COVID-19 pandemic impact on student achievements

We tracked changes in student achievements across the first two years of their engineering studies. Educational data collected from parents - regarding the analysis of online activities in schools in Romania (during the Covid-19 pandemic, March 2020 - April 2020)

<p>The responses of the 784 parents were collected through the questionnaire available at: <a href="https://forms.gle/Km8WE5QamrYYgXJi7" target="_new" rel="noopener"><strong>https://forms.gle/Km8WE5QamrYYgXJi7</strong></a></p> <p>It was designed with various types of responses, including binomial (yes/no), polynomial (multiple options), and open-ended responses, to capture a comprehensive range of data. This combined approach allows for both quantitative analysis of fixed-response questions and qualitative insights from open-ended questions. Patterns, correlations, and differences between various demographic groups and their experiences and attitudes toward online education can be identified.</p> <p>To protect the identity of the respondents and to obtain accurate responses, all data collected from teachers was anonymous. We did not collect any personal information whatsoever. This aspect was made clear to the respondents in the description of the questionnaire.</p>

A mixed-methods study conducted by EURIPA.</span></strong></p> <p><strong><span>Abstract</span></strong></p> <p><strong><span>Background</span></strong></p> <p><span>The role of primary care during a pandemic varies across European countries. The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the working practices of family medicine doctors. It has also impacted the resilience of health systems.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Objectives</span></strong><span> </span></p> <p><span>This study aimed to examine European health system responses to the pandemic, focusing on rural and urban differences.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Material and methods</span></strong></p> <p><span>This cross-sectional, mixed-methods study used a semi-structured online questionnaire with 68 questions, including 21 free-text comments. Data were collected from May 2020 to January 2021. Key informants from sixteen EURIPA member countries distributed questionnaires to 406 primary care doctors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests (Chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U) with a significance threshold of 0.05. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong></p> <p><span>A statistically significant difference was found between rural (36.4%, 55/151), semirural (19.4%, 24/124), and urban populations (29.8%, 39/131) regarding medicine shortages (&chi;&sup2; = 9.91, df = 4, p = 0.042). <span>&nbsp;</span>The semirural one proved to have a statistically significant difference with the other settings(chi-square post-hoc test, p = 0.004 in post-hoc chi-square test). Significant differences were found between countries in resilience features including, Effectiveness of triage, Adapting to the rapidly changing requirements, Government help, Existence of a community resilience group, Improved interprofessional collaboration, Medicine Shortage and GPs involved in palliative care.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusions</span></strong></p> <p><span>Medicine shortage was more prevalent in rural and urban areas compared to semirural ones. Differences were observed between countries in their responses to the pandemic, particularly in Adapting to the rapidly changing requirements, Effectiveness of triage, Government help, Existence of a Community resilience group. Qualitative analysis confirmed these disparities.</span></p> <p><span>The results emphasize the need for tailored approaches considering diverse contexts in shaping effective health system resilience.</span></p>

Reporting uncertified science in the news media during the Covid-19 pandemic

<p>Preprints have established a stable position in the dissemination of scientific findings. This position has been reinforced by the Covid-19 pandemic, which required the rapid dissemination of new scientific information. However, in most cases, preprints have not undergone peer review and, as a consequence, lack the scientific rigor of other scientific publications such as journal articles. This presents a challenge for journalists who are tasked with keeping the public informed about the latest scientific developments in the context of great uncertainty during a global pandemic. Having to report on rapidly changing circumstances under increasing pressure from social media while also having to compete for attention in a saturated media landscape might place strain on the adherence to journalistic norms. This does not only have implications in terms of the case-by-case accuracy of reporting, but on the public perception of science at large.</p> <p>This paper investigates the reporting of scientific information from pre-preprints based on a sample of 2,877&nbsp;online news articles related to Covid-19 in the South African news media. Our results show that despite the publication of guidelines for reporting on preprints in the media, there is still a way to go regarding the judicious use of scientific information from preprints by journalists.</p> <p>The dataset includes the&nbsp;table of the 2,877 online news articles as well as the analysis done (as separate tables).</p> <p>Fields in the dataset: Full Text, Headline, ID, Publication Date, Site Name,URL,Syndicated, Covid-related scientific research findings,<br> Preprint, Title, Authors,DOI, Archive / journal, URL</p>

The CHASING COVID Cohort Study: A national, community-based prospective cohort study of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic outcomes in the USA

<p>The Communities, Households and SARS-CoV-2 Epidemiology (CHASING) COVID Cohort Study is a community-based prospective cohort study launched during the upswing of the USA COVID-19 epidemic. The objectives of the cohort study are to: (1) estimate and evaluate determinants of the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, disease and deaths; (2) assess the impact of the pandemic on psychosocial and economic outcomes and (3) assess the uptake of pandemic mitigation strategies.&nbsp;6740 people are enrolled in the cohort, including participants from all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. Participants are contacted regularly to complete study assessments, including interviews and dried blood spot specimen collection for serologic testing.</p> <p>Datasets are provided in CSV and sas7bdat (with formatting script) file formats.</p>

Face processing in the infant brain after pandemic lockdown

<p>The role of visual experience in the development of face processing has long been debated. We present a new angle on this question through a serendipitous study that cannot easily be repeated. Infants viewed short blocks of faces during fMRI in a repetition suppression task. The same identity was presented multiple times in half of the blocks (Repeat condition) and different identities were presented once each in the other half (Novel condition). In adults, the fusiform face area (FFA) tends to show greater neural activity for Novel vs. Repeat blocks in such designs, suggesting that it can distinguish same vs. different face identities. As part of an ongoing study, we collected data before the COVID-19 pandemic and after an initial local lockdown was lifted. The resulting sample of 12 infants (9–24 months) was divided equally into pre-and post-lockdown groups with matching ages and data quantity/quality. The groups had strikingly different FFA responses: pre-lockdown infants showed repetition suppression (Novel &gt; Repeat), whereas post-lockdown infants showed the opposite (Repeat &gt; Novel), often referred to as repetition enhancement. These findings provide speculative evidence that altered visual experience during the lockdown, or other correlated environmental changes, may have affected face processing in the infant brain.</p>

Changing birth places to care for healthcare workers, lessons from the pandemic: a scoping review.

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><strong>Background:</strong> Together with women giving birth, healthcare professionals involved in perinatal care faced significant challenges due to Covid-19 restrictions. The birth environment has been affected, influencing the quality and nature of interactions between care providers, women, and their families as well as the quality of care provided to women.</p> <p><strong>Aim:</strong> To identify, categorize and reflect on the most relevant aspects of the experience of healthcare workers, especially obstetricians and gynecologists, involved in the peripartum period, after the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic up till now.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> A scoping review was conducted. After conducting a literature search using a variety of online data- bases, 22 articles were included, and the main/recurrent themes were identified.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>The following main themes were described: fear of the virus, changes in the way care is provided, increase in the workload, mental health, psychological distress, support strategies, university education, and perspectives of health managers.</p> <p><strong>Discussion:</strong> Standard maternity departments appeared not appropriate to face the pandemic. Psychological distress on perinatal healthcare workers&rsquo;, the majority of whom were women, led to the impairment of their mental health, affecting the quality of care provided to women.&nbsp; A key role was played by healthcare managers support in shaping how doctors can cope and recover, and in reducing the mental health impact.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> It is very important to address some of the most relevant issues to acknowledge the role of healthcare workers and improve the health systems organization to face future pandemics.</p>

Database research on the performance of Brazilian teachers in the pandemic and the burnout syndrome

<p>The research developed at the Federal University of Santa Catarina aimed to analyze the levels of Burnout Syndrome in teaching activities during the pandemic, seeking to identify factors, conditions and levels of education that could be associated. Burnout Syndrome is associated with professional activity including exhaustion, emotional exhaustion, chronic stress and dehumanization. The research foresees two procedures for data collection. At first, the instrument was built and validated with specialists. The questionnaire applied online included sociodemographic questions and health conditions, as well as personal and institutional conditions for acting as a teacher during the pandemic and includes the adaptation of a standardized instrument on Burnout Syndrome.</p>

Supplementary data of the paper 'Adaptive trends of sequence compositional complexity over pandemic time in the SARS CoV 2 coronavirus'

<p>Supplement of the paper<br> &quot;Adaptive trends of sequence compositional complexity over pandemic time in the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus&rdquo;<br> During the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus underwent mutation and recombination events that altered its genome compositional structure, thus providing an unprecedented opportunity to check an evolutionary process in real time. The mutation rate is known to be lower than expected for neutral evolution, suggesting natural selection and convergent evolution. We begin by summarizing the compositional heterogeneity of each viral genome by computing its Sequence Compositional Complexity (SCC). To analyze the full range of SCC diversity, we select random samples of high quality coronavirus genomes covering the full span of the pandemic. We then search for evolutionary trends that could inform us on the adaptive process of the virus to its human host by computing the phylogenetic ridge regression of SCC against time (i.e., the collection date of each viral isolate). In early samples, we find no statistical support for any trend in SCC values, although the viral genome appears to evolve faster than Brownian Motion (BM) expectation. However, in samples taken after the emergence of high fitness variants, and despite the brief time span elapsed, a driven decreasing trend for SCC and an increasing one for its absolute evolutionary rate are detected, pointing to a role for selection in the evolution of SCC in the coronavirus.
