Intraspecific variation and energy channel coupling within a Chilean kelp forest
<p>The widespread importance of variable types of primary production, or energy channels, to consumer communities has become increasingly apparent. However, the mechanisms underlying this 'multichannel' feeding remain poorly understood, especially for aquatic ecosystems that pose unique logistical constraints given the diversity of potential energy channels. Here, we use bulk tissue isotopic analysis along with carbon isotope (δ<sup>13</sup>C) analysis of individual amino acids to characterize the relative contribution of pelagic and benthic energy sources to a kelp forest consumer community in northern Chile. We measured bulk tissue δ<sup>13</sup>C and δ<sup>15</sup>N for >120 samples; of these we analyzed δ<sup>13</sup>Cvalues of six essential amino acids (EAA) from nine primary producer groups (n=41) and eleven representative nearshore consumer taxa (n=56). Using EAA δ<sup>13</sup>C data, we employed linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to assess how distinct EAA δ<sup>13</sup>C values were between local pelagic (phytoplankton/particulate organic matter), and benthic (kelps, red and green algae) endmembers. With this model, we were able to correctly classify nearly 90% of producer samples to their original groupings, a significant improvement on traditional bulk isotopic analysis. With this EAA isotopic library, we then generated probability distributions for the most important sources of production for each individual consumer and species using a bootstrap-resampling LDA approach. We found evidence for multichannel feeding within the community at the species level. Invertebrates tended to focus on <i>either</i> pelagic or benthic energy, deriving 13–67% of their EAA from pelagic sources. In contrast, mobile (fish) taxa at higher trophic levels used more equal proportions of each channel, ranging from 19–47% pelagically-derived energy. Within a taxon, multichannel feeding was a result of specialization among individuals in energy channel usage, with 37 of 56 individual consumers estimated to derive >80% of their EAA from a single channel. Our study reveals how a cutting-edge isotopic technique can characterize the dynamics of energy flow in coastal food webs, a topic which has been historically difficult to address. More broadly, our work provides a mechanism as to how multichannel feeding may occur in nearshore communities, and we suggest this pattern be investigated in additional ecosystems.</p>

Causal coupling between European and UK markets triggered by announcements of monetary policy decisions
<p>We investigate high-frequency reactions in the Eurozone stock market and the UK stock market during the time period surrounding the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BoE)'s interest rate decisions assessing how these two markets react and co-move influencing each other.</p> <p>The effects are quantified by measuring linear and non-linear transfer entropy combined with a Bivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition (BEMD) from a dataset of 1-minute prices for the Euro Stoxx 50 and the FTSE 100 stock indices.</p> <p>We uncover that central banks' interest rate decisions induce an upsurge in intraday volatility that is more pronounced on ECB announcement days and there is a significant information flow between the markets with prevalent direction going from the market where the announcement is made towards the other.</p>

Weak coupling among barrier loci and waves of neutral and adaptive introgression across an expanding hybrid zone
<p>Hybridization can serve as an evolutionary stimulus, but we have little understanding of introgression at early stages of hybrid zone formation. We analyze reproductive isolation and introgression between a range-limited and a widespread species. Reproductive barriers are estimated based on differences in flowering time, ecogeographic distributions, and seed set from crosses. We find an asymmetrical mating barrier due to cytonuclear incompatibility that is consistent with observed clusters of coincident and concordant tension zone clines (barrier loci) for mtDNA haplotypes and nuclear SNPs. These groups of concordant clines are spread across the hybrid zone, resulting in weak coupling among barrier loci and extensive introgression. Neutral clines had nearly equal introgression into both species' ranges, while putative cases of adaptive introgression had exceptionally wide clines with centers shifted towards one species. Analyses of cline shape indicate that secondary contact was initiated within the last 800 generations with the per-generation dispersal between 200 and 400 meters, and provide some of the first estimates of the strength of selection required to account for observed levels of adaptive introgression. The weak species boundary between these species appears to be in early stages of dissolution, and ultimately will precipitate genetic swamping of the range-limited species.</p>

Wood Brook catchment: A coupled phenology – surface energy balance model to understand stream – subsurface temperature dynamics
<p>This folder contains data, model input files, model executable and source code required to reproduce results in the paper:"Evaluating a coupled phenology – surface energy balance model to understand stream – subsurface temperature dynamics in a mixed-use farmland catchment" by Han Qiu, Phillip Blaen, Sophie Comer-Warner, David M. Hannah, Stefan Krause and Mantha S. Phanikumar (Water Resources Research).</p> <p>The catchment (referred to herein as Wood Brook, Mill Brook, Mill Haft, BIFOR) is a mixed-use farmland catchment in central England. The "Data" folder contains information needed to create model input files. The "Figures" folder contains MS excel files with observed data (streamflows, groundwater heads, stream, streambed and groundwater temperatures etc) and simulation results to recreate the figures in the WRR paper. The other three folders contain model inputs, outputs and source code.</p>
