent attachment of β-cyclodextrin monoaldehyde to hydrazine-functionalized MSN, through acidification-cleavable hydrazone linkage. The release kinetics of GdB was measured by fluorescence spectroscopy which revealed that the release of the contrast agent was enhanced at pH 5.0 in comparison to the release at pH 6.0 and 7.4. Furthermore, the changes in T<sub>1</sub>, occurring in response to the enhanced release of GdB from the pores of MSN at weakly acidic conditions, were successfully demonstrated by MRI measurements. It is envisioned that this approach using contrast agent-loaded nanoparticles before the treatment with the drug-filled analogs, could be applied in the future for tracking the locations and efficacies of nanomedicines for therapeutic cargo delivery.</p>

<p>This dataset contains denoised sections of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data, generated using a J-invariant autoencoder. It facillitates the reproduction of the results presented in the paper "Self-Supervised Coherence-Based Denoising on Cryoseismological Distributed Acoustic Sensing Data."</p> <p><br>Abstract:<br><br>One major challenge in cryoseismology is that signals of interest are often buried within the high noise level emitted by a multitude of environmental processes. Events of interest potentially stay unnoticed and remain unanalyzed, particularly because conventional sensors cannot monitor an entire glacier. However, with Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), we can observe seismicity over multiple kilometers. DAS systems turn common fiber-optic cables into seismic arrays that measure strain rate data, enabling researchers to acquire seismic data in hard-to-access areas with high spatial and temporal resolution. We deployed a DAS system on Rhonegletscher, Switzerland, using a 9 km long fiberoptic cable that covered the entire glacier, from its accumulation to its ablation zone, recording seismicity for one month. The highly active and dynamic cryospheric environ ment, in combination with poor coupling, resulted in DAS data characterized by a low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) compared to classical point sensors. Our objective is to ef fectively denoise this dataset.<br>We use a self-supervised J -invariant U-net autoencoder capable of separating incoherent environmental noise from temporally and spatially coherent signals of interest (e.g., stick-slip or crevasse signals). The method shows enhanced inter-channel coherence, increased SNR, and significantly improved visibility of the icequakes. Further, we compare different training data types varying in recording position, wavefield component, and waveform diversity. Our approach has the potential to enhance the detection capabilities of events of interest in cryoseismological DAS data, hence to improve the understanding of processes within Alpine glaciers.</p>

Dataset for "Fiber-Seismometer Hybrid Sensing for Seismic Imaging and Monitoring"
<p>The ambient noise dataset was collected on May 8, 2023, from a fiber-seismometer hybrid sensing deployment positioned along the Qiantang River in Hangzhou. The DAS data, Z-component and R-component data of seismometers are all stored in MAT format. Please refer to our study for detailed information on the dataset.</p> <p>Abstract about this study:</p> <p>Extreme climate events and geological disasters have intensified the urgency for advancing seismic imaging and monitoring. Despite developments in seismic instrumentation, particularly with seismometers and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), fine-scale observations remain challenging due to their inherent limitations and deployment configurations. This study introduces a novel hybrid sensing interferometry method that enhances multi-component signal extraction—especially poor horizontal components—through a two-step cross-correlation of DAS and seismometers. A field application near the Qiantang River in Hangzhou illustrates how our proposed framework retrieves high-quality multi-component empirical Green’s functions and advances ultra-short duration ambient noise seismic imaging techniques, including surface wave dispersion measurements and horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio assessments. Our approach also facilitates monitoring of near-surface seismic velocity changes, dv/v, with an unprecedented 10-minute resolution, shedding light on shallow dynamic hydraulic responses. This innovative hybrid sensing framework offers new perspectives and methodologies for transforming future research in seismological observation, imaging, and monitoring. </p>
Data from: Strain identification and quorum sensing inhibition characterization of marine-derived Rhizobium sp. NAO1
A novel strategy for combating pathogens is through the ongoing development and use of anti-quorum sensing (QS) treatments such as therapeutic bacteria or their anti-QS substances. Relatively little is known about the bacteria that inhabit the open ocean and of their potential anti-pathogenic attributes; thus, in an initiative to identify these types of therapeutic bacteria, planktonic microbes from the North Atlantic Ocean were collected, isolated, cultured and screened for anti-QS activity. Screening analysis identified one such strain, Rhizobium sp. NAO1. Extracts of Rhizobium sp. NAO1 were identified via ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) analysis. They were shown to contain N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-based QS analogues (in particular, the N-butyryl homoserine lactone (C4-AHL) analogue) and could disrupt biofilm formation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. QS inhibition was confirmed using confocal scanning laser microscopy and growth curves, and it was shown to occur in a dose-dependent manner without affecting bacterial growth. Secondary metabolites of Rhizobium sp. NAO1 inhibited PAO1 pathogenicity by downregulating AHL-mediated virulence factors such as elastase activity and siderophore production. Furthermore, as a result of biofilm structure damage, the secondary metabolite products of Rhizobium sp. NAO1 significantly increased the sensitivity of PAO1 to aminoglycoside antibiotics. Our results demonstrated that Rhizobium sp. strain NAO1 has the ability to disrupt P. aeruginosa PAO1 biofilm architecture, in addition to attenuating P. aeruginosa PAO1 virulence factor production and pathogenicity. Therefore, the newly identified ocean-derived Rhizobium sp. NAO1 has the potential to serve as a QS inhibitor and may be a new microbial resource for drug development.
Data from: Modelling the area of occupancy of habitat types with remote sensing
1. A current challenge of biodiversity and conservation is the estimation of the spatial extent of habitat types across broad territories. In the absence of fine-resolution maps, predictive modelling helps in assessing the spatial distribution of vegetation cover. However, such approaches are still uncommon in regional planning and management. Here, we present a framework for mapping the area of occupancy (AOO) of habitat types that allows highly suitable estimates at different scales. 2. We model the potential AOO with abiotic variables related to topography and climate, resulting in broad AOO estimates that are subsequently downscaled to the local AOO with remote sensing. The combination of individual local AOO estimates allows the defining of the realized AOO, comprising locations with a high likelihood of occurrence and low uncertainty for each habitat. We applied this framework to mapping 24 protected habitat types of Natura 2000 sites in northern Spain. 3. Local and realized AOO were highly accurate, with a 70% overall accuracy for the realized AOO. Remote sensing data, and especially LiDAR, were the most important predictors in habitat types related to forests and shrubs, followed by rock outcrops and pastures. Environmental variables were also relevant for specific habitats subject to abiotic constraints. 4. The combination of ecological modelling with remote sensing offers multiple advantages over traditional field surveys and image interpretation, allowing the harmonization of habitat maps across large regions and through time. This is particularly useful for implementing conservation actions under Natura 2000 principles or assessing IUCN criteria for ecosystems.
Data from: When sensing is gambling: an experimental system reveals how plasticity can generate tunable bet-hedging strategies
Genotypes can persist in unpredictable environments by 'hedging their bets' and producing diverse phenotypes. Theoretical studies have shown that the phenotypic variability needed for a bet-hedging strategy can be generated by factors either inside or outside an organism. However, sensing the environment and bet hedging are frequently treated as distinct evolutionary strategies. Furthermore, nearly all empirical studies of the molecular underpinnings of bet-hedging strategies to date have focused on internal sources of variability. We took a synthetic approach and constructed an experimental system where a phenotypic trade-off is mediated by actively sensing a cue present in the environment. We show that active sensing can generate a diversified bet-hedging strategy. Mutations affecting the norm of reaction to the cue alter the diversification strategy, indicating that bet hedging by active sensing is evolvable. Our results indicate that a broader class of biological systems should be considered as potential examples of bet-hedging strategies, and that research into the structure of environmental variability is needed to distinguish bet-hedging strategies from adaptive plasticity.

Use of intrapartum evidence-based practices in childbirth after participating in the Senses of Birth intervention among Brazilian women
<p>Brazil has a cesarean rate of 56% and low use of Intrapartum Evidence-based Practices (IEBP) of 3.4%, reflecting a medically centered and highly interventionist maternal health care model. The Senses of Birth (SoB) is a health education intervention created to promote normal birth, use of EBP, and reduce unnecessary c-sections. This study aimed to understand the use of intrapartum EBP by Brazilian women who participated in the SoB intervention.<b> </b>555 women answered the questionnaire between 2015 and 2016. Bivariate analysis and ANOVA test were used to identify if social-demographic factors, childbirth information, and perceived knowledge were associated with the use of EBP. A qualitative analysis was performed to explore women's experiences. Research participants used the following EBP: birth plan (55.2%), companionship during childbirth (81.6%), midwife care (54.2%), freedom of mobility during labor (57.7%), choice of position during delivery (57.2%), and non-pharmacological pain relief methods (74.2%). Doula support was low (26.9%). Being a black woman was associated with not using a birth plan or having doula support. Women who gave birth in private hospitals were more likely not to use the EBP. Barriers to the use of EBP identified by women were an absence of individualized care, non-respect for their choices or provision of EBP by health care providers, inadequate structure and ambiance in hospitals to use EBP, and rigid protocols not centered on women's needs. The SoB intervention was identified as a potential facilitator. Women who used EBP described a sense of control over their bodies and self-efficacy to advocate for their chosen practices. Women saw the strategies to overcome barriers as a path to become their childbirth protagonist. Health education is essential to increase the use of EBP; however, it should be implemented combined with changes in the maternal care system, promoting woman-centered and evidence-based models.</p>
