Data for Measurement report: Air pollution emission factors of inland river ships under compliance with the 10 parts per million limit for sulfur content in fuel

Since July 1, 2019, China’s domestic diesel fuel has been limited to 10 ppm of sulfur. Hence, to explore the applicability of the “sniffer” method and the distribution and level of inland river ships (IRSs) emission factors (EFs) under this limitation, we installed “sniffer” monitoring equipment, from August 2020 to June 2022, at the Gezhou Dam of the Yangtze River in China and monitored emissions from 8,238 IRSs in total passing through the lock. We partnered with the maritime department to select 100 ships passing through the lock to extract fuel oilsamples for direct fuel sulfur content detection, which determined the true fuel sulfur content of the passing ships. fuel sulfur content.

The “sniffer” monitoring equipment included SO2, CO2, NO, and NO2 gas sensors, PM2.5 and PM10 particulate matter sensors, as well as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors.

Underlying data of Impact of shipping temperature on cell viability and T cell responses to bacterial antigens

Abstract

Background: Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) secretion by T cells is a key correlate of immune protection against many pathogens including tuberculosis and the neglected tropical disease melioidosis. Clinical studies in tropical regions of immune responses to pathogens and vaccine monitoring studies require the collection of samples in resource-limited rural areas and subsequent shipment to central laboratories for downstream assays and long-term storage. Here, we studied the impact of two different shipping temperatures on the viability, composition and function of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) using multi-colour flow cytometry and IFN-g enzyme-linked immunospot assay (IFN-g ELISpot), in order to provide guidance on sample shipment conditions for future clinical studies.

Methods: Paired peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) samples from recovered melioidosis patients were stored in liquid nitrogen (-196°C) and then shipped from Bangkok, Thailand to Oxford, UK at either -80°C (dry ice) or -196°C (dry shipper). After thawing, cell viability and composition were assessed by flow cytometry and antigen specific responses to Burkholderia pseudomallei (BP) were measured using IFN-g ELISpot.

Results: We observed modest lowering of viability in the majority of samples and a reduction in IFN-g responses to BP which correlated to a decrease of monocytes and NK cells in samples shipped at -80°C compared to -196°C. Despite being lower in magnitude antigen-specific responses remained detectable in the majority of samples.

Conclusions:Here we demonstrate that shipment of cryopreserved PBMC at -196°C has a benefit on cell viability, recovery and T cell responses to bacterial antigens, although useful information can still be obtained from samples shipped at -80°C, thus providing important guidance for sample management in future clinical trials.

NOBEL-BOX: A Ship-Based Low-Cost Instrument for Real-Time Ocean Monitoring and Analysis

This data is the measurement result obtained from the NOBEL-BOX instrument. The principle of NOBEL-BOX is to attach sensors in a container connected to a microcontroller and then measure directly. This data results from measurements using fresh water and sea water mixed to see the response from NOBEL BOX. Furthermore, data was also obtained from sea measurements in Pangandaran, West Java, Indonesia. These measurements include pH, water and water temperature, dissolved oxygen, TDS, and salinity. The use of this parameter is to see the condition of the sea so that it becomes a reference in mitigating and managing the ocean.

Data for: Multi-campaign ship and aircraft observations of marine cloud condensation nuclei, and droplet concentrations

In-situ marine cloud droplet number concentrations (CDNCs), cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and CCN proxies, based on particle sizes and optical properties, are accumulated from seven field campaigns, ACTIVATE, NAAMES, CAMP2EX, ORACLES, SOCRATES, MARCUS, and CAPRICORN2. Each campaign involves aircraft measurements, ship-based measurements, or both. Measurements are collected over the North and Central Atlantic, Indo-Pacific, and Southern Oceans, representing a range of clean to polluted conditions in various climate regimes. With the large range of environmental conditions sampled, this collection of data is ideal for testing satellite remote detection methods of CDNC and CCN in marine environment. Remote measurement methods are key to expanding the available data, in these difficult to reach regions of the Earth, and improving our understanding of aerosol-cloud interactions. Additional particle composition and continental tracers are included to identify potential contributing CCN source. Several of these campaigns, include both High Spectral Resolution Lidar and polarimetric imaging measurements that will be the basis for the next generation of space-based remote sensors and, thus, can be utilized as satellite surrogates.

Raw stable water isotope measurements in water vapour at 8 m a.s.l. on the starboard side of the ship, made in the austral summer of 2016/2017 during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

Dataset abstract

This dataset includes the raw data of stable water vapour isotope (δ18O, δ2H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements at a height of approximately 8 meters above sea level taken in the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometer L2130-i mounted on the starboard side of the ship. L2130-i was operated only during two months in February and March 2017 from Hobart (Australia) to Cape Town (South Africa). This data has to be calibrated using the calibration runs and applying an appropriate calibration procedure following the IAEA guide lines.

Two similar datasets also measuring stable water isotopes (SWIs) in water vapour were collected during the same expedition and can be distinguished from this dataset due to the height of the measurement collection (at 8 m a.s.l and 13.5 m a.s.l). The three ACE datasets of SWIs in water vapour are described and compared in Thurnherr et al. (2020).

Dataset contents

leg*/HIDS2018-yyyymmdd-hhmmssZ-DataLog_User.dat, data file, comma-separated values

data_file_header.txt, metadata, text format

README.txt, metadata, text format

Dataset license

This raw stable water isotope measurements dataset is made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) whose full description can be found at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0

Shipping Container Chassis in the U.S.

The University of New Orleans Transportation Institute (UNOTI) examined the issues surrounding the current state of international chassis utilization in the United States (U.S.). The international chassis system in the U.S. is unique compared to global chassis utilization where the motor carriers, the freight customers, or off-site terminals provide chassis. However in the U.S., the divestment of international chassis by ocean carriers, which began in 2009, resulted in three major international chassis leasing companies linked to the foreign carriers. These lessors are the American shippers’ predominant provider of international chassis. The extra cost associated with the lack of international chassis lessor competition profits the foreign ocean carrier lines while raising costs for domestic consumers.
