Photizo: an open-source library for cross-sample analysis of FTIR spectroscopy data
<p>With continually improved instrumentation, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy can now be used to capture thousands of high-resolution spectra for chemical characterisation of a sample. The spatially resolved nature of this method lends itself well to histological characterisation of complex biological specimens. However, commercial software currently available can make joint analysis of multiple samples challenging and, for large datasets, computationally infeasible. In order to overcome these limitations, we have developed Photizo - an open-source Python library for spectral analysis which includes functions for pre-processing, visualisation and downstream analysis, including principal component analysis, clustering, macromolecular quantification and biochemical mapping. This library can be used for analysis of spectroscopy data without a spatial component, as well as spatially-resolved data, such as data obtained via infrared (IR) microspectroscopy in scanning mode and IR imaging by focal plane array (FPA) detector. The data set made available here was FTIR microspectroscopy spatially resolved data used for demonstrating cross-sample analysis using Photizo including example metadata. </p>
Datasets for paper "Global biochemical profiling of fast-growing Antarctic bacteria isolated from meltwater ponds by high-throughput FTIR spectroscopy"
<p><span>Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a biophysical techniq</span><span>u<span>e used for non-destructive biochemical profiling of biological samples. It can provide comprehensive information about the total cellular biochemical profile of microbial cells. In this study, FTIR spectroscopy was used to perform biochemical characterization of twenty-nine bacterial strains isolated from the Antarctic meltwater ponds. The bacteria were grown on two forms of brain heart infusion (BHI) medium: agar at six different temperatures </span>(4, 10, 18, 25, 30, and 37 °C) and on broth at 18 °C. Multivariate data analysis approaches such as principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis were used to study the difference in biochemical profiles induced by the cultivation conditions.</span> <span>The observed results indicated a strong correlation between FTIR spectra and the phylogenetic relationships among the studied bacteria. The most accurate taxonomy-aligned clustering was achieved with bacteria cultivated on agar</span><span>. Cultivation on two forms of BHI medium provided biochemically different bacterial biomass. The impact of temperature on the total cellular biochemical profile of the studied bacteria was </span><span>species-specific</span><span>, however, similarly for all bacteria, lipid spectral region was the least affected while polysaccharide region was the most affected by different temperatures. <span>T</span>he biggest temperature-triggered changes of the cell chemistry were detected for bacteria with a wide temperature tolerance such <em><span>Pseudomonas lundensis </span></em><span>strains<em> </em>and<em> Acinetobacter lwoffii </em>BIM B-1558. </span></span></p>

NARSTO EPA_SS_HOUSTON TEXAQS2000 Particulate Matter FTIR Composition
The NARSTO_EPA_SS_HOUSTON_TEXAQS2000_PM_FTIR measurement data consist of absolute absorbance areas for organonitrates, sulfate, aliphatic carbon and carbonyl compounds for size segregated particulate matter collected using a Herring Low Pressure Impactor (LPI). These data were collected during August and September 2000 at the Houston PM Supersite locations (LaPorte, HRM3, and Aldine) during the Texas Air Quality Study 2000 (TexAQS).The Houston Supersite is one of several Supersites that was established in urban areas within the United States by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to better understand the measurement, sources, and health effects of suspended particulate matter (PM). The overall goals were to characterize the composition and identify the sources of particulate matter in Southeastern Texas, to develop and test new methods for characterizing fine particulate matter, and to collect data on the physical and chemical characterization of fine particulate matter that can be used to support exposure and health effects studies.NARSTO (formerly North American Research Strategy for Tropospheric Ozone) is a public/private partnership, whose membership spans government, the utilities, industry, and academe throughout Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
