Long-term seedling and small sapling census data from the Barro Colorado Island 50 ha Forest Dynamics Plot, Panama
<p>Tropical forests are well known for their high woody plant diversity. Processes occurring at early life stages are thought to play a critical role in maintaining this high diversity and shaping the composition of tropical tree communities. To evaluate hypothesized mechanisms promoting tropical tree species coexistence and influencing composition, we initiated a census of woody seedlings and small saplings in the permanent 50-ha Forest Dynamics Plot (FDP) on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama. Situated in old-growth, lowland tropical moist forest, the BCI FDP was originally established in 1980 to monitor trees and shrubs ≥1 cm diameter at 1.3 m above ground (dbh) at ca. 5-yr intervals. However, critical data on the dynamics occurring at earlier life stages were initially lacking. Therefore, in 2001 we established a 1-m<sup>2</sup> seedling plot in the center of every 5 x 5 m section of the BCI FDP. All freestanding woody individuals ≥20 cm tall and <1 cm dbh (hereafter referred to as seedlings) were tagged, mapped, measured, and identified to species in 19,313 1-m<sup>2</sup> seedling plots. Because seedling dynamics are rapid, we censused these seedling plots every 1–2 years. Here we present data from the 14 censuses of these seedling plots conducted between the initial census in 2001 to the most recent census, in 2018. This data set includes nearly 1M observations of ~185,000 individuals of >400 tree, shrub, and liana species. These data will permit spatially-explicit analyses of seedling distributions, recruitment, growth, and survival for hundreds of woody plant species. In addition, the data presented here can be linked to openly-available, long-term data on the dynamics of trees and shrubs ≥1cm dbh in the BCI FDP, as well as existing data sets from the site on climate, canopy structure, phylogenetic relatedness, functional traits, soil nutrients, and topography.</p>
The dynamic matrix predicts population response to long-term experimental forest fragmentation
<div><strong>Context</strong></div> <div> </div> <div>Earth's forests are fragmented. Species' long-term persistence depends on their conservation in fragmented landscapes with remnants embedded in a matrix of human land use. This matrix influences species' persistence in fragments by determining their degree of isolation and the extent to which edge effects alter habitat. Matrix habitat is often dynamic, so its impact on persistence of remnant species changes over time.</div> <div> </div> <div><strong>Objectives</strong></div> <div> </div> <div>Previous research showed that the abundance response of predatory beetle species to matrix habitat predicted their response in fragments with a log-response ratio of about 0.5. When abundance declined in the matrix, there was a smaller but predictable decline in fragments. However, the predictive utility of a fragment:matrix log-response ratio needs testing with functionally different species, more detailed data, and a focus on mechanism.</div> <div> </div> <div><strong>Methods</strong></div> <div> </div> <div>In the Wog Wog habitat fragmentation experiment, we follow a detritivorous amphipod 27 years after forest fragmentation.</div> <div> </div> <div><strong>Results</strong></div> <div> </div> <div>The amphipod's response in habitat fragments was predicted by its response in the matrix with a log-response ratio of about 0.5, similar to predatory beetles. The amphipod's response was explained by its abiotic niche. The amphipod's short-term response did not predict its long-term response.</div> <div> </div> <div><strong>Conclusions</strong></div> <div> </div> <div>The log-response ratio might generalize across the invertebrate food web. For two groups within the Wog Wog experiment, a species' dynamic response in matrix habitat predicted its persistence in fragments. Future work should explore the generality of this finding. With knowledge of projected land use of matrix habitat, a species' matrix response could be used for management planning.</div>

Long-term Dynamics in Soil Field Available Nitrogen and Potentially Mineralizable Nitrogen in a Chihuahuan Desert Grassland at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1989-2014)
Associated with a project that was based upon the assumption that nitrogen may limit net primary plant production in desert grasslands, this project began measuring available inorganic soil N and potentially mineralizable N of soils at two desert grassland locations. Both available N and potentially mineralizable N were greatest following a drought period in 1989, declined during wetter periods that followed and remained relatively stable until another extended drought period. After drought in 1995-6, both forms of soil N increased, indicating the potential for greater NPP following drought and lower potential NPP during periods of normal precipitation.
Rainfall pulses mediate long-term plant community compositional dynamics in a semi-arid rangeland
<p>1. Semi-arid rangelands, comprising more than 40% of the Earth's land surface, provide critical ecosystem services. Worldwide, these ecosystems are experiencing rapid degradation due to overgrazing and precipitation changes. However, how plants respond to these interacting factors remains relatively unexplored, and precisely which and how rainfall factors determine plant community dynamics in rangelands has not been well developed.</p> <p>2. We used a long-term (1953‒2018) dataset from semi-arid rangeland to investigate coupled effects of grazing intensity and rainfall intensity (the total amount of precipitation) on different groups of plant cover (herbaceous, woody, and cacti plants) using linear mixed-effects models, redundancy analysis and structural equation models. We examined how rainfall intensity influenced plant cover dynamics according to pulse size (intensity over time) categories, which we analyzed at three scales: yearly, within the wet season only (June to September), and within the dry season only (October to May). </p> <p>3. Plant community cover showed a humpbacked trend in the last six decades, mostly through changes in woody plants. Although both grazing intensity and rainfall presented similar humpbacked trends with plant community cover, our models demonstrated that the reduction of plant cover from the 1990s has been mainly caused by a decrease of rainfall rather than grazing intensity, particularly due to profound reductions of the intensity of relatively small rainfall pulses (e.g., 5.1 ~ 15 mm·day<sup>-1</sup>) during the dry season. Specifically, these small rainfall pulses can increase plant cover of all subgroups of woody and herbaceous species, thereby increasing plant community cover. Moreover, rainfall pulses during the wet season had negative effects on herbaceous species and positive effects on woody plants. These results suggest a phenological niche partitioning between woody plants and herbaceous in subtropical rangelands.</p> <p>4. <i>Synthesis and applications.</i><b> </b>Our results show how critical seasonal rainfall pulses are for regulating plant community compositional dynamics, which has significant implications for rangeland management and our ability to adapt and mitigate amplified climate influences in semi-arid ecosystems.</p>
