Eddy Flux Measurements, Fen Station, Imnavait Creek, Alaska - 2012

In contribution to the Arctic Observing Network, the researchers have established two observatories of landscape-level carbon, water and energy balances at Imnaviat Creek, Alaska and at Pleistocene Park near Cherskii, Russia. These will form part of a network of observatories with Abisko (Sweden), Zackenburg (Greenland) and a location in the Canadian High Arctic which will provide further data points as part of the International Polar Year. This particular part of the project focuses on simultaneous measurements of carbon, water and energy fluxes of the terrestrial landscape at hourly, daily, seasonal and multi-year time scales. These are the major regulatory drivers of the Arctic climate system and form key linkages and feedbacks between the land surface, the atmosphere and the oceans. We will provide a comprehensive description of the state of the regional Arctic system with respect to these variables, its overall regulation and controlling features and its interaction with the global system. In support of these objectives, a 3m eddy covariance station was established on Imnaviat Creek, Alaska. This station has been continuously monitoring carbon dioxide, water vapor, energy fluxes and various micro-meteorological variables.

Presence/absence of new snow-fall scored from time-lapse photography collected near Toolik Field Station, Alaska, summers 2012-2016

This data set describes the presence/absence of new snowfall approximated daily using time -lapse photography images near Toolik Field Station during summers from 2012 to 2016 under National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Polar Programs ARC 0908444 (to Laura Gough), ARC 0908602 (to Natalie Boelman), and ARC 0909133 (to John Wingfield). Additional cameras funded by other grants were also used for scoring including multiple Toolik EDC timelapse images taken at Toolik, Atigun Ridge, and Imnavait. Additional data were scored from time lapse photography taken by the Deegan and Urban labs (Office of Polar Programs #0902153 and #1417664). Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR): Seasonal water table depth data, 2012-2024

The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. This data includes water table depth measurements collected from winter warming and control treatment plots at CiPEHR for the ice-free period of 2024. Note that the experimental warming portion of this experiment concluded in 2022. These data are a continuation of measurements taken at previously warmed plots but plots were not actively manipulated in 2023 and 2024.

Long-term monitoring of herpetofauna along the Salt and Gila Rivers in and near the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, ongoing since 2012

Waterways are often the focus of restoration efforts in urban areas. In arid regions, passive discharge of urban water sources may stimulate the recovery or growth of wetland and riparian features in dewatered or ephemeral aquatic systems. In the greater Phoenix metropolitan area (GPMA), sections of the Salt and Gila Rivers have been the targets of active restoration through seeding, planting, and irrigation. At the same time, revegetation has occurred in some sections of the rivers in response to runoff from urban water sources (e.g., storm drains). This dataset catalogs the results of herpetological surveys conducted at several locations along the Salt and Gila Rivers in and around the GPMA beginning in March 2012. Survey locations include riparian areas in urban and non-urban locations that have been (actively) restored or have revegetated in response to urban runoff, and that feature ephemeral or perennial sources of water. This is a long-term monitoring effort of the CAP LTER with on-going data collection.

GCE-LTER Altamaha River Plant Community Monitoring Survey in October 2012

A quadrat survey was conducted in October 2012 to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 3 sampling sites on the creekbank of the Altamaha River. The sites were chosen to capture the transition from Spartina alterniflora to Spartina cynosuroides (site SCSA) and the transition from Spartina cynosuroides to Zizaniopsis miliacea (sites ZSC1 and ZSC2). The quadrats were established as permanent plots in October 2012 by placing PVC stakes along the creekbank at each site. Plots were evenly spaced, but were not randomly located because the goal was to start with mixtures of vegetation in most of the plots, and vegetation was distributed in patches along the creekbanks. Therefore, these plots provide useful measures of vegetation change, but are not a random sample of the vegetation at the site. Plots will be replaced as needed in future years to replace any lost to disturbance. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in the data set. This survey will be repeated annually to assess changes in plant distribution and biomass in relation to environmental changes documented by other GCE LTER monitoring efforts.

Fall 2012 plant monitoring survey -- shoot height and flowering status of plants in permanent plots at GCE sampling sites 1-10

The quadrats were established as permanent plots at GCE sampling sites in October 2000 by placing wooden stakes at random locations across two nominal zones at each site, designated based on marsh structure (creekbank and high marsh). Several new plots were also added in October 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2012 to replace those lost due to catastrophic wrack disturbance or creek bank erosion. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in the data set with additional details recorded in GCE data set PLT-GCEM-1801. This survey will be repeated annually to assess changes in plant distribution and biomass in relation to environmental changes documented by other GCE LTER monitoring efforts.

Fall 2012 plant monitoring survey -- biomass calculated from shoot height and flowering status of plants in permanent plots at GCE sampling sites 1-10

The biomass of plants surveyed in permanent plots at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites in October 2012 was estimated based on allometric relationships between biomass and shoot height and flowering status derived for each site, zone, and species in October 2002 and October 2008. Biomass was only calculated for dominant species, including Spartina alterniflora, S. cynosuroides, Juncus roemerianus, and Zizaniopsis miliacea, as well as rarer species including Scirpus spp, Panicum spp. and Typha angustifolia. This data set is based on GCE plant monitoring survey data set PLT-GCEM-1311a, and allometric relationships were based on GCE data sets PLT-GCEM-0211b and PLT-GCEM-0711.

Dissolved Organic Matter Composition in Doboy Sound and the Altamaha River near Sapelo Island, Georgia in 2012-2013

The composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Altamaha River estuary and Doboy Sound near Sapelo Island, Georgia, was investigated at the molecular level using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry and stable carbon isotope analyses. DOM samples were collected in November 2012, May 2013, and September 2013 representing different hydrological regimes, including anomalously low-discharge conditions. DOM was also collected from water as it flooded and ebbed from an extensive marsh area at Sapelo Island in May 2013. The untargeted approach used allowed for identifying the DOM molecular signatures associated with different DOM sources in the estuary.

Microbially-Mediated Transformations of Estuarine Dissolved Organic Matter from Doboy Sound, Sapelo Sound and the Altamaha River near Sapelo Island, Georgia in 2012-2013

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) samples were collected from a marsh-dominated estuarine system (Altamaha River estuary, Doboy Sound and Sapelo Sound near Sapelo Island, Georgia), inoculated with native microbiological samples, and incubated in the dark for up to 70 days. Control and incubated DOM samples were then anlyzed using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry to investiage microbially-mediated transformations at the molecular level. Samples were collected at high tide in November 2012 and May 2013.

Mark-recapture data of the Northern Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus), Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 2012 – present

This data set includes spatially explicit mark-recapture data of the Northern Spring Salamander (Gyrinophilus porphyriticus) collected during the summer months (June – August) from downstream and upstream reaches in multiple streams in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Downstream reaches begin at the confluence with the Main Hubbard and extend upstream 500 meters and upstream reaches begin at the weir and extend downstream 500 meters. Downstream reaches contain brook trout and upstream reaches do not. We used a robust design framework with approximately 9 surveys per reach each summer (3 primary occasions with 3 secondary occasions each). Salamanders were captured by hand and marked with either Visual Implant Elastomer and/or a PIT tag. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. High-frequency, hourly, and daily measurements from Miers Valley Meteorological Station (MISM), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2012-2024, ongoing)

As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long-Term Ecological Research program, a spatially distributed, long-term climate monitoring network was established across the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, consisting of fourteen research-grade weather stations that continuously measure a standard suite of environmental parameters. Ecosystem processes in this region are strongly regulated by climatic drivers that exhibit high variability across both time and space, making accurate measurement of environmental variables at high temporal and spatial resolution essential to understanding the biophysical dynamics of this polar desert ecosystem. This data package includes measurements from the Miers Valley Meteorological Station (MISM), which was established in 2012 southeast of Lake Miers in Miers Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. Parameters include air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, photosynthetically active radiation, incoming and outgoing shortwave radiation, wind speed and direction, as well as soil bulk electrical conductivity, dielectric permittivity, temperature, and volumetric water content. Data are provided at high frequency (typically 15-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data. Since there is no universally accepted standard for handling gaps in time-series data, users are encouraged to work with the high-frequency data and establish their own criteria for acceptable data completeness to minimize any potential bias.

Saint Louis River Estuary Water Chemistry, Wisconsin, Minnesota, USA 2012 - 2013

These data pertain to water and sediments collected from the Saint Louis River Estuary (SLRE) and its nearby water sources by Luke Loken and collaborators for his Masters thesis and additional publications. In brief, we sampled SLRE surface waters and sediments for a variety of physical, chemical, and biological attributes. Ten estuary stations were sampled approximately monthly from April 2012 through September 2013. On four of the sampling campaigns, water was collected from an additional 20 sites. Sites were selected to represent a gradient from the Saint Louis River to Lake Superior and included several tributaries that drain directly into the estuary. This design aimed to understand the spatial and temporal mixing pattern of the estuary as it receives water from several rivers, 2 waste water treatment plant, and Lake Superior. We sampled the estuary to assess the magnitude and timing of source water contributions to the estuary and establish a baseline of chemical and physical measurements to aid in future limnological research. Additionally, we performed nitrogen and carbon cycling rate experiments to determine the estuary-wide influence on nitrate, ammonium, and dissolved organic carbon. This included 8 sediment denitrification, 1 nitrification, and 2 breakdown dissolved organic carbon (BDOD) surveys. This work was funded by the Minnesota and Wisconsin Sea Grant and in coordination with the establishment of the Lake Superior National Estuary Research Reserve (LSNERR).

Advective nitrate fluxes, sea surface chlorophyll concentrations and other physical metrics in the Santa Barbara Channel (2012-2019)

This data package includes 6 files: (1 & 2) In-situ nitrate concentrations at the surface and mixed layer depth, and collocated remotely-sensed and reanalysis quantities of satellite sea surface temperature, 15-day cumulative wind stress, satellite sea surface chlorophyll with a 5-day lag, index of offshore position of the California Current, indices for along-channel and across-channel distance, and index for day of the year. (3) An R script for generating generalized additive models (GAMs) to predict nitrate concentrations at the surface and at the mixed layer depth using the collocated data in files 1 & 2. (4) Daily maps of satellite sea surface chlorophyll concentrations (SSChl), High-frequency radar (HFR) surface currents, weather research and forecasting (WRF) model wind-derived vertical velocities, estimated nitrate concentrations at the surface and mixed layer depth, horizontal advective nitrate fluxes at the surface and vertical advective nitrate fluxes. (5) Daily time series of spatial mean SSChl, principal component amplitude of the first mode of variability in surface currents estimated using complex empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, alongshore pressure gradient, wind stress, spatial mean horizontal velocities at the western and eastern Santa Barbara Channel boundaries, spatial mean vertical velocities, spatial mean surface nitrate concentrations at the channel boundaries and across the entire channel, spatial mean mixed layer depth nitrate concentrations across the entire channel, spatial mean horizontal advective nitrate fluxes at the channel boundaries, and spatial mean vertical advective nitrate fluxes. SBC LTER: Reef: Abundance, size and fishing effort for California Spiny Lobster (Panulirus interruptus), ongoing since 2012

Data on abundance, size and fishing pressure of California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) are collected along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel. Spiny lobsters are an important predator in giant kelp forests off southern California. Two SBC LTER study reefs are located in or near the California Fish and Game Network of Marine Protected Areas (MPA), Naples and Isla Vista, both established as MPAs on 2012-01-01. MPAs provide a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of fishing on kelp forest community dynamics. Sampling began in 2012 and is ongoing. This dataset contains two tables. 1) Abundance and size data collected annually by divers in late summer before the start of the fishing season at five SBC LTER long term kelp forest study sites: two within MPAs (Naples and Isla Vista) and three outside (Arroyo Quemado, Mohawk and Carpinteria). 2) Fishing pressure, as determined by counting the number of commercial trap floats. Data are collected every two to four weeks during the lobster fishing season (October to March) at nine sites along the mainland, eight of which are also SBC LTER long-term kelp forest study reefs.
