Sketching Sounds Dataset
<p>This dataset contains sketches produced by 88 participants in a perceptual study. Participants sketched their associations with 20 synthesised sounds that are included in the dataset. Next to the sketches created on the sounds, the dataset features 2 test sketches (with the keys <em>calmSound</em> and <em>noisySound</em>) that each participant created. The keys for each sound-sketch are in the format <em>drawingInterface_ + sound ID</em> (e.g. <em>drawingInterface_a7ecc7b965e2e7888e2df382514ad101</em>). Underwater sounds, including killer whale and humpback whale vocalizations, recorded in northern Norway in January 2023
<p>Dataset of underwater acoustic recordings obtained during the expedition “Orcalize” that took place in Skjervøy in northern Norway from 29<sup>th</sup> December 2022 till 6<sup>th</sup> January 2023. The data contains vocalizations from killer whales and songs from humpback whales which gather in the local fjords during the winter months to feed on herring. We recorded in the band of 20 Hz – 60 kHz with calibrated hydrophones arranged in a compact tetrahedral array that we deployed over board of a motorboat. In total we provide 16 files of continuous recordings with duration from several minutes to over one hour. The total dataset is about 7 hours 37 minutes long and the memory size is 62.8 GB. Test experiments with distributed acoustic sensing and hydrophone arrays for locating underwater sounds.
<p>Whales and dolphins rely on sound for navigation and communication, making them an intriguing subject for studying language evolution. Traditional hydrophone arrays have been used to record their acoustic behavior, but optical fibers have emerged as a promising alternative. This study explores the use of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), a technique that detects local stress in optical fibers, for underwater sound recording. An experiment was conducted in Lake Zurich, where a fiber-optic cable and a self-made hydrophone array were deployed. A test signal was broadcasted at various locations, and the resulting data was synchronized and consolidated into files. Analysis revealed distinct frequency responses in the DAS channels and provided insights into sound propagation in the lake. Challenges related to cable sensitivity, sample rate, and broadcast fidelity were identified. This dataset serves as a valuable resource for advancing acoustic sensing techniques in underwater environments, especially for studying marine mammal vocal behavior.</p>
Sound samples for the evaluation of source-level blending between violins
<p>The repository includes monophonically rendered sound files used in the source-level blending evaluation. The sound samples provided are recorded from a violin ensemble performance at Detmold Concert House as a part of an investigation on the influence of acoustic environment on the impression of blending [1]. DPA 4099 clip-on microphones were used to capture individual violins in the performance.</p> <p>Each sound sample consists of two violin signals that were rendered by downmixing to a monophonic format at 44.1kHz/16-bit depth. The impression of blending between the two violins in each sample was rated by a group of trained listeners, and the results are provided in the file, 'Sound sample_description'. Please refer to the publication for more details on the performance of the violin ensemble. Also, please cite the publication if these samples are used for scientific evaluations.</p> <p>In addition to the sound samples, three Matlab figures that demonstrate the cluster distribution of MFCC features extracted from sound samples (that are classified into blended and non-blended classes) transformed using Principal component Analysis (PCA), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and t-Stochastic Neighbourhood Embedding (t-SNE), are included for 3D visualization. A sequence of four hydrographic surveys were performed on June 1, 2001, along an east-to-west transect through Doboy Sound near Sapelo Island, Georgia. Vertical CTD profiles were collected at 2km intervals from 0km to 12km along the transect during various tidal regimes. Conductivity, temperature, pressure and optical backscatter were measured, and depth, salinity and sigma-t were calculated for each profile. Data values collected on the upcast were deleted, and the remaining data were averaged within 0.5m depth bins and interpolated to produce a smooth profile for contouring. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER quarterly hydrographic monitoring program.

Observations were logged at 30 minute intervals by moored Sea-Bird Electronics MicroCAT 37-SM data loggers and downloaded approximately bimonthly. Salinity, depth and sigma-t were calculated from the measured parameters using standard UNESCO algorithms. This data set was collected as part of the GCE-LTER Project continuous salinity, temperature and water level monitoring program.
