LAGOS-NE Annual, seasonal, and monthly climate data for lakes and watersheds in a 17-state region of the U.S.

These data describe climate at different temporal scales and can easily be integrated into analyses using limnological and geospatial data in the LAGOS-NE database. This includes 1) monthly, seasonal and annual PRISM temperature and precipitation data at the hydrologic unit code-12 (HUC-12) watershed scale, 2) monthly, seasonal and annual Palmer Hydrological Drought Index (PHDI) data for all lakes over 4ha in LAGOS-NE by lagoslakeid (unique lake identifier), and 3) 30-year averages (1981-2010) of monthly, seasonal and annual PRISM temperature and precipitation data at the HUC-12 watershed scale linked to all lakes over 4ha in LAGOS-NE by lagoslakeid.

Data from: Climate connectivity of the bobcat in the Great Lakes region

<p>The Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River are imposing barriers for wildlife and the additive effect of urban and agricultural development that dominates the lower Great Lakes region likely further reduces functional connectivity for many terrestrial species. As the climate warms species will need to track climate across these barriers. It is important, therefore, to investigate land cover and bioclimatic hypotheses that may explain the northward expansion of species through the Great Lakes. We investigated the functional connectivity of a vagile generalist, the bobcat, as a representative generalist forest species common to the region. We genotyped tissue samples collected across the region at 14 microsatellite loci and compared different landscape hypotheses that might explain the observed gene flow or functional connectivity. We found that the Great Lakes and the additive influence of forest stands with either low or high canopy cover and deep lake-effect snow have disrupted gene flow, whereas intermediate forest cover has facilitated gene flow. Functional connectivity in southern Ontario is relatively low and was limited in part by the low amount of forest cover. Pathways across the Great Lakes were through the Niagara region and through the Lower Peninsula of Michigan over the Straits of Mackinac and the St. Mary's River. These pathways are important routes for bobcat range expansion north of the Great Lakes and are also likely pathways that many other mobile habitat generalists must navigate to track the changing climate. The extent to which species can navigate these routes will be important for determining the future biodiversity of areas north of the Great Lakes.</p>

Leaf margins in a deciduous lineage from the Greater Cape Floristic Region track climate in unexpected directions

<p>Premise of the study: The functional significance of leaf margins has long been debated. In this study we explore influences of climate, leaf lobing, woodiness, and shared evolutionary history on two leaf margin traits within the genus Pelargonium.</p> <p>Methods: Leaves from 454 populations of Pelargonium (161 species) were collected in the Greater Cape Floristic Region and scored for tooth presence/absence and degree of lobing. Tooth density (number of teeth per interior perimeter distance) was measured for a subset of these. We compared five hypotheses to explain tooth presence and density using mixed effect models.</p> <p>Key results: Tooth presence/absence was best predicted by the interaction of leaf lobing and mean annual temperature (MAT), but often in patterns opposite to the previous literature: species were more likely to be toothed with warmer temperatures. This was particularly the case for unlobed and highly lobed leaves. In contrast, tooth density was best predicted by the interaction of MAT and the season of most rain; density declines with temperature as consistent with expectations, but only in winter- rain dominated areas. Woody and non-woody species within Pelargonium both have similar associations between tooth presence/absence and MAT, contrary to the expectation that patterns within non-woody species would be insignificant.</p> <p>Conclusions: We conclude Pelargonium leaf margins show predictable responses to climate, but these responses are complex and can contradict those found for global patterns across plant communities.</p>

Data from: Local neighbourhood and regional climatic contexts interact to explain tree performance

Tree neighbourhood modelling has significantly contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms structuring communities. Investigations into the impact of neighbouring crowding on tree performance have generally been conducted at local scales, missing important regional-scale context such as the suitability of the climate for each species. Favourable climates may enhance tree performance, but this may come at the cost of increased neighbourhood crowding and competition negatively impacting survival and growth. Through the synthesis of continental-scale forest inventory and trait datasets from the northeast USA and Puerto Rico we present an analytical approach that elucidates the important interactions between local competitive and regional climatic contexts. Our results show strong asymmetries in competitive interactions and significant niche differences that are dependent on habitat suitability. The strong interaction between local neighbourhood and regional climate highlights the need for models that consider the interaction between these two processes that have been previously ignored.

Spin-up time and internal variability analysis for overlapping time slices in a regional climate model

<p>In order to increase computational efficiency, several long-term regional climate simulations were split into overlappings time slices. These overlappings slices were used to explore the relative role of spin-up time and internal variability in the discontinuities that are produced once the slices are joined.</p> <p>This dataset was generated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and includes two sets of time slices for the periods 2002-2006 and 2006-2010 over the CORDEX South American domain at 0.44&ordm; horizontal resolution (SAM-44), regular on a rotated latitude-longitude projection. The data was forced by the scenario RCP 8.5 and driven by the Canadian Earth System model (CanESM2). The model configuration files are also attached.</p>

Bukovsky, Jing Gao, Linda O. Mearns, and Brian C. O'Neill. This dataset contains data not otherwise available in other public archives, as noted in Bukovsky et al. (2021, Earth's Future; preprint available at https://doi.org/10.1002/essoar.10504141.2). That is, this dataset contains data from the land-use change simulations that are not part of NA-CORDEX (na-cordex.org), but which are complementary to those published in the NA-CORDEX archive.</p>
