Data from: The systematic position of the stonefly †culonga Sinitshenkova, 2011 (Plecoptera: Leuctrida) reassessed using Reflectance Transforming Imaging and cladistic analysis

The phylogenetic position of the insect species †culonga Sinitshenkova, 2011, recovered from the Khasurty locality (Transbaikalia, Russia; Early Cretaceous), is re-investigated. This fossil needle stonefly has been considered an Exeleuctrida nec Mioleuctrida &amp; Eleuctrida based on the organization of the hind wing venation opposite the arculus. We reconsidered this interpretation based on a direct observation, complemented by a Reflectance Transforming Imaging file. Our investigation indicates that the species displays the defining character state of Eleuctrida while it lacks the defining character state of Mioleuctrida. Due to inconsistencies in the character state combination displayed by the species, we carried out a cladistics analysis. The species †culonga is recovered as an Eleuctrida nec Mioleuctrida, and therefore represents a suitable calibration point for a node more recent than previously assumed, and incidentally demonstrates that Mioleuctrida belongs to Eleuctrida.

Data from: Selection signatures underlying dramatic male inflorescence transformation during modern hybrid maize breeding

Inflorescence capacity plays a crucial role in reproductive fitness in plants, and in production of hybrid crops. Maize is a monoecious species bearing separate male and female flowers (tassel and ear, respectively). The switch from open-pollinated populations of maize to hybrid-based breeding schemes in the early 20th century was accompanied by a dramatic reduction in tassel size, and the trend has continued with modern breeding over the recent decades. The goal of this study was to identify selection signatures in genes that may underlie this dramatic transformation. Using a population of 942 diverse inbred maize accessions and a nested association mapping population comprised of three 200-line biparental populations, we measured 15 tassel morphological characteristics by manual and image-based methods. Genome-wide association studies identified 242 single nucleotide polymorphisms significantly associated with measured traits. We compared 41 unselected lines from the Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic (BSSS) population to 21 highly selected lines developed by modern commercial breeding programs and show that tassel size and weight were reduced significantly. We assayed genetic differences between the two groups using selection statistics XP-EHH, XP-CLR, and FST. All three selection statistics show evidence of selection at genomic regions associated with tassel morphology relative to genome-wide null distributions. These results support the tremendous effect, both phenotypic and genotypic, that selection has had on maize male inflorescence morphology.

Data from: Rapid transformation in the braincase of sauropod dinosaurs: integrated evolution of the braincase and neck in early sauropods?

Sauropod dinosaurs were quadrupedal herbivores with a highly specialized body plan that attained the largest masses of any terrestrial vertebrates. Recent discoveries have shown that key traits associated with sauropod gigantism appeared stepwise during the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic in evolutionary 'cascades' of associated changes, in which a 'head and neck' cascade has been suggested as an important module. Here, we investigate the evolutionary transformation of the sauropodomorph braincase, using discrete anatomical characters, prompted by the reanalysis of a Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) sauropodiform braincase from England. Our analysis shows that sauropod braincases are highly distinct, and occupy a different region of morphospace than their evolutionary relatives. This resulted from anatomical transformations including a set of changes in the surface attachments of craniocervical musculature, which may indicate integrated evolution between neck elongation and transformation in braincase anatomy. Neck elongation in Late Triassic and Early or Middle Jurassic taxa is potentially associated with episodes of skull reduction, indicating that the 'head and neck' cascade was activated more than once in the evolutionary history of Sauropodomorpha. The re-activation of this cascade in the Jurassic may have impacted on the differential survival of sauropodomorph lineages through the Early and Middle Jurassic.
