The relation between deviation from the balanced time perspective and quality of life among older people. The mediating role of death anxiety and the moderating role of awareness of aging

<p><em><span>Objectives</span></em><span>. In the current study, one of the objectives was to check if the deviation from a balanced time perspective (DBTP) is a predictor of the quality of life of the elderly. Another objective investigated whether awareness of aging is a moderator and death anxiety a mediator of the relationship between PTSD and quality of life. <em>Method.</em> 436 elderly people participated in this research (M = 68.27; SD= 6.56; 66.7% female, 33.3% male). They completed 4 instruments to evaluate the variables included in the study: World Health Organization Quality of Life, Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory - Short version, Death Anxiety Scale and Awareness of Age-Related Change 10-Item Short Form (awareness of aging). <em>Results</em>. Statistical analyzes highlighted the fact that DBTP is not a predictor of quality of life, but it can positively predict death anxiety. Also, awareness of aging does not moderate the relationship between DBTP and quality of life. Finally, death anxiety negatively predicts quality of life, but also mediates the relationship between DBTP and quality of life. <em>Discussion</em>. This study brought to the fore some concepts less addressed in the case of the elderly population in Romania, which could lead to the identification of some benefits for improving the quality of life of the elderly. Starting from the conclusions obtained, promotion and intervention plans can be developed to improve mental and physical health services. The inclusion process of the elderly in as many social activities as possible can also be considered.</span></p> <p><strong><span>&nbsp;</span></strong></p>

Data from: Ancient mitochondrial DNA provides high-resolution time scale of the peopling of the Americas

The exact timing, route, and process of the initial peopling of the Americas remains uncertain despite much research. Archaeological evidence indicates the presence of humans as far as southern Chile by 14.6 thousand years ago (ka), shortly after the Pleistocene ice sheets blocking access from eastern Beringia began to retreat. Genetic estimates of the timing and route of entry have been constrained by the lack of suitable calibration points and low genetic diversity of Native Americans. We sequenced 92 whole mitochondrial genomes from pre-Columbian South American skeletons dating from 8.6 to 0.5 ka, allowing a detailed, temporally calibrated reconstruction of the peopling of the Americas in a Bayesian coalescent analysis. The data suggest that a small population entered the Americas via a coastal route around 16.0 ka, following previous isolation in eastern Beringia for ~2.4 to 9 thousand years after separation from eastern Siberian populations. Following a rapid movement throughout the Americas, limited gene flow in South America resulted in a marked phylogeographic structure of populations, which persisted through time. All of the ancient mitochondrial lineages detected in this study were absent from modern data sets, suggesting a high extinction rate. To investigate this further, we applied a novel principal components multiple logistic regression test to Bayesian serial coalescent simulations. The analysis supported a scenario in which European colonization caused a substantial loss of pre-Columbian lineages.

<p>This explanation pertains to the data prepared for Non sola scriptura: <em>Essays on the Qur&rsquo;an and Islam in Honour of William A. Graham</em> (Routledge), Chapter by Sarah Bowen Savant, &ldquo;People versus Books.&rdquo;</p> <p>We are releasing data that was used to create for the chapter, Graphs 1 and 2 and also Tables 1-3.</p> <p><strong>Note:</strong> All the data files (except the text in number 3) are in TSV format (Tab Separated Values) and any text editor or tabular data editor, such as Excel can deal with it.&nbsp;</p> <ol> <li> <p><strong>&ldquo;IsnadFractions_PeopleversusBooks&rdquo;</strong>. This file represents a filtered version of an output from Ryan Muther&rsquo;s <em>isnād</em> classifier algorithm.&nbsp;Muther ran the algorithm in July 2020, based on the Version 2020.1.2 release of the corpus, available at: <a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3891466">http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3891466</a>. The data file includes:</p> <ul> <li> <p>author: the name of the author.</p> </li> <li> <p>died: death date of author. NB: Especially the early dates cannot be relied on.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> </li> <li> <p>title: the title of the author&rsquo;s book, from the OpenITI Corpus.</p> </li> <li> <p>length: length of the book, measured in word-tokens.</p> </li> <li> <p>isnad_fraction: the percentage of the book&rsquo;s word-tokens that are made up of <em>isnād</em>s.</p> </li> </ul> </li> <li> <p><strong>&ldquo;GALTags_PeopleversusBooks&rdquo;.</strong> Books in the OpenITI were mapped by Walid A. Joep Lameer, 2 vols and 3 supplements, Leiden: Brill, 2016-2018.&nbsp;</p> <p>The file includes the following columns:</p> <ul> <li> <p>id: book id, from the OpenITI Corpus.</p> </li> <li> <p>gal_tags: the GAL tags, also used in the OpenITI Corpus&nbsp;</p> </li> </ul> </li> <li> <p><strong>&ldquo;0571IbnCasakir.TarikhDimashq.JK000916-ara1.mARkdown&rdquo;. </strong>The Ibn ʿAsākir text file, from the Version 2020.1.2 release of the OpenITI Corpus.</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>&ldquo;NamedEntities_PeopleversusBooks&rdquo;.</strong> This is a very first effort at working on named entities in Ibn ʿAsākir&rsquo;s Taʾrīkh Madīnat Dimashq and represents only a tiny fraction of the surface forms of names. Most of the names pertain to persons who transmitted from Ibn Saʿd. There may be some duplicate surface forms (which does not affect the method). We use this list to replace the surface forms with transliterated values. The column description is as below:</p> <ul> <li> <p>name: the normalized name.</p> </li> <li> <p>ar_name: the Arabic name, which are the surface forms.</p> </li> <li>status: true (T)/false (F) values to include/exclude the cases in the&nbsp;replacement process. We have used&nbsp;true values.</li> </ul> </li> <li> <p><strong>&ldquo;SplittingTerms_PeopleversusBooks&rdquo;.</strong> We started with a list of transmissive terms that R. Kevin Jaques originated and then added more terms, which include the various normalized forms of the same term. We used this list to split <em>isnād</em>s into names.</p> </li> <li> <p><strong>&ldquo;IbnSadIsnads_PeopleversusBooks&rdquo;.</strong> This file includes the pieces of texts that the algorithm tags as <em>isnād</em>s in the text. We extracted the tagged pieces and made a list of <em>isnād</em>s. Almost all of the <em>isnād</em>s start with a transmissive term. We use this file to extract the names and clean some rows to generate a data table that we can use for clustering. Below are the brief description of the column:</p> <ul> <li> <p>text_ID: this contains the book id from the OpenITI Corpus. This column can be ignored as we are using it for one text in this project. However, it is required in the collection of <em>isnād</em>s from multiple texts.</p> </li> <li> <p>id: a unique identifier assigned to each <em>isnād</em>. The <em>isnād</em> classifier algorithm assigns this id and can be used to identify each <em>isnād</em> in the text when required.</p> </li> <li> <p>isnad_text: the <em>isnād</em> that we extract from the text.&nbsp;</p> </li> <li> <p>length: length of the extracted <em>isnād</em> in tokens</p> </li> </ul> </li> <li><strong>&ldquo;IsnadNames_PeopleversusBooks&rdquo;.</strong> This file is the <em>isnād</em>s list (number 5 on this list) splitted by the transmissive terms (number 4 on this list) in order to extract the names in the <em>isnād</em>s. &zwnj;The column are the same as below: <ul> <li>text_ID: this contains the book id from the OpenITI corpus. This column can be ignored as we are using it for one text in this project. However, it is required in the collection of <em>isnād</em>s from multiple texts.</li> <li>isnad_text: this column is the <em>isnād</em> that&nbsp; we extract from the text.</li> <li>ibnSad_cnt: number of times that the name Ibn Saʿd is mentioned in the corresponding&nbsp;<em>isnād</em>.</li> <li> <p>name_at_position_X: the rest of the columns in this table include the pieces of the <em>isnād</em> that we get after splitting the <em>isnād</em>s with a list of terms. Each column contains a name or any string that appears between two transmissive terms. Some cells are empty and it is because we probably miss some transmissive terms.</p> </li> </ul> </li> <li> <p><strong>&ldquo;IbnSadClusters_PeopleversusBooks&rdquo;.</strong> This file includes clusters of <em>isnād</em>s of length six (i.e. <em>isnād</em>s that&nbsp; include six names). We have used the affinity propagation (AP) clustering algorithm based on the Levenstein similarity score of the names. Below is the column description:</p> <ul> <li> <p>frequency: the frequency of the <em>isnād</em> in the data</p> </li> <li> <p>cluster_id: the id of the cluster to which the <em>isnād</em> belongs</p> </li> <li>nameX: columns C to H include the names in <em>isnād</em> at position 1 to 6, running back to Muhammad b. <p>These files form part of an archive of research data relating to the diplomatic mission to Persia 1810-15, led by Sir Gore Ouseley as ambassador. The data have been compiled by independent researchers W H (Bill) Martin and Sandra Mason;&nbsp; their contact details are in the README file..&nbsp; The files comprise a number of searchable listings relating to the reports produced by members of the mission and other relevant data.&nbsp; The data formed the basis for a published report on the Ouseley Mission referenced below, which is also part of the archive.&nbsp;</p> <p>This section of the archive contains a database, <em>ouspeople</em>, listing people mentioned in the reports on the Ouseley mission and others of relevance to the analysis.&nbsp; The database file has been saved in two formats:&nbsp; a Microsoft Access database (.accdb) and a comma-delimited text file (.txt).&nbsp; The&nbsp;explanatory README text file contains a table showing the fields included in the database and giving definitions of them and of the codings used in different cases.&nbsp;</p>
