SBC LTER: Land: Hydrology: Stream discharge and associated parameters at Arroyo Hondo Creek , Upstream Side of 101 Bridge (HO00)

Stream Discharge and water temperature were collected with a Solinst Model 3001 LT Levelogger at Arroyo Hondo Creek at Upstream Side of Highway 101 Bridge, HO00 in the Santa Barbara coastal area (site ID: HO00). Data are reported hourly. Stage values were converted to discharge using a rating curve developed with stream channel cross-sections, roughness estimates and the HEC-RAS model.

A mixed mode cohesive model for FRP laminates incorporating large scale bridging behaviour - Datasets

<p>This data upload includes the experimental results from delaminating FRP-laminates. The experiment consists of DCB specimens where the beam ends are loaded with bending moments. Data set from ambient vibration monitoring and static loading of a steel stringer bridge subject to imposed damage

<p>This data set contains structural response measurements acquired from the Route 345 Bridge over Big Sucker Brook in Waddington, NY prior to demolition and replacement.&nbsp; This steel stringer bridge was instrumented with dual-axis accelerometers and strain transducers and response measurements were obtained prior to and following mechanically imposed damages.&nbsp; Accelerometer measurements were obtained under vehicle passes and strain measurements were acquired during static loading of the span with a truck positioned at three prescribed locations.&nbsp; All measurement data is contained in a single h5-file (hierarchical data format version 5).&nbsp; The data is shared with the intent of promoting the advancement of structural health monitoring and vibration-based damage detection.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Version 2 Note:&nbsp;</strong>This version corrects the strain measurement data.&nbsp; Due to an index counter error in the script that compiled the strain measurement data into the h5-file, the strain measurement data in the Version 1 data were incorrectly sourced from a single scenario.&nbsp; The strain measurements are corrected in this new version.&nbsp; No other changes were made in the h5-file.</p>

Machine Learning-Based Bridge Maintenance Optimization Model for Maximizing Performance within Available Annual Budgets

<p>Effective maintenance planning for bridges is crucial for maintaining their performance, safety, and minimizing maintenance costs. Timely implementation of interventions can improve the performance of bridges and avoid the need for costly interventions. However, bridge maintenance is often delayed due to inadequate planning and budget allocation, as well as resource constraints such as funding. With availability of historical condition data of bridges in databases such as the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) and National Bridge Elements (NBE), there is an opportunity to use data-driven methods to predict deterioration of bridge elements and optimize their maintenance interventions to maximize performance of bridges. This paper presents the development of&nbsp;a novel system that uses Machine Learning (ML) techniques to predict condition of concrete bridge elements and binary linear programming optimization method to&nbsp;identify the optimal selection of maintenance interventions and their timing to maximize the performance of bridges while complying with available annual budgets.&nbsp;Four ML methods are explored: decision tree, random forest, gradient boosting, and support vector machines. The results of the ML evaluation show that, while the values of the predictive performance metrics varied for different elements, random forest method had the best performance for all elements. A case study of a concrete bridge is analyzed to evaluate the performance of the system and demonstrate its new capabilities. The case study results show that the developed model identifies optimal maintenance interventions for various annual budgets over a 50-year study period. The primary contributions of this research to the body of knowledge are: (1) development of a novel system that integrates machine learning techniques and linear programming for predicting bridge element conditions and optimizing maintenance interventions; (2) modeling and predicting the deterioration of bridge elements based on health index metric; and (3) generating long-term maintenance plans for each of bridge elements to maximize the performance of bridges within available annual budgets. The present system is expected to support decision makers, such as highway agencies, in allocating limited financial resources for bridge maintenance more efficiently and cost-effectively.</p>

Bridging length scales in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors through internal strain and mesoscale dynamics

<p>Understanding structural and dynamic properties of inherently disordered systems at the mesoscale is crucial. This is particularly important in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs), which undergo significant and complex structural changes when operated in electrolyte. In this study, we investigate the mesoscale strain, reversibility, and dynamics of a model OMIEC material under external electrochemical potential using operando X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. Our results reveal mesoscale strain and structural hysteresis that depend on the sample's cycling history, establishing a comprehensive kinetic sequence bridging the macroscopic and microscopic behaviors of OMIECs. Furthermore, we uncover equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamics of charge carriers and material doping states, highlighting the unexpected coupling between charge carrier dynamics and mesoscale order. These findings advance our understanding of the structure-dynamics-function relationships in OMIECs, opening pathways for designing and engineering materials with improved performance and functionality in non-equilibrium states during device operation.</p>

PrimeKGQA, the dataset from paper: Bridging the Gap: Generating a Comprehensive Biomedical Knowledge Graph Question Answering Dataset

<p>Despite the plethora of resources such as large-scale&nbsp;corpora and manually curated Knowledge Graphs (KGs), the ability to perform reasoning with natural language inputs over biomedical graphs remains challenging due to insufficient training data. We&nbsp;propose a novel method for automatically constructing a Biomedical&nbsp;Knowledge Graph Question Answering (BioKGQA) dataset sourced&nbsp;from PrimeKG, the largest precision medicine-oriented KG. In total,<br>we create 83999 question-answer pairs along with their respective&nbsp;SPARQL queries. Our approach generates a diverse array of contextually relevant questions covering a wide spectrum of biomedical&nbsp;concepts and levels of complexity. We evaluate our method based on&nbsp;automatic metrics alongside manual annotations. We establish novel&nbsp;standards tailored for KGQA systems to highlight the linguistic correctness and semantical faithfulness of the generated questions based&nbsp;on extracted KG facts. The compiled dataset &ndash; PrimeKGQA &ndash; serves&nbsp;as a valuable benchmarking resource for advancing knowledge-driven biomedical research and evaluating KGQA system.</p>

Bridging the Gap between Autonomous and Predetermined Paradigms: The Role of Sampling in Evaluative Learning

<p>While most evaluative learning paradigms remove participants&rsquo; autonomy over the information they receive, other research traditions have demonstrated that information sampling has an important role in learning. We investigate the impact of information sampling on a central evaluative learning paradigm: evaluative conditioning. We compare a traditional evaluative conditioning paradigm with a paradigm in which participants have autonomy over the stimulus pairings they receive. Participants in the high-autonomy condition show a strong preference for positively paired CSs. Nevertheless, the strength of evaluative conditioning effects was independent of autonomy. Moreover, high-autonomy participants, but not their low-autonomy counterparts, demonstrate a relationship between sampling frequency and evaluations, in line with the interpretation that sampled stimuli become more positive, whereas ignored stimuli become more negative over the course of the learning phase. The present research provides a cornerstone for integrating several research traditions within and beyond the evaluative learning literature, providing a foundation for new insights and more comprehensive theories of evaluative learning.</p>

Developing Notification and Enforcement Systems to Communicate and Administer Bridge Load Postings

<p>State and local law enforcement agencies in the US strive to enforce weight restrictions on trucks and heavy vehicles travelling on public roads as a matter of public safety and as a way of safeguarding vital transportation infrastructure. This research aimed to identify plausible notification systems that can effectively communicate bridge load postings to dispatchers and drivers, investigate and suggest possible approaches to communicate potential detour routes, and identify corresponding enforcement methods required to successfully administer bridge load postings. This report discusses the current practices of bridge load posting notification and enforcement systems. Also, it presents an overview of the existing conditions of intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) in Louisiana that included: Traffic Management Centers (TMCs), Motorist Assistance Patrol (MAP) service, ITS devices, and technologies. A national survey was also conduct targeting US Departments of Transportation (DOTs) professionals and law enforcement agencies in USA to obtain their feedback and insights regarding the current bridge load posting notification and enforcement procedures/systems, its limitations and required modifications at their States. The results of this research suggest that improving the notification methods alone is not enough to ensure public compliance with posted weight limit on bridges, therefore, the enforcement methods need to be improved as well to enhance drivers&rsquo; compliance and to prolong the lifespan of bridges. The report concluded by providing recommendations that can improve the notification and enforcement systems to effectively communicate and administer bridge load postings</p>
