Data for: Sex-specific transgenerational plasticity: Developmental temperatures of mothers and fathers have different effects on sons and daughters

<p>Each parent can influence offspring phenotypes via provisioning of the zygote or sex-specific DNA methylation. Transgenerational plasticity may therefore depend on environmental conditions experienced by each parent. We tested this hypothesis by conducting a fully factorial experiment across three generations of guppies (<em>Poecilia reticulata</em>), determining the effects of warm (28°C) and cold (21°C) thermal backgrounds of mothers and fathers on mass and length, and thermal performance (sustained [Ucrit] and sprint swimming speeds, citrate synthase and lactate dehydrogenase activities; 18, 24, 28, 32 and 36°C test temperatures) of sons and daughters. Offspring sex was significant for all traits except for sprint speed. Warmer mothers produced sons and daughters with reduced mass and length, and warmer fathers produced shorter sons. U<sub>crit</sub> of male offspring was greatest when both parents were raised at 28°C, and warmer fathers produced daughters with greater U<sub>crit</sub>. Similarly, warmer fathers produced sons and daughters with greater metabolic capacities. We show that thermal variation experienced by parents can modify offspring phenotypes, and that predicting the impacts of environmental change on populations would require knowledge of the thermal background of each mothers and fathers, particularly where sexes are spatially segregated.</p>

A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Distance Laughter Therapy for Mothers' Level of Depression, Anxiety, and Parental Stress during the COVID-19 Pandemic

<p>Presented here are both quantitative and qualitative datasets from a study titled &#39;A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of&nbsp;Distance&nbsp;Laughter Therapy for&nbsp;Mothers&rsquo; Level of Depression, Anxiety, and Parental Stress during&nbsp;the COVID-19 Pandemic.&#39; The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated significant lifestyle modifications globally, leading to heightened psychological stressors, notably depression and anxiety. Concurrently, the exigencies of parental care have escalated, thereby amplifying the risk of caregiver exhaustion and potential child maltreatment. This study sought to assess the efficacy and feasibility of utilizing distance laughter therapy for mothers who are looking after young children during these challenging times. The primary objective was to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and parental stress.</p>

Nestling begging calls resemble maternal vocal signatures when mothers call slowly to embryos

<p><span>Vocal production learning (the capacity to learn to produce vocalizations) is a multi-dimensional trait that involves different learning mechanisms during different temporal and socio-ecological contexts. A key outstanding question is whether vocal production learning begins during the embryonic stage and whether mothers play an active role in this through pupil-directed vocalization behaviors. We examined variation in vocal copy similarity (an indicator of learning) in eight species from the songbird family Maluridae, using comparative and experimental approaches. We found that: (1) incubating females from all species vocalized inside the nest and produced call types including a signature 'B element' that was structurally similar to their nestlings' begging call; (2) in a prenatal playback experiment using superb fairywrens (<em>Malurus</em> <em>cyaneus</em>), embryos showed a stronger heart rate response to playbacks of the B element than to another call element (A); and (3) </span><span>mothers that produced slower calls had offspring with greater similarity between their begging call and the mother's </span><span>B element vocalization</span><span>. We conclude that malurid mothers display behaviors concordant with pupil-directed vocalizations and may actively influence their offspring's early-life through sound learning shaped by maternal call tempo. </span></p>

Data from: Mother knows best: Nest-site choice homogenizes embryo thermal environments among populations in a widespread ectotherm

<p><span>Species with large geographic ranges provide an excellent model of how different populations respond to dissimilar local conditions, particularly variation in climate. Maternal effects, such as oviposition-site choice greatly affect offspring phenotypes and survival. Thus, maternal behavior has the potential to mitigate the effects of divergent climatic conditions across a species' range. We delineated natural nesting areas of six populations of painted turtles (<em>Chrysemys picta</em>) that span a broad latitudinal range and quantified spatial and temporal variation in nest characteristics. To quantify microhabitats available for females to choose, we also identified sites within the nesting area of each location that were representative of available thermal microhabitats. Across the range females nested non-randomly and targeted microhabitats that generally had less canopy cover and thus higher nest temperatures. Nest microhabitats differed among locations but did not predictably vary with latitude or historic mean air temperature during embryonic development. In conjunction with other studies of these populations, nest-site choice appears to be homogenizing nest environments, buffering embryos from thermally-induced selection, which could stymie evolution of embryonic traits. Thus, although effective at a macroclimatic scale, nest-site choice may be unable to compensate for novel stressors that rapidly increase local temperatures.</span></p>

Mothers in a cooperatively breeding bird increase investment per offspring at the pre-natal stage when they will have more help with post-natal care

<p>In many cooperative societies, including our own, helpers assist with the post-natal care of breeders&rsquo; young and may thereby benefit the post-natal development of offspring. Here, we present evidence of a novel mechanism by which such post-natal helping could also have beneficial effects on pre-natal development: By lightening post-natal maternal workloads, helpers may allow mothers to increase their pre-natal investment per offspring. We present the findings of a decade-long study of cooperatively breeding white-browed sparrow-weaver,&nbsp;<em>Plocepasser mahali</em>, societies. Within each social group, reproduction is monopolized by a dominant breeding pair, and non-breeding helpers assist with nestling feeding. Using a within-mother reaction norm approach to formally identify maternal plasticity, we demonstrate that when mothers have more female helpers, they decrease their own post-natal investment per offspring (feed their nestlings at lower rates) but increase their pre-natal investment per offspring (lay larger eggs, which yield heavier hatchlings). That these plastic maternal responses are predicted by female helper number, and not male helper number, implicates the availability of post-natal helping per se as the likely driver (rather than correlated effects of group size), because female helpers feed nestlings at substantially higher rates than males. We term this novel maternal strategy &ldquo;maternal front-loading&rdquo; and hypothesize that the expected availability of post-natal help either allows or incentivizes helped mothers to focus maternal investment on the pre-natal phase, to which helpers cannot contribute directly. The potential for post-natal helping to promote pre-natal development further complicates attempts to identify and quantify the fitness consequences of helping.</p>
