CH4 isotopic signatures of emissions from oil and gas extraction sites in Romania

<p>Dataset linked to the manuscript &quot;CH4 isotopic signatures of emissions from oil and gas extraction sites in Romania&quot;,&nbsp;submitted to Elementa: Science of the Anthropocene.</p> <p>Abstract:&nbsp;Methane (CH4) emissions to the atmosphere from the oil and gas sector in Romania&nbsp;remain highly uncertain, despite their relevance for the European Union&rsquo;s goals to&nbsp;reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Measurements of the isotopic composition of CH4&nbsp;can be used for source attribution, which is important in top-down studies of emissions&nbsp;from extended areas.&nbsp;We performed isotope measurements of CH4 in atmospheric air samples collected&nbsp;from an aircraft (24 locations) and ground vehicles (83 locations), around oil and gas&nbsp;production sites in Romania, with focus on the Romanian Plain. Ethane to methane&nbsp;ratios (C2:C1) were derived at 412 locations of the same fossil fuel activity clusters.&nbsp;The resulting isotopic signals (&delta;13C and &delta;2H in CH4) covered a wide range of values,&nbsp;indicating mainly thermogenic gas sources (associated with oil production) in the&nbsp;Romanian Plain, mostly in Prahova county (&delta;13C from -67.8 to -22.4 per mille V-PDB;&nbsp;&delta;2H from -255 to -138 per mille V-SMOW) but also the presence of some natural gas&nbsp;reservoirs of microbial origin in Dolj, Ialomia, Prahova and likely Teleorman counties.&nbsp;The classification based on C2:C1 ratios was generally in agreement with the one&nbsp;based on CH4 isotopic composition, and confirmed the characterisation of the gas&nbsp;origin.&nbsp;In several cases, the CH4 enhancements sampled from the aircraft could directly be&nbsp;linked to the underlying production clusters using wind data. The combination of&nbsp;&delta;13C and &delta;2H signals determined on these samples confirm that the oil and gas&nbsp;production sector is the main source of CH4 emissions in the target areas.</p>

The site of an experimental oil spill located at a freshwater wetland along the St. Lawrence River re-visited after 21 years

<p>In 1999 a wetland close to Ste. Croix de Lotibiniere (Quebec, Eastern Canada) and located along the St. Lawrence River was the site of a simulated oil spill. Test plots were set up, contaminated with crude oil and subsequently used to test natural attenuation, nutrient amendment or vegetation cropping as remediation treatments. In 2020, this study revisited the former test plots to investigate any lingering effects of the original Ste. Croix study. Test plot sediments and control sediments featured detectable quantities (75 - 165 g/kg) of mid-chain n-alkanes (C10-C36), but no other kinds of hydrocarbons. Differences in hydrocarbon, total organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous content were not significantly different between test plot sediments and control sediments. A microbial analysis did not detect significant differences in microbial load, microbial diversity or microbial community composition between test plot sediments and control sediments. Key genes for the aerobic and anaerobic degradation of n-alkanes as well as for the aerobic degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were detected in all sediment samples. Abundances of these genes did not differ significantly between formerly oil-contaminated sediments and control sediments. This study shows that after 21 years, previously oil-contaminated sediments of the Ste. Croix wetland can be considered completely remediated irrespective of the performed remediation treatment.</p> <p>In this file archive are included, metadata, metagenome co-assembly, functional and taxonomic annotations, contigs and genes abundance matrices and MAGs files.</p> <p>Raw Illumina sequence data was deposited in the NCBI SRA portal under accession PRJNA818909.</p>

Data from: The shape of aroma: Measuring and modeling citrus oil gland distribution

<p>From preventing scurvy to being part of religious rituals, citrus are intrinsically connected to human health and perception. From tiny mandarins to head-sized pummelos, citrus capability of hybridization provides a vastly diverse array of fruit sizes and shapes, which in turn corresponds to a diversity of flavors and aromas. These sensory qualities are tightly linked to oil glands in the citrus skin. The oil glands are also key to understanding fruit development, and the essential oils contained by them are fundamental in the food and perfume industries. We study the shape of citrus based on 3D X-ray CT scan reconstruction of 163 different citrus samples comprising 58 different species and cultivars, including samples of all fundamental citrus species. First, using the power of X-rays and image processing, we are able to compare and contrast size ratios between different tissues, such as the size of the skin compared to the rind or the flesh. Second, we model the fruit shape as an ellipsoidal surface, and later we study and infer possible oil gland distributions on this surface using principles of directional statistics. We finally compare and contrast these overall fruit shape models along their gland distributions across different citrus species. This morphological modeling will allow us later to link genotype with phenotype, furthering our insight on how the physical shape is genetically specified in DNA.</p>

Exposure and fragility of a virtual oil refinery testbed for seismic risk assessment

<p><span>&Alpha;</span><span> </span><span>virtual mid-size oil refinery, located in a high-seismicity region of Greece, is offered as a testbed for developing and testing system-level assessment methods. The dataset includes (a) a full geolocated exposure model with all pertinent critical assets, namely tanks, pressure vessels, process towers, chimneys, equipment-supporting buildings, and a flare; (b) the corresponding record-wise asset demands and summarized fragilities derived via nonlinear dynamic analyses on reduced-order numerical models.</span></p>

Oil Seed Rape yield analysis using the Light Use Efficiency model in LandKlif project

<p>The crop yield of Oil Seed Rape (OSR) is calculated using the light use efficiency (LUE) model for the state of Bavaria (adopted from Dhillon et al 2020). The yield output is received by inputting the synthetic dataset of Sentinel-2-MODIS with 10-meter spatial and 8-day temporal resolution (generated by Dhillon et al 2022) plus climate elements. The model output is validated using the Landesamt regional crop yield data of Bavaria for 2019 with an R2 of 0.82 and RMSE of 2.14 dt/ha. The NDVI and the yield product was created by Carina K&uuml;bert-Flock, Thorsten Dahms, and Maninder Singh Dhillon from TP 7 in LandKlif project.</p> <p>LandKlif is funded by the <a href="https://www.stmwk.bayern.de/englisch.html"><strong>Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts</strong></a> within the <a href="https://www.bayklif.de/"><strong>Bavarian Climate Research Network (bayklif)</strong></a><strong>.&nbsp;</strong> Within the five year funding period of bayklif, five interdisciplinary senior research associations and five junior research groups are be financed with a total sum of 18 million Euro. <strong>LandKliF</strong>, as one of the five interdisciplinary senior research associations, addresses the effects of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem services in semi-natural, agricultural and urban landscapes.</p>
