Development of public dynamic spatio-temporal monitoring and analysis tool of supply chain vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability
<p>Supply chains play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and societal well-being, facilitating the efficient movement of goods from producers to consumers. However, the increasing frequency of disruptions caused by geopolitical events, pandemics, natural disasters, and shifts in commerce poses significant challenges to supply chain resilience. This draft update report discusses the development of a dynamic spatio-temporal monitoring and analysis tool to assess supply chain vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability. Leveraging news data, macroeconomic metrics, inbound cargo data (for sectors in California), and operational conditions of California's highways, the tool employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) and empirical regression analyses to identify emerging trends and extract valuable information about disruptions to inform decision-making. Key features of the tool include sentiment analysis of news articles, topic classification, visualization of geographic locations, and tracking of macroeconomic indicators. By integrating diverse and dynamic data sources (e.g., news articles) and using empirical and analytical techniques, the tool offers a comprehensive framework to enhance our understanding of supply chain vulnerabilities and resilience, ultimately contributing to more effective strategies for decision-making in supply chain management. The dynamic nature of this tool enables continuous monitoring and adaptation to evolving conditions, thereby enhancing the analysis of resilience and sustainability in global supply chains.</p>

Structural Vulnerability of Coastal Bridges Under Extreme Hurricane Conditions
<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 18STTSA04. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>"This work presents the results of a numerical study evaluating the response of coastal bridges due to hurricane-induced waves. The analyses were conducted using the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) approach, available on the commercial finite element software Abaqus, which allows modeling the interaction between water and the bridge. The work concentrated on (1) establishing an approach for modeling the desired wave characteristics (i.e., wave height, and frequency) within the CEL simulation, (2) conducting simulations using actual bridge dimensions of historically damaged bridges, (3) analyzing a range of foundation flexibilities to determine its effect on the uplift and shear forces acting on the superstructure, and (4) comparing results simulations to AASHTO equations that estimate wave forces acting on coastal bridges. The numerical study revolved around two major highway bridges damaged along the U.S Gulf Coast during hurricane Katrina in 2005, (a) the U.S 90 highway bridge over Biloxi Bay and (b) the US. 90 St. Louis-Bay Bridge. The water level elevation was defined at the bottom of the superstructure as post-Katrina investigations revealed that this was a common characteristic for damaged bridges. The analysis revealed that (a) bridge models with flexible foundations provide better force design estimates than models with rigid supports, (b) the force demands are presumably amplified when the natural frequency of the bridge coincides with that of the traveling waves, and (c) CEL force estimates show large peak magnitudes during wave impacts that exceed AASHTO estimates. Further research is required to determine if these peaks are numerical artifacts or a concern for connection design."</p>

Data from: Encountering a bait is necessary but insufficient to explain individual variability in vulnerability to angling in two freshwater benthivorous fish in the wild
Fish personality traits, such as swimming activity, or personality related emergent behavioural properties, such as space use, should affect encounter rates between fish and fishing gear. Increased encounters should in turn drive vulnerability to capture by passively operated fishing gears. However, empirical evidence documenting a relationship between activity-based behaviours and vulnerability to capture in the wild is limited. Using whole-lake acoustic telemetry, we first documented significant repeatabilities over several months of a suite of encounter rate-associated behaviours (swimming distance, activity space size, time on baited feeding sites, switching frequency among baited feeding sites, distance to the lake bottom) in two recreationally important benthivorous cyprinid species, the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and tench (Tinca tinca). We then experimentally targeted both species using standard angling gear on baited feeding sites. Individual fish regularly visited the angling sites, documenting that the fishes encountered the angling baits. Carp were readily hooked within the first few days, after which catchability dropped to low levels characteristic of tench from the onset of the angling experiment. When attempting to explain individual variation in vulnerability, we failed to document significant relationships among a suite of repeatable encounter-based behaviours and vulnerability to angling for both species. There was also no evidence for size selection or for energetically less conditioned carp to be more vulnerable than their counterparts. The data cumulatively suggest that fine-scale behaviours after encountering a bait (e.g., frequency of bait intake, or degree of spitting baited hooks following ingestion) are ultimately decisive for determining vulnerability to angling in both species. We therefore conclude that encountering a stationary bait in angling for benthivorous cyprinids is a necessary, but insufficient condition for determining the likelihood of capture of an individual fish. Hence, fishing-induced selection on encounter-based behaviours in recreational angling for benthivorous fish in the wild appears unlikely.
Data from: Global change on the Roof of the World: vulnerability of Himalayan otter species to land-use and climate alterations
<p>Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment (CCVA) prescribes the quantification of species vulnerability based on three components: sensitivity, adaptive capacity and exposure. Such assessments should be performed through combined approaches that integrate trait-based elements (e.g., measures of species sensitivity such as niche width) with correlative tools quantifying exposure (magnitude of changes in climate within species habitat). Furthermore, as land-use alterations may increase climate impacts on biodiversity, CCVAs should focus on both climate and land-use change effects. Unfortunately, most of such assessments have so far focused exclusively on exposure to climate change. </p> <p>We evaluated the vulnerability of three otter species occurring in the Himalayan region, i.e. <i>Aonyx cinereus, Lutra lutra </i>and<i> Lutrogale perspicillata</i>, to 2050 climate and land-use through the recently-proposed Climate Niche Factor Analysis (CNFA) framework combined with Species Distribution Models.</p> <p>Future climate and land-use change will reduce (6 – 15%) and shift (10 – 18%) the geographic range of the three species in the Himalaya, with land-use alterations exerting far more severe effects than climate change. Among vulnerability components, sensitivity played a greater role than exposure in determining the vulnerability of the otters. Specifically, the most specialist species, <i>L. perspicillata</i> showed the highest vulnerability in comparison with the most generalist, <i>L. lutra</i>.</p> <p>Our results underline how coupling climate and land-use change components in CCVAs can generate diverging predictions of species vulnerability compared to approaches relying on climate change only. Moreover, intrinsic components, such as species sensitivity, proved significantly more important in determining vulnerability than extrinsic metrics such as habitat exposure.</p> <p>The dataset contains XY coordinates of Himalayan otter species used in the study. Since Himalayan otters are listed as threatened or vulnerable in several of the regions covered by the study, original coordinates were rounded to 1 degree. Specific data sources are provided in the coupled table.</p>
Breeding and feeding habitat selection by an island endemic bird may increase its vulnerability to climate change
<p>Characterising patterns of habitat use is an important first step for effective conservation planning. Species restricted to low-lying islands are at greatest risk from climate change-related sea level rise, and requirements for breeding and foraging habitat may determine their risk from tidal inundation. The endangered Micronesian Scrubfowl (<i>Megapodius laperouse senex</i>) is a model species for understanding these impacts. This species faces the cumulative challenges of tourist visitation, invasive species, and rising sea levels, yet little is understood about its habitat use in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon Conservation Area (RISL) of Palau. We studied the habitat requirements of this mound-nesting scrubfowl as a representative of a group of birds considered highly vulnerable to climate change. Analysis of 15 habitat variables at 24 incubation mounds and 26 randomly chosen sites indicated that scrubfowl selected incubation sites that were close to shore, contained large trees, and exhibited greater canopy heights than the surrounding forest. Birds preferentially built mounds at the base of large ironwood trees (<i>Casuarina</i> <i>equisetifolia</i>) but selected sites with significantly more breadfruit trees (<i>Artocarpus mariannensis</i>) than random. Scrubfowl foraged in a non-preferential manner, making use of all littoral strand forest habitat. Direct anthropogenic habitat loss is not a major threat to scrubfowl in the RISL but their breeding habitat is highly vulnerable to climate change-driven sea level rise.</p>
