Data from: Accelerate low water corrosion: the microbial sulphur cycle in microcosm

Accelerated low water corrosion is a form of marine steel corrosion caused by bacterial activity. It has a global spread and is potentially responsible for billions of pounds of damage. We have determined in detail both the chemistry of corrosion products and the associated microbiology at a UK site. The corrosion products form a layered structure with iron sulphides at the steel surface and iron oxides and sulphates in contact with water. The iron sulphides are formed by reaction of steel with hydrogen sulphide formed by sulphate reducing bacteria and are oxidised through a series of sulphur oxidation states by sulphide oxidising bacteria, forming acid at all stages and encompassing the whole of the bacterial sulphur cycle. The bacteria involved are endemic in anoxic bed sediment, and the process is a response to the presence of steel as an electron donor, and the generation of anoxic microenvironments within corrosion products.

Data from: Study of mixed mode fracture toughness and fracture trajectories in gypsum interlayers in corrosive environment

Based on the engineering background of water dissolving mining for hydrocarbon storage in multi-laminated salt stratum, the mixed mode fracture toughness and fracture trajectory of gypsum interlayers soaked in half-saturated brine at various temperatures (20°C, 50°C and 80°C) were studied by using CSNBD (centrally straight-notched Brazilian disc) specimens with required inclination angles (0°, 7°, 15°, 22°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, 90°) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results showed: (i) The fracture load of gypsum specimens first decreased then increased with increasing inclination angle, due to the effect of friction coefficient. When soaked in brine, the fracture toughness of gypsum specimens gradually decreased with increasing brine temperature. (ii) When soaked in brine, the crystal boundaries of gypsum separated and became clearer, and the boundaries became more open between the crystals with increasing brine temperature. Besides, tensile micro-cracks appeared on the gypsum crystals when soaked in 50°C brine, and the intensity of tensile cracks became more severe when soaking in 80°C brine. (iii) The experimental fracture envelopes derived from the conventional fracture criteria and lay outside these conventional criteria. The experimental fracture envelopes were dependent on the brine temperature and gradually expanded outward as brine temperature increases. (iv) The size of FPZ (fracture process zone) was greatly dependent on the damage degree of materials and gradually increased with increase of brine temperature. The study has important implication for the control of shape and size of salt cavern.

Data from: Adsorption and corrosion inhibition behavior of new theophylline-triazole based derivatives for steel in acidic medium

The design and synthesis of a series of theophylline derivatives containing 1,2,3-triazole moieties is presented. The corrosion inhibition activities of these new triazole-theophylline compounds were evaluated by studying the corrosion of API 5L X52 steel in 1 M HCl media. The results showed that an increase in the concentration of the theophylline-triazole derivatives also increases the charge transference resistance (Rct) value, enhancing inhibition efficiency and decreasing the corrosion process. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under static conditions studies revealed that the best inhibition efficiencies (~90%) at 50 ppm are presented by the all- substituted compounds. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the compounds 4 and 5 analyzed exhibit physisorption-chemisorption process, with exception of the hydrogen 3, bromo 6 and iodo 7 substituted compound, which exhibit chemisorption process. The corrosion when submerging a steel bar in 1 M HCl was studied using SEM-EDS. This experiment showed that the corrosion process decreases considerably in the presence of 50 ppm of the organic inhibitors. Finally, theoretical study showed a correlation between EHOMO, hardness (η), electrophilicity (W), atomic charge and the inhibition efficiency in which the iodo 7 substituted compound presents the best inhibitor behavior.

Data from: Theoretical, thermodynamic and electrochemical analysis of Biotin drug as an impending corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 15% HCl

The corrosion mitigation efficiency of Biotin drug for mild steel in 15% HCl was thoroughly investigated by weight loss and electrochemical methods. The surface morphology was studied by Contact angle, Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), Atomic force microscope (AFM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. Quantum chemical calculation and Fukui analysis was done to correlate the experimental and theoretical data. The influence of concentration of inhibitor, immersion time, temperature, with activation energy, enthalpy and entropy has been reported. The mitigation efficiency of Biotin obtained by all methods was in good correlation with each other. Polarization studies revealed that Biotin acted as mixed inhibitor. The adsorption of Biotin was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Surface studies showed the hydrophobic nature of the steel with inhibitor and vindicated the formation of a film on the metal surface that reduced the corrosion rate.
