Out-of-plane ferroelectricity and robust magnetoelectricity in quasi two-dimensional materials

Thin film ferroelectrics have been pursued for capacitive and nonvolatile memory devices. They rely on polarizations that are oriented in an out-of-plane direction to facilitate integration and addressability with CMOS architectures. The internal depolarization field, however, formed by surface charges can suppress the out-of-plane polarization in ultrathin ferroelectric films that could otherwise exhibit lower coercive fields and operate with lower power. Here we unveil stabilization of a polar longitudinal optical (LO) mode in the n=2 Ruddlesden–Popper family that produces out-of-plane ferroelectricity, persists under open-circuit boundary conditions, and is distinct from hyperferroelectricity. Our first-principles calculations show the stabilization of the LO mode is ubiquitous in chalcogenides and halides and relies on anharmonic trilinear mode coupling. We further show that the out-of-plane ferroelectricity can be predicted with a crystallographic tolerance factor, and we use these insights to design a room-temperature multiferroic with strong magnetoelectric coupling suitable for magneto-electric spin-orbit transistors.

Plane wave ultrasound and OCT angiography of the eye in preeclampsia

This study involves examination of ocular blood flow in human subjects in preeclampsia (PE). Both eyes were examined by plane-wave ultrasound and by optical coherence angiography (OCTA) within 72 hours of delivery. Ultrasound Doppler was used to assess flow velocity and resistance in the central retinal artery and vein, the short posterior ciliary arteries and the choroid. OCTA was used to assess vascular density in the superficial and deep retina and the choriocapillaris. Analysis included correlation with blood pressure, assessment of differences between normal and PE and correlation of ultrasound Doppler with OCTA vascular density.

WWI Plane for Game Art

An airplane we had to do for our Game Art course, I'm not happy with the texture but it's the best I could do after multiple tries. I also couldn't load a second texture, which was needed for the parts that weren't mirrored. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

First Dataset of electron vortex beams observed in the fraunhofer plane of the chopstic/MINEON device - CL205m

Franhofer diffraction dataset of electron vortex beams (EVBs) generated by the chopstic/MINEON device observed with a Camera Length of 205m on the K2 camera of the Titan Holo present in the Ernst-Ruska Centre at FZ-Julich. In this dataset, which can be accessed through Digital Micrograph and STEM_Cell it is possible to observe how by changing the potential difference between the two tips (main electrodes of the device) the radius of the EVB increases. A striking feature is that the radius increases almost linearly with the Orbital Angular Momentum. The analisys of this dataset can be found.at https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.00477

COVID-19 Plane Infection Risks

Cross-sectional survey results from a COVID19 plane infection risk survey conducted between the 22nd to 23rd October, 2020. Participants (n = 2103) were aged 18 years or older, were living in the UK and had undertaken foreign air travel. The survey consisted of 18 closed-ended questions, with seventeen of the questions addressing issues associated with travelling by air and 11 questions addressing specific demographic topics. The questionnaire was designed by the research team, consisting of environmental microbiologists, public health specialists and social scientists, based on the study objectives and incorporating information from previous studies on same topic. The draft questionnaire was then tested on an expert panel, a panel of non-experts, a local ethics committee. First, perceived risks, concerns, and subjective knowledge of COVID-19 symptoms were measured using 16 options that included 14 actual symptoms and 2 which were not. Other questions about perception and risk were measured by statements with a 5-point Likert scale (e.g. strongly disagree to strongly agree).

Experimental data: Low-velocity out-of-plane impact tests on double-wythe unreinforced brick masonry walls instrumented with optical measurements

This dataset includes the results of laboratory impact tests conducted on natural-scale double-wythe unreinforced brick masonry walls. The walls were spanning vertically between two reinforced concrete slabs and were subjected to low-velocity drop-weight pendulum tests in which they were repeatedly hit until the opening of a breach in the center of the wall. The tests were instrumented with both hard-wired and optical measurements, the latter consisting of high-speed cameras and digital image correlation techniques. Investigated in these tests were the out-of-plane response of the walls and their capacity to resist the impacts. The axial load applied on the top of the walls was varied for two wall configurations and monitored throughout the tests to study the effect of arching on the failure mechanism produced and number of repeated hits needed to open the breach. Of interest was also the evidence of cracking, more specifically the way it initiated on the undamaged walls and next propagated upon consecutive hits.

The data generated from the tests is made here available and documented to support further investigations on masonry structures subjected to extreme actions. The dataset includes four ZIP files, ordered from 01 to 05, along with an auxiliary PDF document describing the content and organization of the data.

Test implementation and test results that are built upon this data are presented and discussed in the following research article:

Godio M, Flansbjer M, Williams Portal N (2023) Low-velocity out-of-plane impact tests on double-wythe unreinforced brick masonry walls instrumented with optical measurements, International Journal of Impact Engineering

To cite this data in your work please refer to the article.

The Authors
