Data from: Genetic evidence for high propagule pressure and long-distance dispersal in monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) invasive populations
The monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) is a successful invasive species that does not exhibit life history traits typically associated with colonizing species (e.g., high reproductive rate or long-distance dispersal capacity). To investigate this apparent paradox, we examined individual and population genetic patterns of microsatellite loci at one native and two invasive sites. More specifically, we aimed to evaluate the role of propagule pressure, sexual monogamy, and long-distance dispersal in monk parakeet invasion success. Our results indicate little loss of genetic variation at invasive sites relative to the native site. We also found strong evidence for sexual monogamy from patterns of relatedness within sites, and no definite cases of extra-pair paternity in either the native site sample or the examined invasive site. Taken together, these patterns directly and indirectly suggest that high propagule pressure has contributed to monk parakeet invasion success. In addition, we found evidence for frequent long-distance dispersal at an invasive site (~100km) that sharply contrasted with previous estimates of smaller dispersal distance made in the native range (~2km), suggesting long-range dispersal also contributes to the species' spread within the United States. Overall, these results add to a growing body of literature pointing to the important role of propagule pressure in determining, and thus predicting, invasion success, especially for species whose life history traits are not typically associated with invasiveness.

Data from: Molecular dynamics simulation of the interaction between palmitic acid and high pressure CO2
<p>In this study, molecular dynamics simulation was used to explore the interaction characteristics of palmitic acid and CO2, and the effects of temperature and pressure on the solubility of palmitic acid in CO2 were investigated. In the range of 293K-353K and 5MPa-30MPa, the snapshot of palmitic acid distribution in CO2 shows that the molecular chain of palmitic acid in high-density CO2 system is more straight and more dispersed than that in low-density CO2 system. The radial distribution function further clearly shows that the solubility of palmitic acid in CO2 decreases with the increase of temperature and increases with the increase of pressure, which is consistent with the fatty acid solubility data reported in the literature and the setting rules of supercritical CO2 extraction process conditions. As the temperature decreases and the pressure increases, the interaction energy between palmitic acid and CO2 increases, which is conducive to overcoming the intermolecular force of palmitic acid and promoting dissolution. The solubility parameters of palmitic acid and CO2 can better reflect the trend of palmitic acid solubility changing with temperature and pressure, which can play a guiding role in the determination of process conditions and even the development of new processes.</p>

Manduca sexta experience high parasitoid pressures in the field but minor fitness costs of consuming plant secondary compounds
<p>Plant-herbivore co-evolutionary interactions have led to a range of plant defenses that minimize insect damage and a suite of counter-adaptations that allow herbivores to feed on defended plants. Consuming plant secondary compounds results in herbivore growth and developmental costs but can have beneficial effects such as deterrence or harm of parasitoid enemies. Therefore, the role of secondary compounds on herbivore fitness must be considered in the context of the abundance and level of harm from natural enemies and the costs herbivores incur feeding on plant secondary compounds.</p> <ol> <li>In this study, I combined field measurements of <em>Cotesia congregata</em> wasp parasitism pressure with detailed measurements of the costs of plant secondary compounds across developmental stages in the herbivore host, <em>Manduca sexta</em>.</li> <li>I show that <em>C. congregata</em> parasitoids exert large negative selective pressures, killing 31-57% of <em>M. sexta</em> larvae in the field. <em>Manduca sexta </em>developed fastest during instars most at risk for parasitoid oviposition but growth was slowed by consumption of plant secondary compounds. The negative effects of consuming plant secondary compounds as larvae influenced adult size traits but there were no immune, survival, or fecundity costs.</li> <li>These results suggest that developmental costs experienced by <em>M. sexta</em> herbivores consuming defensive compounds are minor in comparison to the strong negative survival pressures from abundant parasitoid enemies.</li> </ol>

<p>This dataset contains experimental data collected on chrysene, C18H12, in a diamond anvil cell at pressures up to 10 GPa and a temperature range of 30-300 C</p> <p>Experimental data: synchrotron source FTIR data collected at Beamline X01DC in 2009, using the instrumentation documented in "<a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/jp105020f">Stability of Coronene at High Temperature and Pressure</a>," <em>JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY B</em>, Vol: 114, Pages: 15753-15758, ISSN: 1520-6106, doi: 10.1021/jp105020f. FTIR-microspectrometry in transmission was performed using synchrotron light at the Swiss Light Source operated in top-up mode. Thus the infrared intensity remains constant with time. The IR focus available at the end of the beamline was coupled to the side port of a Bruker Vertex 70 FTIR spectrometer with an <em>f</em>1 = 34 mm/<em>f</em>2 = 213 mm ellipsoidal mirror. The spectrometer, equipped with a KBr beamsplitter, was coupled to the input of a Bruker Hyperion IR microscope without any additional optics. The microscope was equipped with two ×15 gold-coated Cassegrain objectives. The illuminated region of the sample was determined by an aperture of some 20−45 μm × 20−45 μm. In order to reduce the effect of scattered light and to enhance contrast fidelity, an identical conjugate aperture was placed between the collecting optics and the nitrogen-cooled mercury−cadmium−telluride (MCT) detector. Resolution and number of coadded scans were 4 cm<sup>−1</sup> and 256, respectively. Crystals were observed in parallel by use of white light and a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera.</p> <p>Each zip file contains data files in raw (OPUS) and plain text (.dpt) formats, and a pdf scane of the labbook, which provides a key to relate the file names to the pressure/temeprature of the sample. Raw files are provided for both the background and the sample; plain text files were created from processed files. </p>

Data from: Adaptations and responses of the common dandelion to low atmospheric pressure in high altitude environments
<p>Atmospheric pressure is an important, yet understudied factor that may shape plant ecology and evolution.</p> <p>By growing plants under controlled conditions at different experimental stations in the Swiss alps, we evaluated the impact of ecologically realistic atmospheric pressures between 660 and 950 hPa on the growth and defence of different dandelion populations.</p> <p>Low atmospheric pressure was associated with reduced root growth and defensive sesquiterpene lactone production. Defence suppression only occurred in populations originating from lower altitudes. Populations from higher altitudes constitutively produced less sesquiterpene lactones and did not suffer from suppression under low atmospheric pressure.</p> <p><em>Synthesis</em>. We conclude that atmospheric pressure modulates root growth and defence traits, and that evolutionary history shapes plant phenotypic responses to atmospheric pressure. Our findings have important implications for our understanding of altitudinal gradients and the future use of plants as a source of food and bioactive metabolites in extraterrestrial habitats.</p>
