Data from: Nutrient limitation in tropical secondary forests following different management practices
Secondary forests now make up more than half of all tropical forests, and constraints on their biomass accumulation will influence the strength of the terrestrial carbon (C) sink in the coming decades. However the variance in secondary tropical forest biomass for a given stand age and climate is high and our understanding of why is limited. We constructed a model of terrestrial C, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) cycling to examine the influence of disturbance and management practices on nutrient limitation and biomass recovery in secondary tropical forests. The model predicted that N limited the rate of forest recovery in the first few decades following harvest, but that this limitation switched to P approximately 30-40 years after abandonment, consistent with field data on N and P cycling from secondary tropical forest chronosequences. Simulated biomass recovery agreed well with field data of biomass accumulation following harvest (R2=0.80). Model results showed that if all biomass remained on site following a severe disturbance such as blowdown, regrowth approached pre-disturbance biomass in 80-90 years, and recovery was faster following smaller disturbances such as selective logging. Field data from regrowth on abandoned pastures were consistent with simulated losses of nutrients in soil organic matter, particularly P. Following any forest disturbance that involved the removal of nutrients (i.e., except blowdown), forest regrowth produced reduced biomass relative to the initial state as a result of nutrient loss through harvest, leaching and/or sequestration by secondary minerals. Differences in nutrient availability accounted for 49-94% of the variance in secondary forest biomass C at a given stand age. Management lessons from this study are the importance of strategies that help retain nutrients on site, recognizing the role of coarse woody debris in immobilization and subsequent release of nutrients, and the potential for nutrient additions to enhance biomass growth and recovery in secondary tropical forests.
Data from: The Fear Reduction Exercised Early (FREE) approach to management of low back pain in general practice: a pragmatic cluster-randomised controlled trial
Background: Effective and cost-effective primary care treatments for low back pain (LBP) are required to reduce the burden of the world's most disabling condition. This study aimed to compare the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the Fear Reduction Exercised Early (FREE) approach to LBP (intervention) with usual general practitioner (GP) care (control). Methods and findings: This pragmatic, cluster-randomised controlled trial with process evaluation and parallel economic evaluation was conducted in the Hutt Valley, New Zealand. Eight general practices were randomly assigned (stratified by practice size) with a 1:1 ratio to intervention (4 practices; 34 GPs) or control group (4 practices; 29 GPs). Adults presenting to these GPs with LBP as their primary complaint were recruited. GPs in the intervention practices were trained in the FREE approach, and patients presenting to these practices received care based on the FREE approach. The FREE approach restructures LBP consultations to prioritise early identification and management of barriers to recovery. GPs in control practices did not receive specific training for this study, and patients presenting to these practices received usual care. Between 23 September 2016 and 31 July 2017, 140 eligible patients presented to intervention practices (126 enrolled) and 110 eligible patients presented to control practices (100 enrolled). Patient mean age was 46.1 years (SD 14.4), and 46% were female. The duration of LBP was less than 6 weeks in 88% of patients. Primary outcome was change from baseline in patient participant Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) score at 6 months. Secondary patient outcomes included pain, satisfaction, and psychosocial indices. GP outcomes included attitudes, knowledge, confidence, and GP LBP management behaviour. There was active and passive surveillance of potential harms. Patients and outcome assessors were blind to group assignment. Analysis followed intention-to-treat principles. A total of 122 (97%) patients from 32 GPs in the intervention group and 99 (99%) patients from 25 GPs in the control group were included in the primary outcome analysis. At 6 months, the groups did not significantly differ on the primary outcome (adjusted mean RMDQ score difference 0.57, 95% CI −0.64 to 1.78; p = 0.354) or secondary patient outcomes. The RMDQ difference met the predefined criterion to indicate noninferiority. One control group participant experienced an activity-related gluteal tear, with no other adverse events recorded. Intervention group GPs had improvements in attitudes, knowledge, and confidence compared with control group GPs. Intervention group GP LBP management behaviour became more guideline concordant than the control group. In cost-effectiveness, the intervention dominated control with lower costs and higher Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY) gains. Limitations of this study were that although adequately powered for primary outcome assessment, the study was not powered for evaluating some employment, healthcare use, and economic outcomes. It was also not possible for research nurses (responsible for patient recruitment) to be masked on group allocation for practices. Conclusions: Findings from this study suggest that the FREE approach improves GP concordance with LBP guideline recommendations but does not improve patient recovery outcomes compared with usual care. The FREE approach may reduce unnecessary healthcare use and produce economic benefits. Work participation or health resource use should be considered for primary outcome assessment in future trials of undifferentiated LBP.
Persistence of seed dispersal in agroecosystems: effects of landscape modification and intensive soil management practices in avian frugivores, frugivory and seed deposition in olive croplands
<p>Farming impacts on animal-mediated seed dispersal through mechanisms operating at least at two spatial scales: first, at the landscape scale, through habitat loss and land conversion to agriculture/livestock grazing, and second, by local intensification (farm scale) of the agricultural practices. Nonetheless, these two scales of farming impact on the seed dispersal function have been rarely integrated. In particular, studies evaluating the effect of agriculture in the seed dispersal function of frugivorous birds in Mediterranean ecosystems are lacking. We evaluate the role of the landscape transformation, from fruit-rich woodland habitats to olive grove landscapes, together with the local intensive practices of soil management on the persistence of the seed dispersal function for Mediterranean fleshy-fruited plants in olive landscapes of south Spain.</p> <p>We used bird censuses, mist-nets and seed traps to characterize avian frugivore assemblages, frugivory, and seed deposition in seminatural woodland habitat (SNWH) patches and olive fields of 40 olives farms of 20 localities distributed across the whole range of olive cultivation in Andalusia (southern Spain).</p> <p>We found that despite of a still remarkable dispersal function in olive grove landscapes, avian frugivore abundance and diversity, frugivory, and seed arrival decreased in olive fields compared to SNWH patches. Likewise, SNWH cover loss and/or olive growing expansion decreased avian frugivory and seed arrival. Interestingly, habitat effects in the olive farms often depended on the landscape context. In particular, less diverse fruit-eating bird assemblages pooled in SNWH patches as olive grove cover increased or SNWH decreased in the landscape, while remained relatively invariant in the olive fields. Finally, compared to conventional intensive agriculture, low-intensity management increased frugivory and seed deposition.</p> <p>We conclude that olive fields are less permeable to frugivores than expected by its agroforest-like nature, and that presence of SNWH patches is crucial for the maintenance of frugivory and seed dispersal in agricultural landscapes. Results evidence that woodland habitat loss by olive expansion and the intensive practices seriously threaten the dispersal service in olive-dominated landscapes. Maintenance, restoration and promotion of woodland patches should be prioritized for the conservation of the seed dispersal service and for enhancing the functional connectivity in human-shaped olive landscapes.</p>
Soil carbon composition and persistence under various management practices on Mollisols
<p>This dataset contains information of the manuscript entitled "Persistent soil carbon enhanced in Mollisols by well-managed grasslands but not annual grain or dairy forage cropping systems".</p> <p>Grasslands-derived Mollisols cover a large area globally and are usually under intensive agricultural production, which has liberated large amounts of carbon (C) into the atmosphere. Whether improved management practices such as no-till, diversified crop rotations, legumes and/or manure additions, or re-establishing perennial grasslands and integrating livestock can restore soil C on Mollisols is unclear. In this study, we utilized the Wisconsin Integrated Cropping Systems Trial (WICST), a long-term trial comparing conventional and alternative agricultural systems in the North Central USA, and studied soil C composition and persistence, and their relationships with soil microbial attributes after 29 years of different agricultural management. </p> <p>The soil C composition data include particulate organic matter (POM)-C, which is believed to be primarily plant-derived and unprocessed or partially processed by microbes, and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM)-C, which is believed to be mostly microbial-derived and simple structured. These soil C fractions were obtained by physical fractionation (53 µm). Diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was used to study the composition of MAOM (Aliphatic C vs. Aromatic C).</p> <p>Soil microbial attributes studied include soil microbial biomass C (by chloroform fumigation method), microbial C-use efficiency (CUE) (by <sup>13</sup>C-tracing method), and microbial necromass (amino sugars biomarkers, including glucosamine, muramic acids, galactosamine, and mannosamine). Activities of oxidative enzymes were studied to assess the potential of soil organic matter oxidation under these different management regimes.</p> <p>These data suggested that on the Mollisols, only perennial pastures that were managed by rotational grazing could enhance soil (0-30 cm) carbon stock and persistence compared to the conventional continuous corn system that had annual tillage. No-till did not increase soil C stock or persistence, while including legumes/manure in crop rotations could enhance microbial C cycling, but could not enhance the stock of persistent MAOM-C. </p>
Quantitative assessment of research data management practice - 2021
<p>This survey aims to investigate research data management practices at EPFL and integrate their results into specific academic services. The previous two editions, in collaboration with TU Delft, Cambridge University and Illinois University, were carried out in 2017 and 2019.</p> <p>The objective of these surveys is to collect information on researchers' habits in terms of management of their research data, as well as to identify their needs for data curation services/support. Effect of Project Management Practices on the Improvement of Irish Potatoes Value Chain Project: A Case of SDGP Project in Musanze District, Rwanda (2020-2022)
<p><span>This study investigates the impact of project management practices on the improvement of the Irish potatoes value chain project in Musanze District, Rwanda. It focuses on assessing the effects of project planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation on the project's success. Using a census method due to a small target population of 135, which included SDGP staff and local agricultural representatives, the study utilized both primary and secondary data, analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS.</span></p> <p><span>The results indicate that project management practices, particularly planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation, have a strong positive correlation with project improvement. However, the study also highlights some areas of concern, such as inadequate detailed planning and beneficiary involvement. With an R-squared value of .862, these practices explain 86.2% of the variations in project improvement.</span></p> <p><span>Conclusively, the study affirms that effective project management significantly enhances the Irish potatoes value chain project in Musanze District. Recommendations include refining the planning process, enhancing beneficiary involvement, improving risk management during implementation, and ensuring effective communication and use of monitoring and evaluation findings to foster better project outcomes.</span></p> <p><span>Top of Form</span></p> <p><strong><span>Key words:</span></strong><span> </span><span>project management practices, project improvement, project planning, project </span></p>
Records Management Practices in the Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria: Implications for Administrative Effectiveness
<p>The study assessed records management practices in the Assemblies of Church and its implications on administrative effectiveness. Total enumeration was used to elicit 1,395 respondents from the Church with the use of questionnaire. Data obtained were described with the use of questionnaire and analyzed with Pearson’ Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). Results showed that financial, minutes, annual report and other records were created and managed. However, financial records, board meeting records, church activities record(s) and income and expenditure records were adequately managed. Minutes records were the records of long-term value created and maintained, and most of the records were kept in the archives. It was established that relationship existed between records managed and administrative effectiveness in the Church. Thus, records managed properly are therefore crucial for administrative effectiveness.</p>

Cover crop and nitrogen rate management practices influence corn (Zea mays) NDVI and nitrogen content
<p>Cover crops are rarely adopted in the northern Corn Belt because of short growing periods but could provide benefits when grown between wheat (<em>Triticum aestivum</em> L<em>.</em>) and corn (<em>Zea mays</em> L<em>.</em>). We evaluated corn NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) and leaf N (at six leaf, ear leaf, 75% silk, and physiological maturity), over three growing seasons in response to factorial treatments of cover crop (annual ryegrass [<em>Lolium perenne</em> L. ssp. <em>multiflorum </em>(Lam.) Husnot], radish [Raphanus sativus L.], and no-cover control) and N rate (0X, 0.25X, 0.5X, and 1X) relative to the recommended rate based on pre-plant soil tests (157–190 kg N ha<sup>–1</sup>). Grain N was also measured in the last study year (2016) to evaluate if leaf N indicated grain N. Radish cover crop increased corn NDVI relative to the no-cover control, but annual ryegrass decreased NDVI relative to no-cover control. This response to cover crop treatment suggests that radish cover crop may improve corn nutritional status. Corn receiving 1X N rate had the slowest decrease in leaf N over the growing season, but 2016 data revealed that grain from all treatments receiving some level of N had similar N content. Root biomass was also highest in the 0.5X N rate treatment and could explain the previously reported result that 0.5X N rate results in highest corn yield. Taken together, these results suggest that half the recommended N fertilizer can be used with little effect on nutritional status of corn following spring wheat in the northern Corn belt.</p>
