Seismicity datasets of the 2022 seismic unrest at the North Mid-Atlantic Ridge

<p>These datasets contain information on the seismicity during the 2022 seismic unrest at the North Mid Atlantic Ridge. Subglacial valleys and ridges of Highland A, East Antarctica

<p>This dataset contains 3 GIS shapefiles which delineate a landscape buried beneath the ice in East Antarctica. The files are: PlateauBoundaries (a polygon shapefile outlining the extent of 3 blocks of ancient land surface), RADARSATRidges (a line shapefile delineating inferred mountain ridgelines inside each block of ancient landsurface), and RADARSATValleys (a line shapefile delineating inferred valley thalwegs inside each block of ancient landsurface). The landscape was mapped from RADARSAT satellite data of the surface of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. This dataset links to a 2023 paper by the same authors entitled &#39;An ancient river landscape preserved beneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet&#39;.</p>

History of Acid Precipitation on the Shawangunk Ridge: Mohonk Preserve Precipitation Depths and pH, 1976 to Present

We, the staff, volunteers and associates of the Mohonk Preserve, have been collecting precipitation data at Mohonk Lake since January 1976. The Level1_MohonkPrecipData includes precipitation depths recorded either during or at the conclusion of every precipitation event. This dataset additionally includes pH measurements for most precipitation collections.The Level2_MohonkPrecipData summarizes data collections into precipitation events where the precipitation depth is cumulative and the pH is averaged for all data collections in that event. We measured precipitation via a National Weather Service Rain Gauge and the pH was measured at a Cooperative Weather Service Station at Mohonk Lake.

Late-Holocene paleofloods in the Upper Little Tennessee River valley, Southern Blue Ridge Mountains, USA.

We derive a paleoflood chronology for the past 2000 years from three stratigraphic sections of overbank sediments with dates from radiocarbon, luminescence, 137Cs techniques, and historical records. Particle sizes were measured in 6-15 year intervals in post-1870 sediments and in 45-170 year intervals in pre-1870 sediments using an automatic laser analyzer. The sedimentological characteristics of ad 1948-2009 deposits were compared with gaging records, demonstrating that fine sand content and sorting discern time intervals of large floods, but flood magnitudes are not well resolved. This modern analog was applied to pre-1870 sediments and revealed two periods in the last 2000 years with large floods during AD 650-850 and AD 1100-1350, which are times when the regional tree-ring record showed extreme wetness and no severe or extreme droughts. Our findings indicate flood-prone phases of transitional climate at the beginning and end of the "Medieval Warm Period" (MWP), and relatively subdued flooding during the "Little Ice Age" (LIA), possibly correlated with rearrangement of macro-scale atmospheric circulation patterns between the MWP and the LIA. Lowering of the snowpack surface by ablation (melt) was measured on a bimonthly basis within couloirs above the Green Lakes and Isabelle Valleys during the summer months. One-inch diameter PVC poles were driven into the snowpack to form vertical transects within each couloir. The height difference (cm) between the top of each pole and the snow surface was recorded. On the subsequent visit the new height difference was recorded and the pole driven into the snow and the reset height was recorded. Poles in a given transect were relocated as necessary during the course of the season.

Couloir air temperature and precipitation data for Niwot Ridge and Kiowa Peak, 1992 - 1993.

Air temperature and precipitation were measured on a biweekly basis, during the summer months, within couloirs above the Green Lakes and Isabelle Valleys. Tru-Chek wedge shaped rain gauges were mounted on the south side of wooden stakes so that the orifice was approximately 52 cm above the surface. The water depth (mm) in the gauge was recorded. On subsequent visits the new water depth was recorded and the reset water depth was recorded. Gauges contained 3-4 mm of oil to retard evaporation, and were emptied (reset) when water depth exceeded 50 mm or when insect accumulations exceeded 10 mm. Taylor Instruments Min-Max thermometers were mounted approximately 50 cm above ground on the north side of the same stakes, sheltered by tin and plastic shields. The current time, current temperature, maximum and minimum air temperature were recorded. Minimum and maximum air temperature markers were reset to the current temperature. Proximity to the surface and inadequate shielding resulted in anomalously high temperature readings, particularly on sunny days.

Krummholz island size, soil inorganic, and organic property data for Saddle, S slope of Niwot Ridge, 1994.

Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) tree islands modify the characteristics of surface soils in alpine tundra. Soil C content of the approximate A horizon (top 15 cm) of soil was measured during the summer of 1994 on windward, leeward, upslope and downslope sides, and interiors of tree islands on Niwot Ridge, Colorado, USA. A subset of samples from these sites were also used for CHN analysis and were measured for total phosphorus using persulfate digestions and colorimetric measurements. Results indicate significant (p<.0001) reductions of percent of dry mass represented by C in soil and significant (p<.04) declines in absolute C storage among soils on the windward sides of tree islands as compared to the upslope and downslope controls, and a tendency for reduced C on the leeward sides as well. Surface organic matter (O horizon) accumulations averaging 9.6 +/- 1.02 kg/m^2 are found in the interior of tree islands, but this material, in addition to roots, is not stabilized in the A horizons of soil. The movement of tree islands can therefore be regarded as disturbances to soil building processes in alpine tundra. Timberline forest and adjacent tundra patches of similar aspect and slope were also sampled for comparisons of soil C content. Results indicated similar C storage beneath trees and tundra at this lower elevation. The wind-induced movement of tree islands across the tundra creates enhanced snowpack within the trees and on their leeward sides. Shading and moisture conditions of the soil are altered, leading to C deposition and decomposition dynamics which differ from that of unimpacted tundra surface soils. However, at timberline, adjacent tundra lacks the ability to exhibit the enhanced C storage of alpine tundra at higher elevations. Snowpack within trees and adjacent tundra at timberline may be relatively constant such that biophysical factors affecting soil characteristics are relatively unchanged by plant life-form.

Individual and community flowering phenology, seed counts and pollinator visitation rates in shrub and open plots across Niwot Ridge, 2019 - 2021.

Climate-change induced alterations in environmental conditions in the alpine tundra has led to the expansion of woody shrubs, known as “shrubification.” Shrubification is thought to change microclimatic conditions, potentially leading to changes in plant community composition. Shrubification has been taking place at Niwot Ridge, a Long Term Ecological Research site nestled in the mountains of Colorado, for the past 40 years. Thus far, Niwot Ridge has seen some change in alpine plant communities due to shrubification, and changes in plant reproductive capacity and success could lead to future alterations of community composition. One important aspect in plant reproductive success is the timing of flowering, known as flowering phenology. Flowering phenology is controlled partially by environmental conditions, and thus is somewhat plastic for many species. In the first part of my thesis, I explore how shrubification may be causing changes in flowering phenology for 21 different plant species in the alpine tundra community at Niwot Ridge. I conducted an observational study over three years, monitoring the number of flowers present in 54 pairs of shrub-influenced and open plots, totaling 108 plots. I found that there is no difference in the flowering phenology between open and shrub-influenced plots. There is a measurable difference in the number of flowers produced between shrub and open plots, with open plots having more flowers on average, This difference is likely due to there being fewer plants in shrub-influenced plots. A second aspect explores shrub effects on the reproductive success of five different alpine species. In the field season of 2021, I took seeds from these five species from 12 pairs of shrub and open plots, totaling 24 plots. I counted and weighed the seeds to determine reproductive success; there was no difference in reproductive success between shrub and open plots.

Alpine plant seed microbiomes, germination, and plant-soil feedbacks, Niwot Ridge and Green Lakes Valley, 2018.

Seed and soil microbiomes strongly affect plant performance, and these effects can scale-up to influence plant community structure. However, seed and soil microbial community composition are variable across landscapes, and different microbial communities can differentially influence multiple plant metrics (biomass, germination rate), and community stabilizing mechanisms. We measured how microbiomes inside seeds and in soils varied among alpine plant species and communities that differed in plant species richness and density. Across 10 common alpine plant species, we found a total of 318 bacterial and 128 fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) associated with seeds, with fungal richness affected by plant species identity more than sampling location. However, seed microbes had only marginally significant effects on plant germination success and timing. In contrast, soil microbes associated with two different plant species had significant effects on plant biomass, and their effect depended both on the plant species and the location the soils were sampled from.

ReESH_US-NR3: Niwot Ridge Alpine (T-Van West)

This data package contains metadata for, and links to the Regional Ecosystem Soil Hydraulic (ReESH) sampling at US-NR3 (Tvan West). The Regional Ecosystem Soil Hydraulic (ReESH) project expands the representation of soil water potential data for both the AmeriFlux and wider flux community. This dataset contains the summary of the soil hydraulic characteristics that were measured including soil texture and water retention curves, which enable the conversion of soil water content to soil water potential. Saddle snowfence grid points, Niwot Ridge LTER, Colorado

Point coverage of Saddle snow fence point grid. 1:500 scale. The Saddle snow fence is a 60-meter long, 2.6-meter high fence erected annually in the fall for manipulating winter snowpack and snow drift along a topoedaphic gradient. The fence was first installed in fall of 1993 and is taken down every summer to avoid influencing summer ambient wind. The fence is oriented along a north-south axis, as prevailing winds on Niwot Ridge come from the west, and delineates shrub and moist meadow communities on the windward (west) side and dry meadow communities on the leeward (east) side. The snowfence grid exists within a 60m x 125m area that contains the snowfence. Of the 146 points in the snowfence grid dataset, 84 are located on the leeward (east) side of the snowfence, 56 are located on the windward (west) side of the snowfence, and 6 are control locations outside of but near the snowfence experiment area. See Fig. 4 in Walker et al. (1999) for graphical depiction of the Saddle snow fence grid, snow fence, and vegetation communities within. Snow depth is measured annually at the snow fence grid points, and the grid has been used for locating experimental plots and instrumentation (e.g. see Walker et al. 1993b, Brooks et al. 1995, Walker et al. 1999). This dataset is part of the Saddle grid geographic information system (GIS). Additional information concerning the Niwot Ridge LTER hierarchical GIS can be found in Walker et al. (1993a).

Snow horizon chemistry data for Niwot Ridge and Green Lakes Valley, 1993 - ongoing.

Snow pits were excavated at various locations on Niwot Ridge and within the Green Lakes Valley. Temperature and snow density were measured at various depths throughout the snow cover profiles in order to characterize the temperature and snow water equivalent (SWE) of the snowpack throughout the year. Snow density was measured at 10-cm intervals using a 1000-ml cutter. Data on snow grain qualities were collected beginning in the 1994-95 snow season. Snow samples were collected and analyzed for cations and anions at the Mountain Research Station's Arikaree (formerly Kiowa) Laboratory.
