New Data Types in Social Science Research and Data Archives
<p>During the CESSDA event "Strengthening and Widening of the European Infrastructure of Social Science Data Archives" in Skopje, North Macedonia on 5-6 November 2019, Libby Bishop presented on New Data Types in Social Science Research and Data Archives. </p> <p>The talk addressed four questions: What are researchers doing with social media and other data? What are repositories currently doing to hold and share new forms data? Are there useful resources for repository staff, and what next steps are planned? What are repositories’ responsibilities in the broader debates? It is challenging to share data (consistent with Open Science and FAIR principles) while also meeting obligations to obey laws and protect confidentiality. Whereas the ethical procedures for “researcher-generated” data, such as surveys and interviews are well-established, no such consensus exists for social media and other data-in-the-wild. Even the basic conception of whether virtual spaces are public or private remains contested among researchers and the public. The talk delineated the key ethical issues of this debate and described practical solutions that some data repositories currently offer. To date, these solutions strictly interpret legal restrictions placed on data sharing. </p> <p> </p> <p>Alongside the presentation, also a video introducing these issues is available. Dataset of the study "Bridging cultural studies and learning science: An investigation of social media use for Holocaust memory and education in the digital age"
<p>This Zenodo item contains the dataset of the study: Manca, S. (2020). “Bridging cultural studies and learning science: An investigation of social media use for Holocaust memory and education in the digital age".</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>Along with advances in communication technology that are making new forms of historical memorialization and education available, social media are researched as valuable tools for supporting forms of digital memory and for engaging students and teachers about historical knowledge and moral education. This study aims to map the current state of Holocaust remembrance and Holocaust education and to identify main topics of research in the two areas. It adopts a mixed-method approach that combines qualitative analysis with bibliometric approaches to review publications that use social media for digital memory and history education about the Holocaust. Results based on 28 publications reveal several research topics and that, despite some common theoretical references, the two subfields mostly rely on separate conceptual backgrounds. While Holocaust remembrance is a well-established research field, there are few studies and a lack of theoretical elaboration about social media use for teaching and learning about the Holocaust.</p>
A Taxonomy of Contemporary Arctic Studies under Social Sciences and Humanities Domain
<p>This database serves a list of the scientific studies related to the developments in the Arctic Region from the perspective of Social Sciences and Humanities. It analyzes the Arctic studies considering their structural features, related key words, relevance to PESTEL-DEL analysis (extension of the well-known PESTEL methodology by including the dimensions of Defense-Security, Energy and Logistics), geographical coverage and methodological framework. The database covers 169 most recent scientific studies published between 2007 and 2019. It addresses topics including political issues and disputes in the Arctic Region, potential economic activities as well as economic opportunities and challenges, social and ecological structure of the region, technological developments based on the changing conditions, environmental concerns as a result of climate change and new industrial activities, legal disputes regarding continental shelf and EEZ, national defense and security efforts of the actors in the Arctic, and potential energy reserves and new logistics routes that have become accessible due to melting glaciers. </p>

Raw and aggregated data for the study introduced in the article "Citing and referencing habits in Medicine and Social Sciences journals in 2019"
<p>This dataset contains all the raw data and aggregated data subject of the study introduced in the article "Citing and referencing habits in Medicine and Social Sciences journals in 2019". The study is based on the bibliographic and citation data contained in 213 articles published in 46 journals in two subject areas: Medicine and Social Sciences. The articles contained a total amount of 9,911 bibliographic references and 16,193 mentions and quotations overall. In particular, the raw data are about 27 journals, 132 articles, 5,340 bibliographic references, 8,400 mentions and 5 quotations in Medicine, and 19 journals, 81 articles, 4,571 bibliographic references, 6,953 mentions and 835 quotations in Social Sciences.</p> <p>The dataset is composed of three files:</p> <ul> <li>the file "medicine-journals.csv" contains the raw data of the articles published in Medicine journals;</li> <li>the file "social-sciences-journals.csv" contains the raw data of the articles published in Social Sciences journals;</li> <li>the file "aggregated-data-medicine-social-sciences.csv" contains the aggregated data created considering the raw data in the previous files, which have been used to creating all the tables and figures in the article.</li> </ul>

<p>This dataset contains the thirteenth edition of the <em>Flemish Academic Bibliography for the Social Sciences and Humanities (VABB-SHW)</em>, a database of academic publications from the social sciences and humanities authored by researchers affiliated to Flemish universities (<a href="https://www.ecoom.be/en/data-collections/vabb-shw">more information</a>). Publications in the database are used as one of the parameters of the Flemish performance-based research funding system. Only approved publications are included in this dataset.</p>

Interdisciplinary fluency, engaging with community-based modeling, and paying attention to power dynamics as well as impacts and implications are all important at all stages of modeling work. Epistemic consistency is important throughout model development (the three middle steps of model choice, construction, and description) and communication, while triangulation and mixed methods contribute largely to model development. The data biography is most important in the model description stage, though one may need to keep a journal and track details of the model development process in order to create the data biography. Treating uncertainty as openness is most important in model communication and application; however, this could feed back into iterative model development steps as well, or one could design models to aid in treating uncertainty as openness.
Metadata model with controlled vocabularies proposed for the Social Sciences domain
<p>This dataset is related to the MSc work "Descrição de dados de investigação: requisitos de investigadores para modelos de metadados na Psicologia e Ciências da Educação", where, by observing practices, identifying needs, knowing work processes and identifying expectations, and trying to take advantage of researchers' knowledge about the importance of research data in their activity, we have analyzed procedures for accessing, storing and preserving research data. We also have studied models and workflows for managing datasets of completed projects. Considering the recommendations of Data Curation, we proposed the description model that was later expanded with specific examples of controlled vocabularies used in the Psychology scientific domain.</p>
