A neurocognitive approach to prevent non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injury in football: A scoping review

<p><em>Background - </em>Non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injuries (NC-ACLI) are becoming more common in football due to the involvement of actions such as cutting, landing, pivoting, changing directions, and jumping that expose the knee to angular stresses, rotational motions, and anterior translation force. These risk factors are addressed in the current injury prevention programs(IPP) but have shown to be less effective in further lowering NC-ACLI risk. The missing piece in these IPPs is their inability to target neurocognitive risk factors when a relationship between cognitive competencies and the mechanism of NC-ACLI is evidenced. This gap serves as the basis for the review.</p> <p><em>Purpose – </em>To map the literature that has investigated the application of neurocognitive training (NCT) for the prevention of NC-ACLI in footballers.</p> <p><em>Study Design – </em>Scoping Review</p> <p><em>Methods – </em>A broad eligibility criteria was applied through population, concept, and context framework. Restrictions were applied to language (English) and age (&gt;11 years), as the incidence rises with age. 39 databases and 4 websites were searched for literature until August 12, 2023. Four studies were included after screening the 144 studies found.  Each study underwent quality assessment. The data was extracted and synthesised using data chart.</p> <p><em>Results – </em>The reviewed studies provided comprehensive details on components of NCT with methods and provider of intervention, outcome of NCT application and the cognitive skills targeted, along with the theoretical explanations for their outcomes. The limited number of included studies despite broad eligibility criteria, indicates the emerging nature of research in this domain, corroborated by recent publication dates of included literature.</p> <p><em>Conclusion – </em>This review provides baseline information on NCT in the prevention of NC-ACLI in football and attempts to guide future research.</p>

Exploring Immersive Virtual Reality in Higher Education: Research Gap and future Direction - A Scoping review

<p><span>The rapid advancement of technology in the post-COVID-19 era has positioned immersive learning as a transformative approach to enhance educational experiences. Despite its vast potential, recent research developments reveal persistent challenges and gaps that impede widespread adoption. This study conducts a scoping review using the PRISMA methodology to systematically analyze current literature, identify research gaps, seek the challenge, and propose future research directions. From an initial pool of 414 papers, 75 were selected, comprising 60 research studies and 15 review papers. Notably, 55 studies focus on immersive virtual reality (IVR) purely for educational enhancement in traditional academic settings, while 20 explore the implementation of IVR in education with gaming activities. The analysis indicates a predominance of mixed-methods research within education, computer engineering, and computer science. Most studies are limited by short durations (typically 30 minutes) and small participant groups (under 50), raising concerns about the generalizability of findings. Key themes identified include learning context (21 papers), learning design strategies (10 papers), and immersion elements such as avatars and haptic feedback (6 papers). While positive impacts like increased satisfaction, motivation, engagement, knowledge enhancement, and usability are reported, negative effects such as motion sickness (13 papers) and dizziness (11 papers) persist. Crucially, only 11 studies exhibit high statistical power, underscoring the need for more robust research designs. Challenges identified encompass participant limitations, homogeneity, user discomfort, hardware unfamiliarity, and cognitive load&mdash;all intricately linked to design strategies. The implications of this review highlight the necessity for future research to focus on long-term studies, optimize user experience, develop cost-effective content creation methods, and integrate gamification into learning design. Addressing these areas is essential for overcoming current barriers and fully realizing the potential of immersive learning in education.</span></p>

Portable ultrasound technologies for estimating gestational age in pregnant women: A scoping review and analysis of commercially available models

<p><strong>Objectives</strong>: To identify all available studies assessing the use of portable ultrasound devices for pregnant women, with the specific aim of finding evidence for devices used to determine gestational age and their validity when compared to conventional ultrasound machines. We also wanted to determine what portable ultrasound models are commercially available for obstetric use. </p> <p><strong>Design</strong>: Systematic scoping review</p> <p><strong>Primary and secondary outcome measures:</strong> Extracted variables included study design, population, method of ultrasound measurement, devices used and whether studies formally validated accuracy against conventional ultrasound</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: We searched four databases – Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and Maternal and Infant Care. In total, 56 studies from 34 countries were identified; most were observational studies. Across all studies, 27 different portable ultrasound models (from 17 manufacturers) were evaluated. Twenty-one studies assessed use of portable ultrasound for evaluating fetal characteristics or estimating gestational age, and 10 of these were formal validation studies. In total, six portable devices have been validated for gestational age estimation against a conventional ultrasound comparator. The web searches identified 102 portable devices (21 manufacturers). These were a mix of handheld devices that connected to a phone or computer, or laptop-style portable ultrasound devices. Prices ranged from $1,190 to $30,000 USD and weight ranged from 0.9 kg to 13.0 kg.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong>: While the number of commercially available portable ultrasound devices continues to grow, there remains a lack of peer-reviewed, quality evidence demonstrating their accuracy and validity when compared to conventional ultrasound machines. This review identified some models that may be useful in gestational age estimation in low-resource settings, but more research is required to help implement the technology at scale.</p>

A scoping review of healthcare professionals' views on intimate partner violence in the Middle East and North Africa

<p><strong>Objectives</strong></p> <p>This scoping review aims to survey healthcare providers (HCPs) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) about their knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to working with women who have experienced Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). This review aims to map the breadth of available peer-reviewed literature that may inform future educational training programs.</p> <p><strong>Design</strong></p> <p>Scoping review.</p> <p><strong>Data Sources</strong></p> <p>The scoping review included studies up to December 2023 from PUBMED, Medline, COCHRANE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Arabic medical journals. </p> <p><strong>Eligibility Criteria</strong></p> <p>Selected articles were restricted to those carried out in the MENA region, available in full-text, and with no date restrictions. Data Extraction and Synthesis Data was extracted from all studies to include research location, year of publication, type of journal, methodology, design, participants, knowledge, attitudes, and barriers. By charting the information into a table, the data was analysed using frequency and counts and descriptive content analysis. </p> <p><strong>Results</strong></p> <p>Of the 1066 articles reviewed, 29 eligible studies were included in this scoping review. 27% of the articles reported HCPs' lack of knowledge about IPV protocols. The dominant attitude reported was a preference to treat the presenting health complaint and avoid discussing IPV. Finally, 30% of articles reported HCPs' lack of training as the main barrier.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p> <p>Our paper concluded that there is a lack of research in understanding the knowledge, attitudes, and barriers surrounding HCPs in the MENA region and IPV. This scoping review highlights the need for further research, informing interventions, and training for HCPs in the region.</p>
