<p>This is the data repository to reproduce the analysis of the manuscript "From net-zero to zero-fossil in transforming the EU energy system", which is currently under review for publication in a scientific journal. </p> <p>The source code for the REMIND version used in this study is available at <a href="https://github.com/fschreyer/remind/tree/FossilFree_master">https://github.com/fschreyer/remind/tree/FossilFree_master.</a> The scenario config file that was used to start the specific model runs of the analysis including all scenario-specific model settings can be found in the repository under <a href="https://github.com/fschreyer/remind/blob/FossilFree_master/config/scenario_config_fossilfree.csv">./config/scenario_config_fossilfree.csv</a>. Data Set for Predicting the Performance of ATL Model Transformations Based on Generated Models
<p>Predicting the execution time of model transformations can help to understand how a transformation reacts to a given input model without creating and transforming the respective model.</p> <p>In our previous data set (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8385957), we have documented our experiments in which we predict the performance of ATL transformations using predictive models obtained from training linear regression, random forest and support vector regression. As input for the prediction, our approach uses a characterization of the input model. In these experiments, we only used data from real models.</p> <p>However, a common problem is that transformation developers do not have enough models available to use such a prediction approach. Therefore, in a new variant of our experiments, we investigated whether the three considered machine learning approaches can predict the performance of transformations if we use data from generated models for training. We also investigated whether it is possible to achieve good predictions with smaller training data. The dataset provided here offers the corresponding raw data, scripts, and results.</p> <p>A detailed documentation is available in documentaion.pdf.</p>

Novel trophic subsidies from recreational angling transform the trophic ecology of freshwater fishes
<p>Angling is a globally popular leisure activity. There are over 31 million anglers in Europe, many of which target species of the Cyprinidae family in lowland freshwater ecosystems using methods generally involving bait (e.g. groundbaits, seeds and pellets), with large bait inputs possible in periods of high angling activity. While these bait inputs act as novel trophic subsidies ('angling subsidy'), substantial knowledge gaps remain on their influence on freshwater food-webs, including on fish trophic niche size and position. The effects of angling subsidies on the trophic ecology of cyprinid fish populations and their macroinvertebrate prey resources were investigated in field studies comparing waters of high angling activity ('subsidised fisheries') versus low angling activity ('non-subsidised fisheries'), and complemented by a pond experiment using two cyprinid species in subsidy absence/presence. Methods were based on stable isotope analysis, with angling subsidies being δ13C enriched and, generally, δ15N depleted compared to macroinvertebrate prey resources. In the subsidised fisheries, while there were minimal influences of the baits on macroinvertebrate stable isotope values, the effects of the subsidies on all fish species were to substantially δ13C enrich and δ15N deplete their isotopic niches. However, patterns of inter-specific niche divergence remained similar between the species in subsidy presence. In the pond experiment, there was strong isotopic association between the two fish species and macroinvertebrate putative prey in subsidy absence. In treatments that then exposed both species to angling subsidies, their stable isotope values shifted to enriched δ13C. Synthesis and application: Where angling activity is high, angling baits can provide strong trophic subsidies to freshwater fish, but with minimal effects on other trophic levels. Their regular input into freshwaters can provide some substantial benefits for fish (e.g. increased growth rates) and fisheries (e.g. elevated carrying capacity, higher catch rates), but can also increase nutrient enrichment and potentially raise ethical and fish welfare concerns. Thus, in allowing the use of these baits, especially in relatively high quantities, managers must balance the benefits they can deliver to fish and fisheries versus the adverse effects their use can have on freshwater organisms and ecosystem functioning.</p>

Data set - Laboratory experiments of extreme wave transformation on a coral reefs with a steep slope
<p><strong>Data set - Laboratory experiments of extreme wave transformation on a coral reef with a steep slope</strong></p> <p>This data set includes measurements of wave transformation and wave runup on a physical model (scale 1:60) of a coral reef with a very steep slope (1/2.26). The fore reef morphology is based on the reef at Teahupo'o, Tahiti, French Polynesia according to Harris et al. (2019). The bathymetry is extended with a reef lagoon and planar slope (1/9.64) inland. Wave conditions from the study area are employed to estimate extreme wave conditions.</p> <p>Laboratory experiments were carried out at the Coastal Processes and Engineering Laboratory, IINGEN UNAM, in Sisal, Yucatan. The data set is aimed to assess the performance of numerical models to predict hihgly nonlinear wave transformation over steep slopes.</p> <p>The dataset consists of:</p> <p><strong>-Waves: </strong>free surface elevation time series were aquired at 50 Hz using resistive wave gauges. Moreover, a 2-m long sensor was installed parallel to the beach in order to measure wave runup. Irregular, regular, and solitary waves were tested. The information is recorded in .txt files. The files are in the folders Irregular_waves.zip, Regular waves.zip and Solitary waves.zip, corresponding to irregular, regular, and solitary waves, respectively.</p> <p><strong>-Horizontal velocity:</strong> An electromagnetic current meter was installed near the breakpoint to measure the horizontal current velocity at 16 Hz. The information corresponding to each test is recorded in .txt files. The files are in the folder Electromagnetic current meter.zip.</p> <p><strong>-Bathymetry:</strong> A .txt file is included with the x-z coordinates of the reef profile used (Profile_Teahupoo.txt).</p> <p><strong>-Simulated cases:</strong> An Excel file with the laboratory tests and the sensor locations for each test is included (Cases.xlsx).</p> <p><strong>-ERA-5 data: </strong>A .txt file is included with the ERA-5 wave reanalysis data used (-18° S, -149.5° W) (ERA5_data.txt).</p>
