Genetic diversity of farmed and wild Rufiji tilapia (Oreochromis urolepis urolepis) populations

Rufiji tilapia (Oreochromis urolepis urolepis) is an endemic cichlid in Tanzania. In addition to its importance for biodiversity conservation, Rufiji tilapia is also attractive for farming due to its high growth-rate, salinity tolerance, and the production of all-male hybrids when crossed with Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The aim of the current study was to assess the genetic diversity and population structure of both wild and farmed Rufiji tilapia populations in order to inform conservation and aquaculture practices.

Evaluating the protective role of Amphora coffeaeformis as a nutraceutical in enhancing growth and health status of Oreochromis niloticus reared at suboptimal temperatures and their resistance to Aeromonas sobria

This 60-day study aimed to examine the efficacy of diets supplemented with Amphora coffeaeformis powder or its extract in enhancing the growth performance, health status, and survival of Oreochromis niloticus under suboptimal temperature conditions (21 °C). One hundred and eighty fish (31.39 ± 0.5 g) were distributed evenly among six groups, each in triplicate. The first group was given a basal diet. The second (AMP50) and third (AMP70) groups were given a diet supplemented with 50 and 70 g/kg of A. coffeaeformis powder, respectively. The fourth (AME50) and fifth (AME70) groups were given a diet supplemented with 50 and 70 g of A. coffeaeformis extract, respectively. The fifth group (OXY) was provided with a diet supplemented with 500 mg of oxytetracycline/kg. The findings indicate that feeding tilapia with 70 g/kg of A. coffeaeformis extract can improve their health and resistance to A. sobria infection when reared at 21 °C.
