Daily summarized seasonal measurements of discharge, water temperature, and specific conductivity from Santa Fe Stream at B2, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2000)

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor the glacial meltwater streams in that region. This package contains data pertaining to continuous monitored water quality and quantity parameters measured with automatic recording devices on streams in this region. Specifically, this metadata record describes the daily hydrological summaries for the McMurdo Dry Valleys' Santa Fe Stream at the B2 streamgage, located in the Bonney Basin of Taylor Valley. Measurements commenced during the 1993-94 austral summer and continued through the end of the 1999-20 austral summer. The B2 streamgage was removed in December 2000 after it was found completely underwater due to Lake Bonney water level rise. Efforts were made to continue some discrete flow measurements to estimate flow in Santa Fe Stream based on the flow record at the higher elevation streamgage located in nearby Lawson Creek. Thus, Santa Fe Stream transitioned from being continuously monitored to one for which discrete measurements of flow may be made during site visits to Lawson Creek.

Spectral algal concentrations measured with a bbe Moldaenke FluoroProbe in discrete water column samples from lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2004–2023, ongoing)

An important component of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project is monitoring the spatial and temporal patterns and processes that regulate primary production in perennial ice-covered lakes. Phytoplankton are the dominant primary producers in the photic zones of these lakes and play a central role in carbon cycling. This data package quantifies spectral algal concentrations measured with a bbe Moldaenke FluoroProbe at discrete depths throughout the water column of multiple lakes across the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, providing long-term observations that support investigations into primary production dynamics and ecosystem responses to environmental change.

PIE LTER locations of vegetation transects in Rowley salt marsh sites used for measuring long term changes.

A description of transects used for long term studies of marsh vegetation in Rowley, MA. Four sites ((12 transects) were originally set up to study the impact of salt marsh haying. Two of these sites (labeled McH and EPH) were regularly hayed until 2002. The other two (PUH and CC) were reference sites. Two additional sites labeled RM (8 transects) were originally set up to track invasion by Phragmites australis.

PIE LTER eddy flux measurements during 2015 from second high marsh site (Spartina patens/short Spartina alterniflora) Tall Tower off Nelson Island Creek, Rowley, Massachusetts

We deployed an eddy covariance system to measure ecosystem-atmosphere exchange of CO2 above a high marsh system (Spartina patens, short Spartina alterniflora) located on the Parker River Wildlife Refuge in marshes of Plum Island Sound, Rowley MA. The system is located near a higher elevation rock outcropping protected area which allows the tower set up to remain during the Winter as it is protected from ice flows. The data represents CO2 exchange for all 12 months of 2015.

PIE LTER year 2016, 15 minute measurements of specific conductance, water temperature in a small headwater stream draining a highly suburban catchment (72% residential), Saw Mill Brook, Burlington, MA.

Year 2016, continuous measurements, every 15 minutes were made of conductivity, water temperature in a small headwater stream, Saw Mill Brook, Burlington, MA, draining a highly suburban catchment (72% residential) in the Ipswich River watershed. Due to sedimentation within the datalogger housing, there are periods when the datalogger lost hydrological connection with the stream (i.e., during low flow). As such, data has been flagged to remove these erroneous readings.
