European bird declines: do we need to rethink approaches to the management of abundant generalist predators?

<ol> <li>Bird species are declining across Europe. Current European policy, i.e. the Birds and Habitats Directives, focus on habitat management as a way of halting the declines. This paper explores the role of predation in causing bird population declines and asks if we need to reconsider our approach to the management of generalist predators. </li> <li>We analysed bird population trends and distribution changes across Europe, Britain and Ireland, reflecting an increasing gradient of generalist predator abundance (principally red fox <i>Vulpes vulpes </i>and species of the family <i>Corvidae</i>). We tested if ground-nesting bird species, considered more vulnerable to predation,were in greater decline compared to other nesting strategies. We also compared Annex I designated species to non-designated species as a proxy for habitat management.</li> <li>We found that across Europe, 74% of ground-nesting bird species were in decline, compared to 41% of other species. This was especially evident in Britain, where the pattern was 66% compared to 31%, and in Ireland, 71% compared to 20%. Ground-nesting species were significantly more likely to be declining than other species.</li> <li>These patterns are consistent with the idea that population declines are at least partially related to the increased abundance of generalist predators. In Britain, ground-nesting species were less likely to be in decline if covered by Annex I designation. However, in Europe and Ireland, Annex I status did not mitigate the effect of nesting strategy. </li> <li> <i>Policy implications</i><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>. Current legislation is clearly insufficient to prevent widespread declines in ground-nesting birds, and this is the case across Europe, in Britain and Ireland. Ignoring the role of generalist predators in modern landscapes may lead to further declines and losses. We urgently need large-scale experiments to establish causality in the impact of generalist predators on ground-nesting birds in different landscapes. If we value our ground-nesting bird species, consideration needs to be given to the control of widespread generalist predators, at least until landscapes are restored.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span> </li> </ol> <div> <div> <div class="msocomtxt"> <p class="MsoCommentText"> </p> </div> </div> </div>

Data from: Head-to-head drug comparisons in multiple sclerosis: urgent action needed

Disease-modifying drugs are changing the natural history of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, currently available clinical trial data are insufficient to develop accurate personalised treatment algorithms to assign the best possible treatment to each person with MS according to disease features, treatment history and comorbidities. Such accurate algorithms would require the presence of numerous head-to-head trials of long duration, which is virtually impossible, given the economic costs, required time and difficulties with attrition. Thus, efforts are being made to compare relative treatment efficacy through observational designs, using large multi-centre prospective cohorts or 'big MS data', and network meta-analyses. Although such studies can yield useful information, they are liable to biases and their results should be confirmed in other study populations, including smaller, single-centre cohorts, where some of these biases can be minimised. In this View paper we analyse the potential benefits and biases of all these strategies alternative to head-to-head trials in MS. Finally, we propose the combination of all these types of studies to obtain reliable head-to-head drug comparisons in the absence of randomised designs.

The identification of data gaps is based on a complete review of data collected from available data repositories from different finished and ongoing EU projects and from the NECID-PEROSH exposure database.</p>

Influence of videolaryngoscopy using McGrath Mac™ on the need for a helper to perform intubation during general anaesthesia: A multicentre randomised video - no-video trial

<p><b>Objective:</b> We hypothesized was that use of a videolaryngoscope modifies the practice of tracheal intubation.</p> <p><b>Design:</b> Randomized single-blinded study.</p> <p><b>Setting:</b> Three institutions: one academic, one non-profit and one profit.</p> <p><b>Participants</b><b>:</b> Inclusion criteria were patients aged 18 years minimum, requiring orotracheal intubation, without a predicted difficult intubation (Arne score &lt;11). Non-inclusion criteria was patients requiring a rapid-sequence intubation. 300 patients were included, 271 randomised, 256 analysed: 123 in the No-Video group and 133 in the Video group.</p> <p><b>Intervention</b>: Tracheal intubation uses a McGrath Mac™ videolaryngoscope. Patients were randomised into two groups: a Video group (screen activated) and a No-Video group (screen hidden).</p> <p><b>Primary and secondary outcome measures</b>: The main outcome was the need for help for the anaesthesiologist or the nurse anaesthetist in performing tracheal intubation, the sequence being video recorded. Secondary outcomes included the ease of intubation (intubation difficulty scale, Cormack and Lehane<b> </b>grade, percentage of glottic opening<b> </b>scale score, use of alternative techniques, duration, oxygen desaturation, especially). Other outcomes included the cooperation between members of the anaesthesiology team, the proportion of patients suffering from postoperative hoarseness or sore throat, and other adverse events.</p> <p><b>Results:</b>. Requirement for assistance was not decreased in the Video group: 36.1% <span>[95% CI</span> 27.9 to 44.9] versus 45.5% <span>[95% </span>36.5 to 54.7] in the No-Video group (p=0.124). Intubation difficulty scale was lower in the Video group (p=0.009); glottis visualization (Cormack and Lehane score and glottic opening score) was better in the Video group (p&lt;0.001). Duration of intubation was similar between groups. Oxygen desaturation or hypotension requiring treatment during the intubation period and postoperative complications (hoarseness or sore throat) were observed similarly in both groups. No other adverse event occurred.</p> <p><b>Conclusion:</b> In patients without risk of difficulty in airway management, videolaryngoscopy did not decrease the requirement for assistance to perform intubation.</p> <p><b>Trial registration:</b> <span><a href="http://clinicaltrials.gov/">Clinicaltrials.gov</a></span> identifier: NCT02926144<b> </b></p>

Need for speed: Short lifespan selects for increased learning ability - Data

<p>The first dataset provides the R code for the simualiton.</p> <p>The other datasets give trait values of "learning speed" ("L") for each Individual in each generation (1-200) for different lifespans (season length).
