Benthic community response to different disturbance type events across six islands between two timepoints in the Central Pacific
A coral reef's response to disturbance can be driven by various factors including community composition. This dataset highlights benthic cover and its changes between two timepoints at six islands across the central Pacific. The survey islands include Ant Atoll, Pakin Atoll, and Pohnpei located within the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) as well as Upon and Savai'i in Samoa and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Survey years differed between sites but all sites had an estimated two-year time-difference between resampling. To extract benthic cover, photos were annotated using randomized points and labeled to their highest taxonomic resolution, down to genus-level for hard corals. Both abiotic and biotic substrate were identified and major functional groups included: hard corals, soft corals, invertebrates, turf algae, Halimeda spp., crustose coralline algae, and other (sand/debris/etc.). Disturbance type and community composition at the initial survey period drove changes in percent cover for major functional groups. Data was collected by annotating photos from transect surveys on a coral reef. This effort was completed by the 2020 SIO 'Pop-up' SURF REU that was formed in rapid response due to COVID-19 research limitations.
CBP01 Variable distance line-transect sampling of bird population numbers in different habitats on Konza Prairie (Reformatted to the ecocomDP Design Pattern)

This Level 1 data package was derived from the Level 0 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/knb-lter-knz/26/11. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Records of bird species based on line transect sampling, giving perpendicular distance of sighting from the transect line on 16 separate transects. Bird surveys were conducted 2-4 times per year in January, April, June, and October for a 29-year period from 1981 to 2009. Transects were designed to determine bird communities and population numbers associated with tallgrass prairie habitats with different experimental treatments (fire frequency, grazed by bison vs. ungrazed), riparian habitats on forest edge, and gallery forests dominated by oak woodland.
Sampling sites where ecological indices were used to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments in Argentina
Dataset is a compilation of all sampling sites of articles where ecological indices were used to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments from Argentina. Points of this dataset were extracted from 78 papers published between 1996 and 2018. We selected articles that use ecological indices to analyze some local environmental problematics or stressors. Using the type of index from each article we performed the kml file, which contained the categorized sampling sites by different symbols according to the ecological index: physico-chemical, biological, geomorphological and multimetric. We carried out a map (shapefile) with all the sampling sites referenced to the ecoregions of Argentina proposed by Burkart (1999).
Measurement differences between air temperature instruments used at H.J. Andrews meteorological stations
The PRIMET Horizontal Radiation Shield Comparison (PHRSC) experiment compares the difference between the air temperature measurements of a reference temperature sensor inside a fan aspirated radiation shield and temperature sensors located inside passively aspirated radiation shields including a cotton region shelter, Gill multi-plate shield, and a custom-fabricated model. Observed variables include air temperature, wind speed, and incoming and reflected solar radiation. Data was collected in the field between 2010 and 2017 at the Primary Meteorological Station (PRIMET) at H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest, located in Oregon’s Western Cascades (44.21, -122.26, elevation 430m).
Habitat use, consumption, and growth by slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus) held under different levels of temperature at Toolik Field Station 2019
We tested effects of temperature (12 and 19.3 degrees C; 27 days) on habitat use, consumption, and growth of slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus). To measure temperature selection by sculpin, we connected two 5.7 L tanks with a PVC pipe that was passable by sculpin (n = 12 tanks). We heated one side of the tank to 12 °C and the other to 19.3 °C using aquarium heaters.

This project calculates the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from 2010 National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery (1-meter resolution) for the central Arizona region. Because of their large size, data (as GeoTIFF files) for each survey year are provided as fifteen individual tiles each comprising a portion of the overall coverage area. An index of the relative position of each tile in the coverage area is provided as a pdf, png, and kml where the tile index contains a portion of the GeoTIFF file name (e.g., the relative position of the data file NAIP_NDVI_CAP2010-0000000000-0000000000.tif to the overall coverage area is identified by the index id 0000000000-0000000000 in the pdf, png, and kml index map). NPL01 Litterfall inputs to soil surface in watersheds with different fire treatments
Litter falling to the soil surface of tallgrass prairie was measured using 5 cm x 100 cm litterfall troughs. Mass, nitrogen, and phosphorus content were measured monthly or seasonally. Variables of interest include burning frequency and soil type.
NSC01 Chemistry and physical characteristics of soils from Konza LTER watersheds with different fire and grazing treatments
Soil chemical and physical characteristics are quantified on selected LTER watersheds adjacent to LTER vegetation sampling plots. Sampling was initiated in 1982, and is repeated every five years. A subset of variables (e.g., pH, Bray extractable P, total C, exchangeable cations) is measured on all sample dates, while additional specific variables (e.g., bulk density, soil texture, CaCO3 content, trace metals, extractable inorganic N) are measured less frequently. Methods for C and N analysis have changed over time. C content of samples from 1982, 1987 and 1997 was derived from Walkley-Black measurements of % soil organic matter (OM) content, using a conversion factor of 1.72 (%C = %OM / 1.72). Soil C content of samples from 1992, 2002 and later were determined by dry combustion and gas chromatography (i.e., Carlo-Erba C/N analyzer). N content of samples prior to 1992 was based on Kjeldahl digeston. N content of samples from 1992 on were determined by dry combustion and gas chromatography (i.e., Carlo-Erba C/N analyzer). Experimentally manipulated biota over a 30-40d period in two streams with distinctly different macrobiotic assemblages
Here we test the hypothesis that differences in macrobiotic assemblages can lead to differences in the quantity and quality of organic matter in benthic depositional environments among streams in montane Puerto Rico. We experimentally manipulated biota over a 30-40d period in two streams with distinctly different macrobiotic assemblages: one characterized by high densities of omnivorous shrimps (Decapoda: Atyidae and Xiphocarididae) and no predaceous fishes. To incorporate the natural hydrologic regime and to avoid confounding artifacts associated with cage enclosure/exclosure (e.g., high sedimentation), we used electricity as a mechanism for experimental exclusion, in situ. In each stream, shrimps and/or fishes were excluded from specific areas of rock substrata in four pools using electric "fences" attached to solar-powered fence chargers. In the stream lacking predaceous fishes (Sonadora), the unelectrified control treatment was almost exclusively dominated by high densities of omnivorous shrimps that constantly ingested fine particulate material from rock surfaces. Consequently, the control had significantly lower levels of inorganic sediments, organic material, carbon and nitrogen than the exclusion treatment, as well as less variability in these parameters. Tenfold more organic material (as ash-free dry mass, AFDM) and fivefold more nitrogen accrued in shrimp exclosures (10.6 g AFDM/m2, 0.2 g N/m2) than in controls (1.1 g AFDM/m2, 0.04 g N/m2). By reducing th quantity of fine particulate organic material and associated nitrogen in benthic environments, omnivorous shrimps potentially affect the the supply of this important resource to other trophic levels. The small amount of fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) that remained in control treatments (composed of sparse algal cells0 was of higher quality than that in shrimp exclosures. Spatial and temporal differences in shrimp numbers (1 year, 20 pools)
We added woody debris to stream pools in three streams in an experiment designed to increase cover for freshwater shrimp. We trapped four species of freshwater shrimp during 4 months following wood additions. Stream pool morphology was estimated using maximum depth, surface area, and volume.
