Proteomics analysis for: The platelet transcriptome and proteome in Alzheimer's disease and aging: an exploratory cross-sectional study
<p>Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and aging are associated with platelet hyperactivity. However, the mechanisms underlying abnormal platelet function in AD and aging are yet poorly understood. To explore the molecular profile of AD and aged platelets, we investigated platelet activation (i.e., CD62P expression), proteome and transcriptome in AD patients, non-demented elderly, and young individuals as controls. AD, aged and young individuals showed similar levels of platelet activation based on CD62P expression. However, AD and aged individuals had a proteomic signature suggestive of increased platelet activation compared with young controls. Transcriptomic profiling suggested the dysregulation proteolytic machinery involved in the regulation of platelet function, particularly in the ubiquitin-proteasome system in AD and autophagy in aging. The functional implication of these transcriptomic alterations remains unclear and requires further investigations. </p>
Effects of Covid-19 Vaccines on the Menstrual Cycle: A Cross-Sectional Study
<p>Background: Prior clinical studies that sought to investigate the safety and efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines did not list menstrual cycle changes as a side-effect. However, following reported cases of menstrual cycle disturbances after vaccination, this study sought to examine the link between Covid-19 vaccination and post-vaccine menstrual cycle abnormalities in pre- and post-menopausal women.</p> <p>Methods: A cross-sectional research design approach using online surveys was employed to investigate the link between vaccination and changes in menstrual cycle. The participants consisted of a cohort of 657 pre- and post-menopausal women with the majority drawn from the reproductive age group (25-44 years). The inclusion criteria was that participants must have received any type of Covid-19 vaccine, not be pregnant and those that did not have a negative diagnosis in any gynecologic condition. Of the eligible sample size, only 344 participants met the inclusion criteria. The sociodemographic and menstrual cycle data was collected from an online survey. Data was analyzed using descriptive, inferential chi-square tests, logistic regression, and correlation.</p> <p>Results: The results partially confirmed the findings from prior studies that Covid-19 vaccination is associated with significant changes in the women’s menstrual cycle flow and menstrual period length even after controlling for age, Body Mass Index, and ethnicity. Other menstrual cycle disturbances such as missed periods, cycle regularity, and spotting/vaginal bleeding were noted to be less significant. However, the extent of menstrual cycle changes was less severe and decreased after the second dose vaccination. It was found that 11.1% and 37.5% of post-menopausal women reported menstrual symptoms after the first and the second dose cycle respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion: The study concludes that although Covid-19 vaccines tend to adversely affect women’s menstrual cycle, these changes are short-lived. The findings have important implications in enhancing the success of Covid-19 vaccination programs by reducing cases of vaccine hesitancy among reproductive-age women.</p>

Evaluation of oxidative stress markers in Rwanda during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: a cross-sectional study
<p>SARS-CoV-2 is mainly described as endothelial dysfunction, and due to the bidirectional link between oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction, we initiated a program directed to the evaluation of the oxidative status of the population of Rwanda by measuring spectrophotometrically their plasma Reactive Oxygen Metabolites (dROMs) and Plasma Antioxidant Potential (PAT). The reference population was chosen to reflect the absence of actual or past SARS-CoV-2 infections as well as other clinically established infective status and reference intervals for d-ROM and PAT were identified.</p> <p>The average d-ROM was 378.6 UCARR with a standard deviation of 105.2. The average PAT value was 2853.6, with a standard deviation of 635.7 UCOR. On the basis of the published values for the Caucasian and East Asian populations, the average value of d-ROM obtained in Rwanda was significantly higher than expected. Conversely, the average PAT value was at the upper limit according to the averaged values for healthy Caucasian populations. The results of this study, the first so far reported on a sub-Saharan population, can effectively be used as a baseline value for clinical management of inflammatory conditions, for the stratification of at-risk individuals and to inform recommendations for effective use of public health resources.</p>
Factors associated with work engagement of nurses during the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan: Web-based cross-sectional study
<p>A cross-sectional survey using Google Form was conducted in a target population of 400 nurses working in acute care and psychiatric institutions in Chiba and Tokyo prefectures, Japan. A total of 209 nurses participated in the study. Of these participants, 25 participants with missing survey items were excluded, resulting in a final sample of 184 participants (valid response rate: 46.0%). The survey was conducted from August 8 to September 30, 2021, during the “fifth wave” of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the number of positive cases was increasing. </p>
