<p>In the Arctic tundra, predators face recurrent periods of food scarcity and often turn to ungulate carcasses as an alternative food source. As important and localized resource patches, carrion promotes co-occurrence of different individuals, and its use by predators is likely to be affected by interspecific competition. We studied how interspecific competition and resource availability impact winter use of carrion by Arctic and red foxes in low Arctic Fennoscandia. We predicted that presence of red foxes limits Arctic foxes' use of carrion, and that competition depends on the availability of other resources. We monitored Arctic and red fox presence at supplied carrion using camera traps. From 2006 to 2021, between 16 and 20 cameras were active for two months in late winter (288 camera-winters). Using a multi-species dynamic occupancy model at a week-to-week scale, we evaluated use of carrion by foxes while accounting for the presence of competitors, rodent availability and supplemental feeding provided to Arctic foxes. Competition affected carrion use by increasing both species' probability to leave occupied carcasses sites between consecutive weeks. This increase was similar for the two species, suggesting symmetrical avoidance. Increased rodent abundance was associated with a higher probability of colonizing carrion sites for both species. For Arctic foxes, however, this increase was only observed at carcasses unoccupied by red foxes, showing greater avoidance when alternative preys are available. Supplementary feeding increased Arctic foxes' carrion use, regardless of red fox presence. Contrary to expectations, we did not find strong signs of asymmetric competition for carrion in winter, which suggests that interactions for resources at a short time scale are not necessarily aligned with interactions at the scale of the population. In addition, we found that competition for carcasses depends on the availability of other resources, suggesting that interactions between predators depend on the ecological context.</p>

UK climate hazard and climate change adaptation resources for heritage
<p><span>This dataset (.xlsx) is a compendium of climate change hazard data and adaptation resources for cultural heritage. It was created by JBA Consulting for Historic England and is accompanied by a <a href="https://historicengland.org.uk/research/results/reports/16-2024">research report</a> which provides the background, methodology, and results of the project. One aim of the project was to identify and compile climate hazard resources (data and tools) that could assist those managing the UK historic environment, with specific attention paid to data availability, spatial resolution, and format. </span></p> <p><span> </span><span>The project identified 73 datasets and 38 tools. The datasets were linked to relevant climate hazards from a standardised hazard vocabulary (<a href="../records/10868587">Thomas, 2024</a>). The attached pdf file provides further details on how to use the dataset. Trophic resource partitioning drives fine-scale coexistence in cryptic bat species
Understanding the processes that enable species coexistence has important implications for assessing how ecological systems will respond to global change. Morphology and functional similarity increase the potential for competition, and therefore, co-occurring morphologically similar but genetically unique species are a good model system for testing coexistence mechanisms. We used DNA metabarcoding and High Throughput Sequencing to characterise for the first time the trophic ecology of two recently-described cryptic bat species with parapatric ranges, Myotis escalerai and Myotis crypticus. We collected faecal samples from allopatric and sympatric regions and from syntopic and allotopic locations within the sympatric region to describe the diets both taxonomically and functionally and compare prey consumption with prey availability. The two bat species had highly similar diets characterised by high arthropod diversity, particularly Lepidoptera, Diptera and Araneae, and a high proportion of prey that is not volant at night, which points to extensive use of gleaning. Diet overlap at the prey-item level was lower in syntopic populations, supporting trophic shift under fine-scale co-occurrence. Furthermore, the diet of M. escalerai had a marginally lower proportion of not nocturnally volant prey in syntopic populations, suggesting that the shift in diet may be driven by a change in foraging mode. Our findings suggest that fine-scale coexistence mechanisms can have implications for maintaining broad-scale diversity patterns. This study highlights the importance of including both allopatric and sympatric populations and choosing meaningful spatial scales for detecting ecological patterns. We conclude that a combination of high taxonomic resolution with a functional approach helps identify patterns of niche shift.
Moose selection for resource stoichiometry
<ol> <li>Herbivores consider the variation of forage qualities (nutritional content and digestibility) as well as quantities (biomass) when foraging. Such selection patterns may change based on the scale of foraging, particularly in the case of ungulates that forage at many scales.</li> <li>To test selection for quality and quantity in free-ranging herbivores across scales, however, we must first develop landscape-wide quantitative estimates of both forage quantity and quality. Stoichiometric distribution models (StDMs) bring opportunity to address this because they predict the elemental measures and stoichiometry of resources at landscape extents.</li> <li>Here, we use StDMs to predict elemental measures of understory white birch quality (% nitrogen) and quantity (g carbon/m<sup>2</sup>) across two boreal landscapes. We analyzed GPS collared moose (n = 14) selection for forage quantity and quality at the landscape, home range, and patch extents using both individual and pooled resource selection analyses. We predicted that as the scale of resource selection decreased from the landscape to the patch, selection for white birch quantity would decrease and selection for quality would increase.</li> <li>Counter to our prediction, pooled-models showed selection for our estimates of quantity and quality to be neutral with low explanatory power and no scalar trends. At the individual-level, however, we found evidence for quality and quantity trade-offs, most notably at the home range scale where resource selection models explain the largest amount of variation in selection. Furthermore, individuals did not follow the same trade-off tactic, with some preferring forage quantity over quality and vice-versa.</li> <li>Such individual trade-offs show that moose may be flexible in attaining a limiting nutrient. Our findings suggest that herbivores may respond to forage elemental compositions and quantities, giving tools like StDMs merit towards animal ecology applications. The integration of StDMs and animal movement data represents a promising avenue for progress in the field of zoogeochemistry.</li> </ol>
Preferential allocation of benefits and resource competition among recipients allows coexistence of symbionts within hosts
<p>Functionally variable symbionts commonly co-occur including within the roots of individual plants, in spite of arguments from simple models of the stability of mutualism that predict competitive exclusion among symbionts. We explore this paradox by evaluating the dynamics generated by symbiont competition for plant resources, and the plant's preferential allocation to the most beneficial symbiont, using a system of differential equations representing the densities of mutualistic and non-mutualistic symbionts and the level of preferentially allocated and non-preferentially allocated resources for which the symbionts compete. We find that host preferential allocation and costs of mutualism generate resource specialization that makes the coexistence of beneficial and non-beneficial symbionts possible. Furthermore, coexistence becomes likely due to negative physiological feedbacks in host preferential allocation. We find that biologically realistic models of plant physiology and symbiont competition predict that the coexistence of beneficial and non-beneficial symbionts should be common in root symbioses, and that the density and relative abundance of mutualists should increase in proportion to the needs of the host.</p>
ICRP Recommendations May Be Fit-For-Purpose, But Without Adequate Human Resources, We Just Won't Get There
<p>In many countries in the world radiation protection faces an acute shortage of human resources. In particular, the medical-physics and radiation-protection professions face an acute shortage of entrants owing to the irregular number of physics/engineering graduates and low popularity of two year masters programmes. Under such conditions ICRP recommendations may of themselves be very much fit-for-purpose, however their implementation in practice is fraught with difficulties and sometimes of a dubious level. A formula needs to be found to: (a) ensure that the potential stock of entrants to the professions would be independent of erratic student numbers in physics/engineering (b) address the paradox of having to reduce the masters programme to one year at a time when the knowledge-skills-competences required for modern medical-physics / radiation-protection practice are expanding rapidly owing to the increasing complexity of medical device technology and clinical protocols. It was considered that the best way forward would be to opt for an undergraduate inter-faculty programme that combined physics and medical physics/radiation protection. The resulting four year programme consists of 5 parallel strands namely physics/mathematics/statistics, medical-physics/radiation-protection, basic-medical-sciences, research and hospital placements. The physics/mathematics/statistics component is sufficiently strong to ensure a strong scientific foundation whilst the medical-physics/radiation-protection component is sufficiently comprehensive to permit the reduction of the Masters in Medical Physics from two years to one. We are pleased to report that the innovative curricular experiment has been a great success. The combination of pure and applied physics, the inter-faculty nature of the programme (where students share lectures with both physics and healthcare professions students) together with the element of clinical practice have been found to be the most attractive features of the programme. The programme has provided a welcome boost for both the medical-physics/radiation-protection professions and indeed even physics itself.</p>
The Three R's Of Reasonable: Relationships, Rationale, & Resources
<p>Central to applying the principle of optimisation in the system of radiological protection is the evaluation of what level of radiation exposure should be considered “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA) in a given circumstance. Determining what is “reasonable” is an abstract although somewhat intuitive concept with many potential answers depending on both the situation and those involved, whether individuals or organisations. There are common themes across exposure scenarios and within existing radiation protection guidance related to the determination of reasonableness. However, despite the fairly consistent and agreeable nature, there remains a gap in how to apply these themes in real situations. For example, without measurable goalposts (or a transparent process for setting such goalposts) for determining what constitutes ALARA, we can find ourselves misinterpreting the optimisation process as keeping exposures “as low as possible.” We thus propose herein, by consolidating and building on existing ideas, an easily understandable and actionable “reasonableness” framework. This simple, yet broadly applicable tool is intended to help radiation protection practitioners systematically reflect on all of the factors that make up “reasonable” before making a decision, although the process and decision itself will necessarily retain the complexity of the prevailing circumstance. The proposed “Rs” of Reasonable represent Relationships (stakeholders, transparency, and empathy), Rationale (contextual, scientific, and ethical justifications), and Resources (technology/technique, finances, time).</p>
