L'appel de la Patrie: les réservistes et les volontaires français du Chili pendant la Première Guerre mondiale
<p>Ce travail analyse le départ des réservistes et des volontaires français résidant au Chili qui, en août 1914, au tout début de la Première Guerre mondiale, partirent se battre sur le front européen. On y observe comment, dans ce pays sud-américain, les autorités françaises prennent le contrôle des associations de la colonie et organisent le recrutement et l’arrière-garde civile. Nous considérons que, dans le contexte chilien de l’époque, l’identité européenne est de première importance puisqu’elle justifie le départ d’un nombre important de membres de la colonie française qui décident de s’engager dans un conflit situé à des milliers de kilomètres de leur lieu de résidence.</p> <p>---</p> <p>This work analyzes the departure of the French reservists and volunteers residing in Chile who marched to fight on the European front at the beginning of the First World War in August 1914. We look at how the French authorities in the Latin American country took control of the colony’s associations and organized the recruitment and the rearguard in Chilean territory. We consider the importance of European identity as relevant in the Chilean context of the era, since a significant number of members of the French colony decided to go to a battlefield that lay thousands of miles away.</p>

Understanding the Buoy Effect of Surface-Enriched Pt Complexes in Ionic Liquids: A Combined ARXPS and Pendant Drop Study**, DOI: 10.1002/cphc.202300612
<p>Recently, we demonstrated that Pt catalyst complexes dissolved in the ionic liquid (IL) [C<sub>4</sub>C<sub>1</sub>Im][PF<sub>6</sub>] can be deliberately enriched at the IL surface by introducing perfluorinated substituents, which act like buoys dragging the metal complex towards the surface. Herein, we extend our previous angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) studies at complex concentrations between 30 and 5 %<sub>mol</sub> down to 1 %<sub>mol</sub> and present complementary surface tension pendant drop (PD) measurements under ultraclean vacuum conditions. This combination allows for connecting the microscopic information on the IL/gas interface derived from ARXPS with the macroscopic property surface tension. The surface enrichment of the Pt complexes is found to be most pronounced at 1 %<sub>mol</sub>. It also displays a strong temperature dependence, which was not observed for 5 %<sub>mol</sub> and above, where the surface is already saturated with the complex. The surface enrichment deduced from ARXPS is also reflected by the pronounced decrease in surface tension with increasing concentration of the catalyst. We furthermore observe by ARXPS and PD a much stronger surface affinity of the buoy-complex as compared to the free ligands in solution. Our results are highly interesting for an optimum design of IL-based catalyst systems with large contact areas to the surrounding reactant/product phase, such as in supported IL phase (SILP) catalysis.</p>

Carved bone pendant, Sanak Island, Alaska. Cat# XFP-031-50-1. XFP-031 is a group of house depressions on the north shore of Sanak Island, Alaska. Multiple radiocarbon dates place it from 350 BCE to 100 BCE, placing it in the Adamagan Phase of the Alaska Peninsula. These artifacts were scanned with either a Faro Edge Arm or a Minolta 9i. Processed in Geomagic or Polyworks. 4-8 photos were used for texture in ZBrush. Ces résultats ont été obtenus à partir de la diffusion d'un questionnaire qui à permis d'obtenir 1148 réponses. Ce questionnaire a été diffusé entre mai et juin 2021 aux enseignants de l’académie d’Aix Marseille en vue de comprendre comment ils ont utilisés les outils numériques dans leur travail notamment à distance .</p>
