<p>The General diagram of the proposed approach is shown in Figure 1.</p> <p>A fundamental problem in collective robotics is to have the group organize into global formations or patterns. These include simple patterns like circles, lines, uniform distribution within a circle or square, etc. In the presence of a central controller, these tasks are trivial, but this is not the case in a distributed system. The main goal is to have self-autonomy robots, where each behaves independently from the others based its surrounding environment including other robots&#39; behavior. Each robot might not be aware that it works within a group. Ducatelle et al.(Ducatelle, Di Caro, Pinciroli, Mondada, &amp; Gambardella, 2011) proposed a collective behavior based on network routing, capable of guiding a robot from a source area to a target. Similarly to what happens in packet routing, the robots keep a table of the distance of other robots with respect to the target. A robot can then use the entries in the table and reach the target.&nbsp;</p>

What is learned in approach-avoidance tasks? On the scope and generalizability of approach-avoidance effects

<p>Previous research has shown that approaching a stimulus makes it more positive, while avoiding a stimulus makes it more negative. The present research demonstrates that approach-avoidance behaviors have the potential to charge stimulus attributes such as color with evaluative meaning. This evaluation carries over to other stimuli with that feature. We address the latter point by assessing the influence of colors that were approached or avoided on the perceived attractiveness of persons wearing those colors. We show that wearing a certain color makes people appear more attractive when this color is associated with approach rather than avoidance. In line with a self-perception account of these effects, we obtained approach-avoidance effects on stimulus attributes only when participants carried out approach-avoidance behaviors towards these colors or imagined doing so. This set of experiments adds to the evaluative learning literature by demonstrating approach-avoidance effects on stimulus attributes and that these effects carry over to new classes of stimuli and new tasks. Moreover, we systematically investigated boundary conditions for these effects. Finally, with this research we introduce an ontogenetic perspective to research into colors and their influence on psychological functioning.</p>

Why don't all animals avoid inbreeding?

<p class="MsoCommentText"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Individuals are expected to avoid mating with relatives as inbreeding can reduce offspring fitness, a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. This has led to the widespread assumption that selection will favour individuals that avoid mating with relatives. However, the strength of inbreeding avoidance is variable across species and there are numerous cases where related mates are not avoided. Here we test if the frequency that related males and females encounter each other explains variation in inbreeding avoidance using phylogenetic meta-analysis of 41 different species from six classes across the animal kingdom. In species reported to mate randomly with respect to relatedness, individuals were either unlikely to encounter relatives, or inbreeding had negligible effects on offspring fitness. Mechanisms for avoiding inbreeding, including active mate choice, post-copulatory processes and sex biased dispersal, were only found in species with inbreeding depression. These results help explain why some species seem to care more about inbreeding than others: inbreeding avoidance through mate choice only evolves when there is both a risk of inbreeding depression and related sexual partners frequently encounter each other. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Data supporting Fear of sex: Sexual conflict exposed as avoidance in a parthenogenetic invertebrate

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Males and females often have divergent evolutionary interests, generating sexual conflicts. This is particularly true in organisms that exhibit facultative <span><span>sexuality</span></span>, whereby females are capable of reproducing without fitness costs of mating. Here we provide the first documented evidence with quantitative tracking showing that sex interacts with social context to determine space-use of females, in a pattern resembling predator <span><span>avoidance</span></span>. To achieve this, we labeled <i>Daphnia magna</i> with fluorescent nanoparticles and utilized a 3-D tracking platform to record pairs of individuals swimming. The recordings comprised either same-sex or opposite-sex pairings. We found that females swam faster, deeper, more horizontally and more linearly when exposed to males than when exposed to females. Simultaneously, we found that male behavior did not differ depending on swimming partner and, importantly, we observed no sexual dimorphism in swimming behaviors when swimming with the same sex. Our results suggest that the presence of males in a population has the potential to influence the distribution of individuals, similarly to known threats, such as predation. This highlights that sexual conflict has clear spatial consequences and should be considered in such ecological frameworks, like the Landscape of Fear (LOF) concept. In a broader context, the connection of the evolutionary and social concept of sexual conflict and the ecological concept of LOF may improve our understanding of population dynamics and the spatial and temporal distribution of individuals in natural ecosystems.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
