A small vocal repertoire during the breeding season expresses complex behavioral motivations and individual signature in the Common Coot
<p><b>Backgroun</b><b>d:</b> Although acoustic communication plays an essential role in the social interactions of Rallidae, our knowledge of how Rallidae encode diverse types of information using simple vocalizations is limited. We recorded and examined the vocalizations of a Common Coot (<i>Fulica atra</i>) population during the breeding season to test the hypotheses that 1) different call types can be emitted under different behavioral contexts, and 2) variation in the vocal structure of a single call type may be influenced both by behavioral motivations and individual signature. We measured a total of 61 recordings of 30 adults while noting the behavioral activities in which individuals were engaged. We compared several acoustic parameters of the same call type emitted under different behavioral activities to determine how frequency and temporal parameters changed depending on behavioral motivations and individual differences.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>We found that adult Common Coots had a small vocal repertoire, including 4 types of call, composed of a single syllable that was used during 9 types of behaviors. The 4 calls significantly differed in both frequency and temporal parameters and can be clearly distinguished by discriminant function analysis. Minimum frequency of fundamental frequency (F<sub>0min</sub>) and duration of syllable (T) contributed the most to acoustic divergence between calls. Call <i>a</i> was the most commonly used (in 8 of the 9 behaviors detected), and maximum frequency of fundamental frequency (F<sub>0max</sub>) and interval of syllables (TI) contributed the most to variation in call <i>a</i>. Duration of syllable (T) in a single call <i>a</i> can vary with different behavioral motivations after individual vocal signature being controlled.</p> <p><b>Conclusions:</b> These results demonstrate that several call types of a small repertoire, and a single call with function-related changes in the temporal parameter in Common Coots could potentially indicate various behavioral motivations and individual signature. This study advances our knowledge of how Rallidae use "simple" vocal systems to express diverse motivations and provides new models for future studies on the role of vocalization in avian communication and behavior.</p>
Novel approach to delivering pro-environmental messages significantly shifts norms and motivation, but children are not more effective spokespeople than adults
<p>Three studies provided initial laboratory tests of the effectiveness of a novel form of community-based environmental messaging intended to be deployed on public digital signs. In all studies, adult participants watched a slideshow of "Community Voices," a display that combines community images and quotes to celebrate and empower pro-environmental and pro-community thought and action. In addition to assessing the general efficacy of the approach, a central goal was to assess the impact of alternative messengers by comparing identical text associated with either adult or child messengers (Studies 1, 2, and 3). We also assessed the impact of alternative framing of the message itself by comparing: injunctive vs non-injunctive wording (Study 1), political vs non-political content (Study 1), and future vs. present-oriented framing (Study 2). Studies 1 and 2 were conducted on a national sample. In addition, to assess the impact of local vs. non-local messengers, Study 3 compared the response of a non-local sample to a local population in which subjects had personal connections with the people and places featured in the message content. Exposure to Community Voices messages resulted in significant increases in social norm perception, concern about environmental issues, commitment to action, and optimism, suggesting that this approach to messaging is potentially valuable for stimulating cultural change. However, messages attributed to child messengers were generally not more effective, and in some cases were less effective than the same message attributed to adults. We also found no significant difference in the impact of the alternative message frames studied.</p>
Shared motivations, goals and values in the practice of personal science - Qualitative data set
<p>269 transcribed excerpts coded from 22 interviews to self-researchers for the study "Shared motivations, goals and values in the practice of personal science - A community perspective on self-tracking for empirical knowledge". Interviews with participants were conducted via video conferencing and were based on a list of open-ended questions, separated into key sections around participation and collaboration in personal science. Participants who agreed to be interviewed, gave informed consent in like with the ethics approval by the Inserm Institutional Review Board (IRB) for this study, and regarding this data set, previous agreement in compliance with privacy and anonymity requirements. NOT JUST MOTIVATION, BUT ALSO SELF-REGULATED LEARNING AFFECTED THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF INDONESIAN MEDICAL STUDENTS
<p>Introduction. Medical education is regarded as difficult college degrees and a stressful academic journey. This study aimed to elaborate the correlation between several internal factors that affect academic performance. Methods. 211 active students in UPN Veteran Jakarta Indonesia was filled the four questionnaires to measure SRL (self regulated learning), motivation, self-efficacy, and emotional intelligence. GPA was considered as the academic performance of students. Correlation tests were analysed by Pearson correlation test and multiple linear regression. Results. SRL scores were higher in the medium level than high or low level, on contrast, the other variables showed different trends. The variables showed significant correlation with GPA were SRL and motivation. Conclusion. This study examined several intrinsic factors affected GPA, with predominantly SRL and motivation influencing GPA more. Strengthening the self-efficacy and Emotional Intelligence might improve the academic performance of medical students</p>
Rooting motivation in growing-finishing pigs
<p>Rooting is a strongly motivated, species-specific behaviour of pigs. Most housing systems do not provide appropriate materials that enable the full expression of this behaviour, and it remains unclear whether straw is an appropriate rooting material. We therefore investigated the suitability of small (minimal) and large (deep) amounts of straw as well as large amounts of compost to satisfy rooting motivation in pigs. Fifty-seven growing-finishing pigs were housed in three pens, each providing permanent access to one of the three treatment substrates. Eight pigs per group were tested individually in a conditioned place preference test (CPPT) and another eight pigs in a classical preference test (PT). In the tests, pigs could show their preference to consume freely available food ("feed") or food hidden in sawdust ("root"). In the CPPT, food was only present during training but not during testing. Pigs were exposed to the test situation twice, with approximately 72 kg and 115 kg body weight. In both tests, the following variables were measured and used as outcome variables in linear mixed effect models: first decision to choose one of the two stimuli ("feed" or "root"), duration of time spent in proximity to "root", number of changes between stimuli, and latency to the first decision. Overall, the pigs' first decision (<i>P</i> = 0.076) and the duration in proximity to "root" (<i>P</i> = 0.034) varied among treatments: Pigs housed with minimal straw were more likely to choose "root" first (post hoc comparison; <i>P</i> = 0.090) and spent more time in proximity to "root" (<i>P</i> = 0.030) than pigs housed with compost, whereas pigs housed with deep straw were intermediate. Interestingly, the patterns of response to the treatment differed depending on the behavioural tests for both, first decision (interaction; <i>P</i> = 0.032) and duration in proximity to "root" (interaction; <i>P</i> = 0.006). In addition, pigs in the PT changed more often between stimuli than pigs in the CPPT (<i>P</i> < 0.001). There was an interactive effect between test and treatment for latency to first decision (interaction; <i>P</i> = 0.082), though pairwise comparisons did not reveal any differences. We concluded that in this study housing with permanent access to compost satisfied rooting motivation in pigs more than housing with minimal amounts of straw.</p>
