<h2>GENERAL INFORMATION</h2> <div>In our publication &ldquo;<em><strong><a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jss.2024.112243">The Power of Words in Agile vs. Waterfall Development: Written Communication in Hybrid Software Teams</a>,&rdquo;</strong></em> in the Journal of Systems and Software, we present an exploratory case study conducted in a large software organization, AFAS Software. Our study investigates the influence of the development paradigm and the formality of communication channels on written communication within hybrid development teams. Our main research question is: <em>&ldquo;<strong>How do the employed development paradigm and the formality of the communication channel impact the written communication content within hybrid software development teams?&rdquo;</strong> </em>To address the main research question, we operationalize communication content through a coding scheme comprising codes derived from the Project Management Life Cycle (PMLC), the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), and speech acts types, which leads to the following sub-research questions:</div> <ul> <li><em>How do the employed development paradigm and the formality of the communication channel impact </em><em>the content of written communication pertaining to the Project Management Life Cycle phases? </em><em>(RQ1A &amp; RQ1B)</em></li> <li><em>How do the employed development paradigm and the formality of the communication channel impact </em><em>the content of written communication pertaining to the Software Development Life Cycle phases? </em><em>(RQ2A &amp; RQ2B)</em></li> <li><em>How do the employed development paradigm and the formality of the communication channel impact </em><em>the use of speech acts types in written communication? Agri-Environmental Communication Interaction Strategic Link to Food Security Solution

<p>Developing countries face challenges of food production (food insecurity) and malnutrition on daily basis and this mainly affects women and children who are culprits of hunger and death. Kenya faces the worst scenario over food deficits and malnutrition. Meeting sustainable food requirements as it is in developed countries becomes an uphill task. Kenya imports more food grains such as maize, rice, sugar and wheat among others. Nearly 40% of our food stores contain imported foods. What could be the reason for this shortage of food? Information captured by local farmers indicates the scientific language used in training and instructing farmers is foreign and scientific hence difficult to conceptualize and interpret to a local environmental language that is simpleto understand and implement by farmers. Farmers therefore end up not doing the right things. This essential agri-environmental communication technique between farmers and instructional language complexity contributes significantly to poor agricultural output. The farmers' claim has been thinly covered in research studies regardingthe food production system. This is the reason for carrying out this research. This paper seeks to address the claim that agri-environmental communication interaction can be key to enhancing food production and nutrition as well as improving human health. The objective was to find out the causes of low food production dueto lack of agri-environmental communication interaction; To assess the effect of food insecurity and malnutrition on human health due to agri-environmental communication interactions and to make recommendations towards enhancing food production and nutrition in improving human health in Kenya through agri-environmental communication interaction. The research study and data was collected from secondary sources, media observations and focus group discussions from the forty-seven counties in Kenya. The findings revealed that, food production is very low due to poor communication in scientific agricultural terminologies interpretation inlocal language for effective use by farmers. The recommendation is that, government and stakeholders should take action and improve on effective agri- environmental communication interaction in order to solve food insecurity and malnutrition. The scientific language used in instructions product labels should include local languages.</p>

Data from: Identifying patterns of non-communicable diseases in developed eastern coastal China: a longitudinal study of electronic health records from 12 public hospitals

Objective: Few studies have examined the spectrum and trends of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in inpatients in eastern coastal China, which is transforming from an industrial economy to a service-oriented economy and is the most economically developed region in the country. This study aimed to dynamically elucidate the spectrum and characteristics of severe NCDs in eastern coastal China by analysing patients' longitudinal electronic health records (EHRs). Setting: To monitor the spectrum of NCDs dynamically, we extracted the EHR data from 12 general tertiary hospitals in eastern coastal China from 2003 to 2014. The rankings of and trends in the proportions of different NCDs presented by inpatients in different gender and age groups were calculated and analysed. Participants: We obtained a total sample of 1,907,484 inpatients with NCDs from 2003 to 2014, 50.05% of whom were male and 81.53% were aged 50 years or older. Results: There was an increase in the number of total NCD inpatients in eastern coastal China from 2003 to 2014. However, the proportion of chronic respiratory diseases and cancer inpatients decreased over the 12-year period. Compared with men, women displayed a significant increase in the proportion of mental and behavioural disorders (P&lt;0.001) over time. Additionally, digestive diseases and sensory organ diseases significantly decreased among men, but not women. The older group accounted for a larger and growing proportion of the NCD inpatients, and the most common conditions in this group were cerebral infarctions, coronary heart disease and hypertension. In addition, the proportion of 21- to 50-year-old inpatients with diabetes, blood diseases or endocrine diseases skyrocketed from 2003 to 2014 (P&lt;0.001). Conclusions: The burden of inpatients' NCDs increased rapidly, particularly among women and younger people. The NCD spectrum observed in eastern coastal China is a good source of evidence for developing prevention guides for regions experiencing transition.

Data from: Sex-specific responses to territorial intrusions in a communication network: evidence from radio-tagged great tits

Signals play a key role in the ecology and evolution of animal populations, influencing processes such as sexual selection and conflict resolution. In many species, sexually selected signals have a dual function: attracting mates and repelling rivals. Yet, to what extent males and females under natural conditions differentially respond to such signals remains poorly understood, due to a lack of field studies that simultaneously track both sexes. Using a novel spatial tracking system, we tested whether or not the spatial behavior of male and female great tits (Parus major) changes in relation to the response of a territorial male neighbor to an intruder. We tracked the spatial behavior of male and female great tits (N = 44), 1 hr before and 1 hr after simulating territory intrusions, employing automatized Encounternet radio-tracking technology. We recorded the spatial and vocal response of the challenged males and quantified attraction and repulsion of neighboring males and females to the intrusion site. We additionally quantified the direct proximity network of the challenged male. The strength of a male's vocal response to an intruder induced sex-dependent movements in the neighborhood, via female attraction and male repulsion. Stronger vocal responders were older and in better body condition. The proximity networks of the male vocal responders, including the number of sex-dependent connections and average time spent with connections, did not change directly following the intrusion. The effects on neighbor movements suggest that the strength of a male's vocal response can provide relevant social information to both the males and the females in the neighborhood, resulting in both sexes adjusting their spatial behavior in contrasting ways, while the social proximity network remained stable. Moreover, our study underlines the importance of the "silent" eavesdroppers within communication networks for studying the dual functioning and evolution of sexually selected signals.

The origins of acoustic communication in vertebrates

<p>Acoustic communication is crucial to humans and many other tetrapods, including birds, frogs, crocodilians, and mammals. However, large-scale patterns in its evolution are largely unstudied. Here, we address several fundamental questions about the origins of acoustic communication in terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods), using phylogenetic methods. We show that origins of acoustic communication are significantly associated with nocturnal activity. We find that acoustic communication does not increase diversification rates, a surprising result given the many speciation-focused studies of frog calls and bird songs. We also demonstrate that the presence of acoustic communication is strongly conserved over time. Finally, we find that acoustic communication evolved independently in most major tetrapod groups, often with remarkably ancient origins (~100–200 million years ago). Overall, we show that the role of ecology in shaping signal evolution applies to surprisingly deep timescales, whereas the role of signal evolution in diversification may not.</p>

Data from the article: Narrative Risk Communication as a Lingua Franca for Environmental Hazard Preparation

<p>Incorporating narrative elements into risk communication may encourage preparation for environmental hazards in ways that scientific language alone does not. We integrate narrative theory, narrative persuasion, and risk theories into a Narrative Risk Communication Framework and then assess the effectiveness of character selection as a narrative mechanism in scientific risk communication as compared to conventional science messaging alone. We utilize a survey experiment with residents along the flood-prone Yellowstone River in Montana and analyze the resulting data with a parallel and serial mediation statistical model. We find that positive affective response mediates the influence of narratives featuring hero character language. Positive affective response appears to overcome the risk perception paradox both by circumventing rational analysis of risk and by shaping risk perception. Overall, the results suggest that inspirational hero language is superior to language of fear or victimization in encouraging preparation – an important lesson for practitioners working to help citizens prepare for environmental disasters.</p>

Supporting data for: Risk factors common to leading eye health conditions and major non-communicable diseases: A rapid review and commentary

<p><strong><span>Background</span></strong><span>: </span><span>To gain an understanding of the intersection of risk factors between the most prevalent eye health conditions that are associated with vision impairment and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).</span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>:</span><span> A</span><span> series of rapid reviews of reviews reporting on non-modifiable risk factors, age and sex, and modifiable risk factors, including social determinants, were conducted for five common eye health conditions that are the leading causes of vision impairment globally (refractive error including uncorrected refractive error, cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy) and five prevalent NCDs (cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, dementia, and depressive disorders). </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>: </span><span>Eye health conditions and NCDs share many risk factors. Increased age was found to be the most common shared risk factor, associated with increased risks of AMD, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, refractive error, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia. Other shared risk factors included smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption (mixed results), and physical activity was protective, though limited evidence was found for eye conditions. Social determinants are well documented as risk factors for NCDs.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong>:</span><span> There is substantial overlap in common established risk factors for the most frequent vision-impairing eye conditions and leading NCDs. Increasing efforts should be made to integrate preventative and risk reduction interventions to improve health, with the greatest shared benefits for initiatives that aim to reduce smoking, improve diet, and promote physical activity.</span></p>
