Does a history of population co-occurrence predict plant performance, community productivity, or invasion resistance?
<p>A history of species co-occurrence in plant communities is hypothesized to lead to greater niche differentiation, more efficient resource partitioning, and more productive, resistant communities as a result of evolution in response to biotic interactions. A similar question can be asked of co-occurring populations: do individual species or community responses differ when communities are founded with plants sharing a history of population co-occurrence (sympatric) or originating from different locations (allopatric)? Using shrub, grass, and forb species from six locations in the western Great Basin, USA, we compared establishment, productivity, reproduction, phenology, and resistance to invaders for experimental communities with either sympatric or allopatric population associations. Each community type was planted with six taxa in outdoor mesocosms, measured over three growing seasons, and invaded with the annual grass <em>Bromus tectorum</em> in the final season. For most populations, the allopatric or sympatric status of neighbors was not important. However, in some cases, it was beneficial for some species from some locations to be planted with allopatric neighbors, while others benefited from sympatric neighbors, and some of these responses had large effects. For instance, the <em>Elymus</em> population that benefited the most from allopatry grew 50% larger with allopatric neighbors than in single origin mesocosms. This response affected invasion resistance, as <em>B. tectorum</em> biomass was strongly affected by productivity and phenology of <em>Elymus</em> spp., as well as <em>Poa secunda</em>. Our results demonstrate that while community composition can affect plant performance in semi-arid plant communities, assembling communities from sympatric populations is not sufficient to ensure high productivity and invasion resistance. Instead, we observed an idiosyncratic interaction between sampling effects and evolutionary history, with the potential for seed source of individual populations to have community-level effects.</p>

Ontogeny of immunity and potential implications for co-infection
<p>Immunity changes through ontogeny and can mediate facilitative and inhibitory interactions among co-infecting parasite species. In amphibians, most immune memory is not carried through metamorphosis, leading to variation in the complexity of immune responses across life stages. To test if the ontogeny of host immunity might drive interactions among co-infecting parasites, we simultaneously exposed Cuban treefrogs (<em>Osteopilus septentrionalis</em>) to a fungus (<em>Bactrachochytrium dendrobaditis</em>) and a nematode (<em>Aplectana hamatospicula</em>) at tadpole, metamorphic, and post-metamorphic life stages. We measured metrics of host immunity, host health, and parasite abundance. We predicted facilitative interactions between co-infecting parasites as the different immune responses hosts mount to combat these infectious are energetically challenging to mount simultaneously. We found ontogenetic differences in IgY levels and cellular immunity but no evidence that metamorphic frogs were more immunosuppressed than tadpoles. There was also little evidence that these parasites facilitated one another and no evidence that <em>A. hamatospicula </em>infection altered host immunity or health. However, Bd, which is known to be immunosuppressive, decreased immunity in metamorphic frogs. This made metamorphic frogs both less resistant and less tolerant of Bd infection than the other life stages. These findings indicate that changes in immunity altered host responses to parasite exposures throughout ontogeny.</p>

Data from: Widespread amphibian Perkinsea infections associated with Ranidae hosts, cooler months, and Ranavirus co-infection
<p>Amphibians suffer from large-scale population declines globally, and emerging infectious diseases contribute heavily to these declines. Amphibian Perkinsea (Pr) is a worldwide anuran pathogen associated with mass mortality events, yet little is known about its epidemiological patterns, especially in comparison to the body of literature on amphibian chytridiomycosis and ranavirosis. </p> <p>Here, we establish Pr infection patterns in natural anuran populations and identify important covariates including climate, host attributes, and co-infection with Ranavirus (Rv). </p> <p>We used quantitative (q)PCR to determine the presence and intensity of Pr and Rv across 1234 individuals sampled throughout central Florida in 2017-2019. We then implemented random forest ensemble learning models to predict infection with both pathogens based on physiological and environmental characteristics. </p> <p>Perkinsea infected 32% of all sampled anurans, and Pr prevalence was significantly elevated in Ranidae frogs, cooler months, metamorphosed individuals, and frogs co-infected with Rv, while Pr intensity was significantly higher in ranid frogs and individuals collected dead. Ranavirus prevalence was 17% overall and was significantly higher in Ranidae frogs, metamorphosed individuals, locations with higher average temperatures, and individuals co-infected with Pr. Perkinsea prevalence was significantly higher than Rv prevalence across months, regions, life stages, and species. Among locations, Pr prevalence was negatively associated with crayfish prevalence and positively associated with relative abundance of microhylids, but Rv prevalence did not associate with any tested co-variates. Co-infections were significantly more common than single infections for both pathogens, and we propose that Pr infections may propel Rv infections because seasonal Rv infection peaks followed Pr infection peaks and random forest models found Pr intensity was a leading factor explaining Rv infections. </p> <p>Our study elucidates epidemiological patterns of Pr in Florida and suggests that Pr may be under-recognized as a cause of anuran declines, especially in the context of pathogen co-infection.</p>
The Aedes aegypti RNA interference response against Zika virus in the context of co-infection with dengue and chikungunya viruses
<p>This is the corresponding data of the Publication in Plos Neglected tropical diseases.</p> <p>Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne human-pathogenic arbovirus of the <em>Flaviviridae</em> family, genus <em>Flavivirus</em>. Other arboviruses, including dengue (DENV) or chikungunya (CHIKV) virus, can occur in the same regions as ZIKV and are also transmitted by <em>Aedes aegypti</em>. Notably, it has been shown that these viruses can co-infect this mosquito, andco-transmission occurs. Such processes may add to the serious public health issues already linked to those pathogens. Arbovirus infections in mosquitoes are controlled through an immune response called RNA interference (RNAi). It is however unknown whether immune responses changs when a mosquito is exposed to a co-infection of ZIKV with either DENV or CHIKV. In this study, we provide evidence that ZIKV co-infections with CHIKV or DENV are similarly well controlled by RNAi as single infections. These findings give new insights into the dynamics of arboviral co-infections in mosquito vectors that increase our understanding of co-infection scenarios during arbovirus outbreaks.</p>
Entangled Ecologies. Interactive Documentary between Living Archive, Responsible Witnessing and Relational Co-Creation
<p>The videoessay is also accessible: <a href="https://trametrami.avinus.org/publikationen/3-2023">https://trametrami.avinus.org/publikationen/3-2023</a></p> <p>Recent re-conceptualizations of participation as well as theories of digital transformation culture have shifted the notion of the archive seeing not so much as a static, institutional body but rather as a dynamic, living epistemic environments. Building on these approaches, this presentation discusses emerging phenomena in interactive documentary focusing on ecological emergency – seeing this crisis itself as a complex ecology of issues where images and conceptualization past, present and future meet. Taking paradigmatic projects addressing the issue of climate change – <em>The Shore Line</em> (2017) and <em>Climate Witness Project </em>(2019) – I suggest tentative answers to the question in which way i-docs can contribute to tackle complex change. Are there images from the past which help us to better cope with the present and to envision a more sustainable future? How can one raise awareness of immanent ecological risks when menace is almost invisible, unprecedented and un-imaginable? Is there a way to negotiate multifaceted entanglements through documentaries which are neither paralyzing ecodystopian narratives nor naive ecotopian success-stories? The hypothesis underlying my approach is that one possible solution resides in documentaries which are built on principles of pluri-perspectivity and polyphony to transcend dualisms and to build bridges leading from history to the forthcoming. Discourses from various traditions are brought into dialogue: theories of documentary film meet ecocriticism; network theory encounters reflections on the epistemic dimension of non-fiction; and concepts of co-creation and intervention are related to processes of witnessing, doing documentary and responsible action-taking.</p> <p> </p> <p>more information: <a href="https://did.avinus.org/">https://did.avinus.org/</a> and <a href="https://trametrami.avinus.org/publikationen">https://trametrami.avinus.org/publikationen </a></p>
Transient acetaldehyde production by SO2 producing S. cerevisiae promotes survival of Oenococcus oeni during co-fermentation
<p>Stuck or sluggish malolactic fermentation (MLF) can be problematic in limiting wine conditions, particularly white and sparkling base musts / wines. In these cases, knowledge of yeast-bacteria strain compatibility and the amount of sulfur dioxide (SO<sub>2</sub>) a yeast strain produces are important considerations for successful MLF.</p> <p>Here, the effects of yeast-derived SO<sub>2</sub> production on <em>O. oeni</em> survival was investigated in laboratory- and pilot-scale co-fermentations in Chardonnay. Further to the <em>S</em>. <em>cerevisiae</em> strain affecting <em>O. oeni</em> survival and MLF, we show that SO<sub>2</sub> production by yeast (to approximately 65 mg/L) can be uncoupled from <em>O. oeni </em>survival in early stages of co-fermentation. Bacterial survival with certain SO<sub>2</sub>-producing yeast strains was correlated with early, transient formation of a high concentration of acetaldehyde. Upon co-inoculation, an extremely low concentration range (approximately 1–44 µg/L) of calculated molecular SO<sub>2</sub> is indicated to regulate <em>O</em>. <em>oeni</em> survival. <span>Possible strain-dependent sensitivity of <em>O. oeni</em> to bound SO<sub>2</sub> may also occur, although the extent and nature of such inhibition by the SO<sub>2</sub> adduct itself during co-fermentation remains unclear. </span></p> <p><span>Choice of co-inoculation yeast strain also influenced wine diacetyl concentration, </span>which was only detected in wines co-inoculated with high-SO<sub>2</sub>-producing <em>S. cerevisiae </em>strains. <span>These wines also had comparatively high citation frequency for a buttery sensory attribute. </span>Both the SO<sub>2</sub> and acetaldehyde production capacity of yeasts are therefore seen as meaningful co-inoculation selection criteria. <span>The range of yeast strains suitable for MLF induction by co-inoculation could be widened to include SO<sub>2</sub>-producing strains which transiently produce an early, high concentration of acetaldehyde. Reliance on total / bound SO<sub>2</sub> concentration may also potentially provide an inaccurate measure of SO<sub>2</sub> toxicity towards <em>O. oeni</em>, particularly for co-inoculation, and the impact of low, equilibrium concentrations of molecular SO<sub>2</sub> should also be considered. </span></p>

Evolutionary history and climate co-determine the geographical variation in pollination modes of angiosperms in China
<p><span><strong>Aim:</strong> </span><span>Pollination is an essential stage of angiosperm reproduction and the mode of pollination plays a major role in driving evolutionary and ecological responses of plants to environmental changes. However, the effects of climate, evolutionary history and floral traits (i.e. plant sexual systems) on pollination mode variation remain unclear. Here, we explored the biogeographic patterns in pollination mode frequency, and tested the hypothesis that insect pollination prevails in warm humid regions with old floras due to high pollinator dependence, whereas wind pollination is more frequent in arid regions with younger floras and is more strongly associated with dioecy.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Location</strong>: </span><span>China</span></p> <p><span><strong>Time</strong> <strong>period</strong>: </span><span>Since the Last Glacial Maximum</span></p> <p><span><strong>Major taxa studied</strong>:</span><span> Angiosperms</span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>:</span><span> Using data on pollination modes and geographic ranges of 29,719 angiosperm species in China, we mapped the biogeographic </span><span>pattern of pollination mode frequency</span><span>. Phylogenetic logistic regressions and </span><span>generalized linear mixed models </span><span>were employed to evaluate the relative importance of climate, evolutionary history (represented by phylogenetic conservatism and grid-level mean genus age) and sexual systems on variations in pollination modes across species and space.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>: </span><span>E</span><span>volutionary history was the strongest correlate of pollination mode variation across species and space. The proportion of insect-pollinated species was higher in warm humid regions with old floras, but lower in arid regions with young floras. </span><span>Evolutionary history and temperature dominated variations in pollination mode frequency in warm humid areas, while precipitation dominated in arid areas.</span><span> Climate mainly influenced geographic patterns in pollination mode frequency</span><span> indirectly via its effects on species richness and plant sexual systems.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Main</strong> <strong>conclusions</strong>: </span><span>Our results showed that </span><span>geographic pattern in angiosperm pollination mode frequency is </span><span>dominated by evolutionary history followed by climate</span><span>, which extended previous findings of climate-driven mechanisms. Corona Haikus - Poetics of compassion. Visual poetry and co-creation in virtual opening spaces as self-care and community-care
<p>The COVID-19 lockdowns and the maxim of social distancing have not only been accompanied by an upheaval of all so far assumed certainties and our complex socio-cultural infrastructures – they have also brought along deep permutation in our personal, intimate lives. As closeness and connectivity are essential in times of cataclysm, and as the preservation and negotiation of the effects of crises and its consequences is one element in deal with stress and anxieties, the impulse to document and reflect one's experiences, to reset one's focus and to regain agency through (co-)creative practices and mutual care have gained momentum. This might be one reason why during the lockdown many virtual communities emerged, e.g. social media initiatives with a documentary impetus, as well as collaborative web-projects. The motives for engaging in such networks are various – and often, one and the same project serves different needs at the same time for different user-participants. Apart from the impulse to document unprecedented times as a coping strategy to face personal uncertainties, and apart from the impetus to share one's experiences with others and thus to create a feeling of connectivity, these projects are also means for mediated self-care: they are spaces to self-reflexively cope with a slow-downed and often also isolated lifestyle and to make social distancing more bearable. This contribution examines the potentials of co-creative documentary poetry/poetic documentary in times of crises, taking the participatory project Corona Haikus as an example – a project, which launched during the first lockdown in March 2020 as an artistic experiment repurposing the facebook platform and which later metamorphosed into a curated website. I will investigate which community needs have existed during the crisis, and how the collaborative project Corona Haikus answered them. The focus of the presentation lies on co-creation as a form of self- and community-care, on the visual haiku as a poetic and therapeutic form and meditative practice of creation, as well as the use of networked media, to create 'open spaces' (sensu Zimmermann & De Michiel 2018), to foster communicative connectivity and to inspire creativity – thus making social media networks social in the proper sense of the word. Conceptualizations of co-creation, participation, mediated mindfulness and the healing potential of creativity – especially visual poetry – will be supplemented by reflections on community building, agency in co-creative projects and media ethics. Co-design of a citizen science study: unlocking the potential of eDNA for volunteer freshwater monitoring
<ol> <li>Citizen science is increasingly being promoted as a means of gathering more data to help inform the management of ecosystems. Involving the participants in the design of data collection activities is a form of co-design often proposed by those calling for a translational ecology.</li> <li>In addition, novel monitoring approaches have the potential to improve the quality of data collected by citizen scientists. We explored the potential of environmental DNA (eDNA) for vertebrate (mainly fish) species monitoring through a co-designed catchment monitoring strategy. </li> <li>Having been introduced to the potential of eDNA, citizen scientists designed and executed an eDNA-based survey of a small chalk stream catchment to explore questions of concern.</li> <li>The eDNA monitoring approach provided data about fish and other vertebrate diversity in the catchment which would have otherwise required sampling approaches difficult for citizen scientists. These data give a preliminary answer to some of the citizen scientists' priority questions and are comparable to fish data collected through traditional electrofishing surveys.</li> <li>Recommendations are offered for co-design and the use of novel research techniques by citizen scientists.</li> </ol>
