The diversity and distribution of introduced plant species reflects eight thousand years of settlement history
<p>Human population has affected natural ecosystems since prehistoric times in many ways, causing disturbances in existing ecosystems and creating novel habitats, and altering the colonisation and extinction rates with potentially long-lasting effects on biodiversity. Here, we explored the pervasive effects of past human occupancy on present-day diversity and the distribution of plant species introduced by humans in the distant past – archaeophytes – at the regional spatial scale. We analysed spatial relations between the present-day species richness of archaeophytes and native flora, the environmental setting, archaeological evidence, and the relationship between the residence time of archaeophytes and their regional range size. We used fine-scaled gridded information on plant diversity and archaeological records for the period 6000 BCE to 1000 CE summarised as average occupancy probability (AOP) in Czechia, Central Europe. The proportion of archaeophytes in local flora positively correlated to AOP. Variation partitioning revealed largely overlapping effects of AOP, environmental conditions, and present-day land use on the relative diversity of archaeophytes in local flora. The relationship between the minimum residence time of introduced species and their regional range size was weak and non-significant.</p> <p>Synthesis. Our results suggest that the present-day regional diversity of archaeophytes mirrors the intensity of past human settlement. However, the main underlying mechanism is the dispersal and environmental filtering of non-native species pools, while dispersal limitation plays a minor role in the regional patterns of archaeophyte diversity. </p>
Spat settlement and growth of blue mussels on longlines in a Faroese fjord
<p>Settlement and growth of blue mussels on three kinds of spat settlement ropes were tested. Fuzzy rope, Trawl and a flat rope commonly used as spat collectors at mussel farms in Denmark. The settlement on the flat rope was very poor, with only a few individuals so the data set consists blue mussel density on the two other spat collectors. The spat collectors were deployed at 0-15 m depth for three years with no restocking. Supplementary information for: Multisensory integration by polymodal sensory neurons dictates settlement in actinulae larvae
<div> <div> <div> <p>Multisensory integration (MSI) combines information from more than one sensory modality to elicit behaviors distinct from unisensory behaviors. MSI is best understood in animals with complex brains and specialized centers for parsing sensory information, but the dispersive larvae of sessile marine invertebrates utilize multimodal environmental sensory stimuli to base irreversible settlement decisions on, and most lack complex brains. Here, we examined the sensory determinants of settlement in actinula larvae of the hydrozoan <em>Ectopleura</em> <em>crocea</em> (Cnidaria), which possess a diffuse nerve net. A factorial settlement study revealed that photo-, chemo-, and mechano-sensory cues each influence the settlement response, which was complex and dependent on specific combinations of cues, therefore indicating MSI. Mechanosensory cues either inhibited or enhanced settlement rates depending on the presence or absence of chemical and light cues in the environment. Sensory gene expression over development peaked with developmental competence to settle, which in actinulae, requires cnidocyte discharge. Transcriptome analyses also highlighted several deep homological links between cnidarian and bilaterian mechano- chemo- and photo-sensory pathways. Fluorescent in situ hybridization studies of candidate transcripts suggested cellular partitioning of sensory function among the few cell types that comprise the actinula nervous system, where ubiquitous polymodal sensory neurons with putative chemo- and photo-sensitivity interface with mechanoreceptive cnidocytes. We propose that a simple multisensory processing circuit, involving polymodal chemo/photosensory neurons and mechanoreceptive cnidocytes, is sufficient to explain MSI in actinulae settlement. Our study demonstrates that MSI is not exclusive to complex brains, but likely predated and contextualized their evolution.</p> </div> </div> </div>

<p>These are all necessary data to produce 3D models of the excavated Neolithic waterlogged site of Küsnacht-Immensee Dorfplatz in the Canton Schwyz in Switzerland. Sediment deposits and find amounts are given as tables for GIS use in the txt-files. The codes for the semiquantitative description of the sediment are explained in the codes-pdf. The database model for the data acquisition of the sediment deposits and finds is given as accdb. Piles and horizontal wooden elements are given in the excel-file. </p> <p>Sediment profile photographies and the readymade 3D-model are given separately in 10.5281/zenodo.6536246.</p>
Does social information affect the settlement decisions of resident birds in their second breeding attempt? A case study of the Japanese tit (Parus minor)
<p>Individuals may gather information about environmental conditions when deciding where to breed in order to maximize their lifetime fitness. Many studies have shown that birds can rely on social information to select their nest site. The location of active nests and the reproductive success of conspecifics and heterospecifics can provide accurate predictions about the quality of the breeding habitat. Some short-lived species can facultatively reproduce two and/or more times within a breeding season. However, few studies have focused on how multiple-brooding individuals select nest sites for their second breeding attempts. In this study, we use long-term data to test whether the Japanese tit (<em>Parus</em> <em>minor</em>) can use social information from conspecifics and/or heterospecifics to select a nest site for the second breeding attempt. Our results showed that the nest boxes occupied by tits on their second breeding attempt tended to be surrounded by more breeding conspecific nests, first-breeding successful conspecific nests, and fewer first-breeding failed conspecific nests than the nest boxes that remained unoccupied (the control group). However, the numbers of breeding heterospecific nests, successful heterospecific nests, and failed heterospecific nests did not differ between the nest boxes occupied by tits on their second breeding attempt and the unoccupied nest boxes. Furthermore, the tits with local successful breeding experience tended to choose areas with more first-breeding successful conspecific nests than those without successful breeding experience. Thus, we suggest that conspecifics' but not heterospecifics' social information within the same breeding season is the major factor influencing the nest site selection of Japanese tits during second breeding attempts.</p>

Growth and species identification (<em>O. edulis</em> versus <em>M. gigas</em>) were documented. Data was collected from the Swedish west coast in 2020.</p>

Settlement-Era Gridded Tree Composition, Northeastern US: Level 2
This is a data product of the estimated composition of tree taxa at the time of European and Euro-American settlement of the northeastern United States. Composition is defined as the proportion of stems larger than approximately 20 cm diameter at breast height in 22 taxonomic groupings, generally at the genus level. The data come from settlement survey records that provide raw data that are transcribed and then aggregated spatially, giving count data. The domain is divided into two regions, eastern (Maine to Ohio) and western (Indiana to Minnesota). Public Land Survey point data in the western region are aggregated to a regular 8 km grid, while data in the eastern region, from Town Proprietor Surveys, are aggregated at the township level in irregularly-shaped local administrative units. The product is based on a Bayesian statistical model fit to the count data that estimates composition on a regular 8 km grid. The statistical model allows us to estimate composition at locations with no data and to smooth over noise caused by limited counts in locations with data. Critically, it also allows us to quantify uncertainty in our composition estimates. We expect this data product to be useful for understanding the state of vegetation in the northeastern United States prior to large-scale European settlement. In addition to specific regional questions, the data product can also serve as a baseline against which to investigate how forests and ecosystems change after intensive settlement.
