Data from: Dispersal out of Wallacea spurs diversification of Pteropus flying foxes, the world's largest bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera)

<p><b>Aim: </b>Islands provide opportunities for isolation and speciation. Many landmasses in the Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA) are oceanic islands, and founder-event speciation is expected to be the predominant form of speciation of volant taxa on these islands. We studied the biogeographic history of flying foxes, a group with many endemic species and a predilection for islands, to test this hypothesis and infer the biogeographic origin of the group.</p> <p><b>Location: </b>Australasia, Indo-Australian Archipelago, Madagascar, Pacific Islands</p> <p><b>Taxon: </b><i>Pteropus</i> (Pteropodidae)</p> <p><b>Methods: </b>To infer the biogeographic history of <i>Pteropus</i>, we sequenced up to 6169 bp of genetic data from 10 markers and reconstructed a multilocus species tree of 34 currently recognized <i>Pteropus</i> species and subspecies with 3 <i>Acerodon</i> outgroups using <span>BEAST</span> and subsequently estimated ancestral areas using models implemented in <span>BioGeoBEARS</span>.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>Species-level resolution was occasionally low because of slow rates of molecular evolution and/or recent divergences. Older divergences, however, were more strongly supported and allow the evolutionary history of the group to be inferred. The genus diverged in Wallacea from its common ancestor with <i>Acerodon</i>; founder-event speciation out of Wallacea was a common inference. <i>Pteropus </i>species in Micronesia and the western Indian Ocean were also inferred to result from founder-event speciation.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions: </b>Dispersal between regions of the IAA and the islands found therein fostered diversification of <i>Pteropus </i>throughout the IAA and beyond. Dispersal in <i>Pteropus</i> is far higher than in most other volant taxa studied to date, highlighting the importance of inter-island movement in the biogeographic history of this large clade of large bats.</p>

Comparative data for dance fly eye morphology and female ornamentation

<p class="western">These data were collected as part of a comparative study of the relationship between female ornamentation and sexual dimorphism in eye morphology. Data come from specimens collected in the field in Scotland near Loch Lomond in the summers of 2009, 2010, and 2011 as well as the summer of 2012 near Glen Williams in Ontario, Canada. The repository contains raw image files including information on magnifications at which these were taken, excel spreadsheets of morphological measurements taken from these images, a dataset from search of Collin's (<span>1961</span>) key to the Empidinae for reports of sexual dimorphism and exaggerations of male eye morphology, and an Rnotebook file detailing the analytical steps taken.</p>

Snow flies self-amputate freezing limbs to sustain behavior at sub-zero temperatures

<p><span>All living things are profoundly affected by temperature. In spite of the thermodynamic constraints on biology, some animals have evolved to live and move in extremely cold environments. Here, we investigate behavioral mechanisms of cold tolerance in the snow fly (<em>Chionea</em> spp.), a flightless crane fly that is active throughout the winter in boreal and alpine environments of the northern hemisphere. Using thermal imaging, we show that adult snow flies maintain the ability to walk down to an average body temperature of -7 °C. At this supercooling limit, ice crystallization occurs within the snow fly's hemolymph and rapidly spreads throughout the body, resulting in death. However, we discovered that snow flies frequently survive freezing by rapidly amputating legs before ice crystallization can spread to their vital organs. Self-amputation of freezing limbs is a last-ditch tactic to prolong survival in frigid conditions that few animals can endure. Understanding the extreme physiology and behavior of snow insects is important at this moment when the alpine ecosystems they inhabit are rapidly changing due to anthropogenic climate change.</span></p>
