Strong evidence for positive and negative correlational selection revealed by recreating ancestral variation

<p>The study of adaptation helps explain biodiversity and predict future evolution. Yet the process of adaptation can be difficult to observe due to limited phenotypic variation in contemporary populations. Furthermore, the scarcity of male fitness estimates has made it difficult to both understand adaptation and evaluate sexual conflict hypotheses. We addressed both issues in our study of two anther position traits in wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum): anther exsertion (long filament − corolla tube lengths) and anther separation (long − short filament lengths). These traits affect pollination efficiency and are particularly interesting due to the unusually high correlations among their component traits. We measured selection through male and female fitness on wild radish plants from populations artificially selected to recreate ancestral variation in each anther trait. We found little evidence for conflicts between male and female function. We found strong evidence for stabilizing selection on anther exsertion and disruptive selection on anther separation, indicating positive and negative correlational selection on the component traits. Intermediate levels of exsertion are likely an adaptation to best contact small bees. The function of anther separation is less clear, but future studies might investigate pollen placement on pollinators and compare species possessing multiple stamen types.</p>

Rain, recreation, and risk: Human activity and ecological disturbance create seasonal risk landscapes for the prey of an ambush predator

<p>Predation risk and prey responses exhibit fluctuations in space and time. Seasonal ecological disturbances can alter landscape structure and permeability to influence predator activity and efficacy, creating predictable patterns of risk for prey (seasonal risk landscapes). This may create corresponding seasonal shifts in antipredator behavior, mediated by species ecology and trade-offs between risk and resources. Yet, how human recreation interacts with seasonal risk landscapes and antipredator behavior remains understudied.</p> <p><strong>Goals</strong> – In South Florida, we investigated the impact of a seasonal ecological disturbance, specifically flooding, which is inversely related to human activity, on interactions between Florida panthers (<em>Puma concolor coryi</em>) and white-tailed deer (<em>Odocoileus</em> <em>virginianus</em>). We hypothesized that human activity and ecological disturbances would interact with panther-deer ecology, resulting in the emergence of two distinct seasonal landscapes of predation risk and the corresponding antipredator response. We conducted camera trap surveys across southwestern Florida to collect detection data on humans, panthers, and deer. We analyzed the influence of human site use and flooding on deer and panther detection probability, co-occurrence, and diel activity during the flooded and dry seasons. Flooding led to decreased panther detections and increased deer detections, resulting in reduced deer-panther co-occurrence during the flooded season. Panthers exhibited increased nocturnality and reduced diel activity overlap with deer in areas with higher human activity. Supporting our hypothesis, panthers' avoidance of human recreation and flooding created distinct risk schedules for deer, driving their antipredator behavior. Deer utilized flooded areas to spatially offset predation risk during the flooded season while increasing diurnal activity in response to human recreation during the dry season.</p> <p><strong>Significance to the field </strong>– We highlight the importance of understanding how competing risks and ecological disturbances influence predator and prey behavior, leading to the generation of seasonal risk landscapes and antipredator responses. We emphasize the role of cyclical ecological disturbances in shaping dynamic predator-prey interactions. Furthermore, we highlight how human recreation may function as a 'temporal human shield,' altering seasonal risk landscapes and antipredator responses to reduce encounter rates between predators and prey. </p>

The application of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys and GIS to the analysis and monitoring of recreational trail conditions - dataset

<p>This dataset contains data used to test the protocol for high-resolution mapping and monitoring of recreational impacts in protected natural areas (PNAs) using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveys, Structure-from-Motion (SfM) data processing and geographic information systems (GIS) analysis to derive spatially coherent information about trail conditions (Tomczyk et al., 2023). Dataset includes the following folders:</p> <ol> <li>Cocora_raster_data (~3GB) and Vinicunca_raster_data (~32GB) - a very high-resolution (cm-scale) dataset derived from UAV-generated images. Data covers selected recreational trails in Colombia (Valle de Cocora) and Peru (Vinicunca). UAV-captured images were processed using the structure-from-motion approach in Agisoft Metashape software. Data are available as GeoTIFF files in the UTM projected coordinate system (UTM 18N for Colombia, UTM 19S for Peru). Individual files are named as follows [location]_[year]_[product]_[raster cell size].tif, where: <ul> <li>[location] is the place of data collection (e.g., Cocora, Vinicucna)</li> <li>[year] is the year of data collection (e.g., 2023)</li> <li>[product] is the tape of files: DEM = digital elevation model; ortho = orthomosaic; hs = hillshade</li> <li>[raster cell size] is the dimension of individual raster cell in mm (e.g., 15mm)</li> </ul> </li> <li> <p>Cocora_vector_data. and Vinicunca_vector_data &ndash; mapping of trail tread and conditions in GIS environment (ArcPro).
