Fall 2007 plant monitoring survey -- biomass calculated from shoot height and flowering status of plants in permanent plots at GCE sampling sites 1-10

The biomass of plants surveyed in permanent plots at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites in October 2007 was estimated based on allometric relationships between biomass and shoot height and flowering status derived for each site, zone, and species in October 2002 and October 2007. Biomass was only calculated for dominant species, including Spartina alterniflora, S. cynosuroides, Juncus roemerianus, and Zizaniopsis miliacea. This data set is based on GCE plant monitoring survey data set PLT-GCEM-0801a, and allometric relationships were based on GCE data sets PLT-GCEM-0211b, PLT-GCEM-0711, and PLT-GCEM-2011.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Watershed 3 soil moisture transect, 2007

Soil moisture was measured along a slope transect in Watershed 3 as part of a study examining hydrologic connectivity between hillslopes and the stream. Soil moisture sensors were located nearby shallow groundwater wells (available from https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/210b60a3d2f5ee2bb2635ee2fb33b637) along a topographically defined landform sequence (footslope–backslope– shoulder) in a sub-catchment of Watershed 3. The study was part of Joel Detty's M.S. thesis. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Rates of benthic coral reef community metabolism from 2007 ongoing

Rates of community primary production and respiration can be calculated from the data presented here. For two sites on the north shore of Moorea, these measurements are sampled upstream and downstream: dissolved oxygen, water column velocity (speed and direction), in situ light (PAR) levels, incident solar radiation, temperature, wind speed, and transect length. Estimates are made yearly across approximately 160 m of the backreef community. This material uses data collected by the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research (MCR LTER) site under Grant No. OCE 2224354 (and earlier awards). Additional financial support to the MCR LTER site was provided through a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2024).

2007 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Lakes Assessment dataset plus derived data and additional spatially explicit ancillary environmental data.

Lake water quality is known to be affected by local and regional drivers, including lake physical characteristics, hydrology, landscape position, land cover, land use, geology, and climate. Here, we demonstrate the utility of hypothesis testing within the landscape limnology conceptual framework using a random forest algorithm on large, national-scale, spatially explicit dataset, the United States Environmental Protection Agency 2007 National Lakes Assessment. For 1026 lakes, we tested the relative importance of water quality drivers across spatial scales, the importance of hydrologic connectivity in mediating water quality drivers, and how the importance of both spatial scale and connectivity differ across response variables for five important in-lake water quality metrics (total phosphorus, total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, turbidity, and conductivity).

Geographically paired lake-reservoir dataset derived from the 2007 USA EPA National Lakes Assessment

Climate change poses a significant threat to lake and reservoir ecosystems, though the exact nature of these threats may differ between lakes and reservoirs. To assess differences between lakes and reservoirs that may influence their response to climate change, we compared catchment and waterbody attributes of 132 geographically paired lakes and reservoirs from the 2007 United States Environmental Protection Agencys National Lakes Assessment (NLA) dataset. The data include the NLA IDs of each waterbody and their elevation, catchment area, surface area, perimeter, maximum depth, residence time, Secchi disk depth, surface temperature, and bottom temperature. Residence time data was collected from estimates generated by Brooks, J.R., J.J. Gibson, S.J. Birks, M.H. Weber, K.D. Rodecap, J.L. Stoddard. 2014. These data describe the number, location and activity or behavior of sea otters (Enhydra lutris) individuals observed along the Santa Barbara Coast and local Channel Islands, during SBC LTER field sampling. Observations began in 2007. Records are collected regularly at SBC core sites and opportunistically while research staff are underway or travelling between sites. Locations are included, but some latitudes and longitudes are approximate.

Effects of Fire Seasonality on Chihuahuan Desert Grasslands at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2007-2020)

Desert grassland vegetation is a key resource upon which rangelands in the southwestern US are built, and managing these ecosystems remains a critical challenge today. This experimental fire seasonality research project, in collaboration with the USFWS, USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station, and the Sevilleta LTER, is intended to provide land management agencies with information about vegetation recovery following fire under different seasonal conditions and burning treatments. This experimental research will enable the FWS to more effectively set project objectives for prescribed burning on the Sevilleta NWR to benefit not only wildlife habitat, but to better align the timing and intensity of fire to benefit the reestablishment of the dominant native grama grasses Bouteloua eriopoda and B. gracilis. Since its creation in 1973, management has been devoted to restoring the Sevilleta NWR to the natural conditions that might have been seen around the turn of the century. The Sevilleta NWR is an ideal place for research because climatic conditions, plant species composition and net primary production following wildfire have been well documented by the Sevilleta LTER. Additional experimental research is needed, however, to better inform managers about the timing and use of fire as an ecosystem restoration and management tool. This is an on-going, long-term experiment under the auspices of the Sevilleta LTER program.

Red Knot observations on the Virginia Coast, 2007-2019

Red Knot observations on the Virginia Coast, 2007-2019 Understanding factors that influence a species' distribution and abundance across the annual cycle is required for range-wide conservation. Thousands of imperiled red knots (Calidris cantus rufa) stop on Virginia's barrier islands each year to replenish fat during spring migration. We investigated the variation in red knot presence and flock size, the effects of prey on this variation, and factors influencing prey abundance on Virginia's barrier islands. We counted red knots and collected potential prey samples at randomly selected sites from 2007 - 2018 during a two-week period during early and peak migration. Core samples contained crustaceans (Orders Amphipoda and Calanoida), blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), coquina clams (Donax variabilis), and miscellaneous prey (horseshoe crab eggs (Limulus polyphemus), angel wing clams (Cyrtopleura costata), and other organisms (e.g., insect larvae, snails, worms)). Estimated red knot numbers in Virginia during peak migration were highest in 2012 (11,959) and lowest in 2014 (2,857; 12-year peak migration x̄ = 7,175, SD = 2,869). Red knot and prey numbers varied across sampling periods and substrates (i.e., peat and sand). Red knots generally used sites with more prey. Miscellaneous prey (x̄ = 18.85/core sample, SE = 0.88) influenced red knot presence at a site early in migration, when we only sampled on peat banks. Coquina clams (x̄ = 11/core sample, SE = 0.30) and blue mussels (x̄ = 0.94/core sample, SE = 0.04) affected red knot presence at a site during peak migration, when we sampled both substrates. Few relationships between prey and red knot flock size existed, suggesting that other unmeasured factors determined red knot numbers at occupied sites. Tide and mean daily water temperature affected prey abundance. SM2RAIN-ASCAT (2007-2022): global daily satellite rainfall from ASCAT soil moisture

<p><strong>SM2RAIN-ASCAT is a new global scale rainfall product</strong> obtained from ASCAT satellite soil moisture data through the SM2RAIN algorithm (<em>Brocca et al., 2014; 2019</em>). The SM2RAIN-ASCAT rainfall dataset (in mm/day) is provided over a&nbsp;regular grid at 0.1-degree sampling (3600x1801) on a global scale. The product represents the accumulated rainfall between the 00:00 and the 23:59 UTC of the indicated day. The SM2RAIN method was applied to the ASCAT soil moisture product&nbsp;(<em>Wagner et al., 2013</em>) for the period from January 2007 to December 2022 (16 years), for version 2.1.2n.</p> <p>The rainfall dataset is provided in NetCDF format. A total of 16 NetCDF files, one per year, are provided. The quality flag provided with the dataset&nbsp;has been used to mask out low quality data, as well as the areas characterised by complex topographic, frozen soil, and presence of tropical forests. In addition to the daily accumulated rainfall value, also the rainfall noise (mm/day) is provided for every day.</p> <p><strong>Version 2.1.2 should not be used due to an error in the precipitation data. Water chemistry, bedrock geology, and land cover data for Pennsylvania headwater streams: 2007-2022.

This data package contains all data necessary to run random forest and regression analyses featured in the article: 'Influence of bedrock geology on headwater stream pH' by G. Moyer, K. Frantz, and M. Shank. The data include water chemistry, land cover, and geologic formations for 271 headwater streams in Pennsylvania. Data from two previously published papers are also included: Ponce et al. (1979) and Lynch and Dise (1985), which were used as validation datasets.

Eddy Flux Measurements, Ridge Station, Imnavait Creek, Alaska - 2007

In contribution to the Arctic Observing Network, the researchers have established two observatories of landscape-level carbon, water and energy balances at Imnavait Creek, Alaska and at Pleistocene Park near Cherskii, Russia. These will form part of a network of observatories with Abisko (Sweden), Zackenburg (Greenland) and a location in the Canadian High Arctic which will provide further data points as part of the International Polar Year. This particular part of the project focuses on simultaneous measurements of carbon, water and energy fluxes of the terrestrial landscape at hourly, daily, seasonal and multi-year time scales. These are the major regulatory drivers of the Arctic climate system and form key linkages and feedbacks between the land surface, the atmosphere and the oceans. We will provide a comprehensive description of the state of the regional Arctic system with respect to these variables, its overall regulation and controlling features and its interaction with the global system.In support of these objectives, a 3m eddy covariance station was established on a low ridge adjacent to Imnavait Creek, Alaska. This station has been continuously monitoring carbon dioxide, water vapor, energy fluxes and various micrometeorological variables.

Tussock height and diameter in moist acidic tussock tundra at the site of the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire scar, and nearby unburned tundra measured in 2016

This dataset consists of Eriophorum vaginatum tussock height and width (diameter) measurements, and was used to evaluate differences in physical strucutre of previously burned tundra (2007 Anaktuvuk River fire) and nearby unburned tundra. At each site, all tussocks that intersected four 100 meter transects were measured from soil surface to tussock top in four cardinal directions, and diameter was measured in two directions. These data were used to examine the impact of post-fire changes in plant community composition and structure on habitat suitability and rodent herbivore activity in response to a large, severe, and unprecedented fire in northern Alaska moist acidic tundra.

This dataset consists of tussock density, mortality rates and causes, and an assesment of rodent-herbivore activity levels in previously burned (2007 Anaktuvuk River fire) and unburned tussock tundra. Eriophourm vaginatum tussocks were counted every meter within a 1 square meter quadrat along three transects. Cause of tussock mortality, as well as level of rodent herbivory was assessed for each tussock, and rodent herbivore activity was assessed for each quadrat. The goal of the project was to examine the impact of post-fire changes in plant community composition and structure on habitat suitability and rodent herbivore activity in response to a large, severe, and unprecedented fire in northern Alaska moist acidic tundra.

Leaf area index (LAI) by plant functional group in moist acidic tussock tundra, at the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire scar measured in 2017

This file contains leaf area index (LAI) based on biomass measurements from an aboveground pluck in the southern portion of the Anaktuvuk River fire scar, and a nearby unburned site in late July 2017. Vegetation was sampled randomly at 10-m intervals along two 100 meter transects at both the burned and unburned sites. Vegetation was sampled within a 10X40 cm quadrat to the mineral layer, and plant material was sorted into new and old aboveground leaf and woody biomass by species. All samples were dried and weighed, and subsampled leaf material was scanned to determine specific leaf area (centimeterSquaredPerGram biomass) per species, which was then used to transform leaf biomass (gramPerMeterSquared) into the leaf area index for each site.

Comparison of vole-grazed and ungrazed Eriophorum vaginatum tussock biomass at the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire scar in 2019

This file contains biomass measurements from vole-grazed and ungrazed Eriophorum vaginatum tussocks taken from the 2007 Anaktuvuk River Fire scar in 2019. Rodent-grazed and ungrazed tussocks were harvested to assess the impact voles have on biomass. Eighteen grazed tussocks and seven ungrazed tussocks were harvested and taken back to the lab. Ungrazed tussocks were subsampled to make seperation faster. Eight additional ungrzed tussocks were measured in the field and biomass estimates were made using allometry equations based on diameter. The goals of the project were to examine the impact of post-fire changes in plant community composition and structure on habitat suitability and rodent herbivore activity in response to a large, severe, and unprecedented fire in northern Alaska moist acidic tundra.

Eriophorum vaginatum rhizome nitrogen content from the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire scar measured in 2019.

This file contains Eriophorum vaginatum rhizome biomass from a 2017 biomass pluck of previously burned tundra (2007 Anaktuvuk River Fire) and nearby unburned tundra. Rhizome biomass from the pluck was combined with rhizome percent nitrogen estimates (2.47% at the Anaktuvuk River Fire, and 1.05% at the nearby unburned site) to estimate grams of nitrogen per meter squared, to evaluate differences in winter forage quality for the rodent herbivore, Microtus oeconomus. Percent nitrogen estimates were derived from pooled rhizome samples collected from the two sites in late 2018. The goals of the project were to examine the impact of post-fire changes in plant community composition, nutrient quality and structure on habitat suitability and rodent herbivore activity in response to a large, severe, and unprecedented fire in northern Alaska moist acidic tundra.
