Trans-Frontier Maps of the Survey of India

This is a set of approximately 50 maps of areas outside the boundaries of British India. These maps were produced from about 1895 to 1910, and were frequently updated as new geographic knowledge of these outlying areas became available. These maps were often classified as 'secret' or 'restricted' and in general were not available to the public. The map scales varied depending on the situation.

There is one map name on each line, and each name is a link. Click on any link and the Possible niche compression and individual specialization in Pacific Arctic beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) from the 19th to 20th century

Cetaceans have shown potential to be used as sentinel species for tracking environmental change in marine ecosystems, yet our assessment of change is typically limited to recent decades and lacks ecological baselines. Using historical museum specimens, we compared community niche metrics and degree of individual dietary specialization in groups of Pacific Arctic beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) from the 1800s (n = 5) to 1900s (n = 10) using stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes drilled from teeth. Beluga occupied a broader trophic niche and demonstrated a higher degree of individual specialization in the 1800s than in the 1900s. The cause of this shift is difficult to confirm given long timescales and constraints of specimen-based research but could indicate changes in the prey base or competition. The scale and nature of this detected shift provide perspective for continued research on these climate-vulnerable species.

Supplementary Materials for: Lost Loops: 19th century thermosiphon ventilation and its potential for heat recovery in buildings today

We investigate ventilation heat recovery with buoyancy flow, arranging interior spaces in an open thermal loop with heat exchange through partition walls. We draw inspiration from a Victorian-era thermosiphon scheme after finding it in Montreal’s former Royal Victoria Hospital and tracing the concept back to the original Centre Block of Canada’s Parliament Hill. We corroborate the archival evidence with analog models to visualize how the original hospital’s ventilation system worked. We use saline baths to verify how the siphon functioned and digital Schlieren to confirm how the full flow cycle worked with heat recovery. Then, to generalize these observations, we develop a mathematical model showing how heat recovery with buoyancy ventilation can work in simple room arrangements. We define a criterion for stable, unidirectional flow and a heat recovery efficiency limit of 50%. Finally, we validate the mathematical model experimentally, demonstrating stable, one-way flow close to the heat recovery limit.

Features for the classification of Spanish American 19th century novels by subgenre (part of data-nh)

This dataset contains feature sets that were prepared for the classification of Spanish American 19th century novels by subgenre. There are two main types of features sets: MFW-based features, and topic features. The MFW-based features include basic MFW, word n-grams, and character n-grams with different numbers of MFW and tf, tf-idf, or z-score normalization. The topic features are derived from topic models created with different parameters (number of topics, optimization intervals).

These feature sets were used in a classification analysis as a part of the dissertation "Genre Analysis and Corpus Design: 19th Century Spanish American Novels (1830-1910)" by Ulrike Henny-Krahmer. Data from: Shark tooth weapons from the 19th century reflect shifting baselines in Central Pacific predator assemblies

The reefs surrounding the Gilbert Islands (Republic of Kiribati, Central Pacific), like many throughout the world, have undergone a period of rapid and intensive environmental perturbation over the past 100 years. A byproduct of this perturbation has been a reduction of the number of shark species present in their waters, even though sharks play an important in the economy and culture of the Gilbertese. Here we examine how shark communities changed over time periods that predate the written record in order to understand the magnitude of ecosystem changes in the Central Pacific. Using a novel data source, the shark tooth weapons of the Gilbertese Islanders housed in natural history museums, we show that two species of shark, the Spot-tail (Carcharhinus sorrah) and the Dusky (C. obscurus), were present in the islands during the last half of the 19th century but not reported in any historical literature or contemporary ichthyological surveys of the region. Given the importance of these species to the ecology of the Gilbert Island reefs and to the culture of the Gilbertese people, documenting these shifts in baseline fauna represents an important step toward restoring the vivid splendor of both ecological and cultural diversity.

Frequencies per million words for 5 epidemiologically relevant search terms in a dozen British 19th century newspapers

COVID-19 is the first known coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, the seasonal circulation of the four milder coronaviruses of humans – OC43, NL63, 229E and HKU1 – raises the possibility that these viruses are the descendants of more ancient coronavirus pandemics. This proposal arises by analogy to the observed descent of seasonal influenza subtypes H2N2 (now extinct), H3N2 and H1H1 from the pandemic strains of 1957, 1968 and 2009, respectively. Recent historical revisionist speculation has focussed on the influenza pandemic of 1889-1892, based on molecular phylogenetic reconstructions that show the emergence of human coronavirus OC43 around that time, probably by zoonosis from cattle. If the "Russian influenza", as The Times named it in early 1890, was not influenza but caused by a coronavirus, the origins of the other three milder human coronaviruses may also have left a residue of clinical evidence in the 19th century medical literature and popular press. In this paper, we search digitised 19th century British newspapers for evidence of previously unsuspected coronavirus pandemics. We conclude that there is little or no corpus linguistic signal in the UK national press for large-scale outbreaks of unidentified respiratory disease for the period 1785 to 1890.

19th Century Telegraph Key

Early forms of communication were based mainly on visual indicators. The discovery of electricity made it possible to transmit messages using an electric telegraph. The telegraph was more reliable than visual indicators and provided instantaneous contact.

A telegraph key is used to transmit messages in a telegraph. The one seen here is found in Ingenium's collection of artifacts and is called a Camelback because of the hump-shaped look of the lever. It is made out of brass and was used in a telegraph office in Metcalfe, Ontario, which opened in 1870 and closed in 1912.

Note: The model is meant to be viewed in a virtual environment using computer software.
