Southern Hemisphere winds, pressure, and temperature over the 20th century from proxy-data assimilation
<p>This archive contains four reconstructions of annually resolved zonal surface wind (us), sea level pressure (psl), and surface temperature (tas) anomalies in the Southern Hemisphere over the period 1900 to 2005 CE. The anomaly reference period is 1961-1990. </p> <p>The reconstructions are generated using the Last Millennium Reanalysis data assimilation framework (Hakim et al., 2016; Tardif et al., 2019). The proxies assimilated come from a global database comprising the PAGES2k database (PAGES2k Consortium, 2017), additional ice core accumulation records (Thomas et al., 2017), and additional coral records (Sanchez et al., 2021). We use four climate models to produce the four reconstructions:</p> <ol> <li>the iCESM Last Millennium Ensemble (“CESM LM”, Brady et al., 2019, Stevenson et al., 2019)</li> <li>the HadCM3 Last Millennium Ensemble (“HadCM3 LM”, Collins et al., 2001)</li> <li>the CESM1 Large Ensemble (“LENS”; Kay et al., 2015)</li> <li>the CESM1 Pacific Pacemaker Ensemble (“PACE”; Schneider and Deser, 2018).</li> </ol> <p>The four reconstructions are named after the prior that is used. The last millennium ensemble of simulations include natural forcings only and the LENS and PACE ensemble of simulations include historical external forcings. For each reconstruction, there are three netCDF files containing the ensemble mean (mean of 100 ensemble members) for each climate field. More details can be found in O'Connor et al. Wind envelope at 300 hPa in the Southern Hemisphere during austral summer between 1979-2020
<p>The datasets contain wind envelope data at 300 hPa from the Southern hemisphere during austral summer (December-March) between 1979-2020. The envelope was obtained using the methodology of Zimin et al 2003, retaining only the local zonal wavenumbers correspondant to the southern hemisphere transients (Trenberth 1981) using datasets of meridional wind speed at 300 hPa from ERA-5 and NCEP DOE 2 reanalysis .The resolution of both datasets is 2.5º x 2.5º with daily frequency. </p> <p>Both datasets contain a 4 dimensional array in which the first column is the day of the December-March season, such as the first day is the 1st of Decemeber and day 121 is the 31th of March. Second column indicates the season (from 1979-2020, starting at December), and the last two dimensions are the latitude and longitud coordinates.</p>

Data from: Does migration promote or inhibit diversification? A case study involving the dominant radiation of temperate Southern Hemisphere freshwater fishes
<p>While theory predicts that dispersal is a pivotal influence on speciation and extinction rates, it can have contradictory effects on each, such that empirical studies are needed to quantify its role. In many studies, dispersal reduction appears to promote diversification, although some analyses of migratory species suggest otherwise. Here we test for a relationship between migratory status and diversification rate within the dominant radiation of temperate Southern Hemisphere freshwater fishes, the Galaxiidae. We reconstructed a molecular phylogeny for the group, comprising >95% of extant lineages, and applied State-dependent Speciation Extinction models to estimate speciation, extinction, and diversification rates. In contrast to some previous studies, we revealed higher diversification rates in non-migratory lineages. The reduced gene flow experienced by non-migratory galaxiids appears to have increased diversification under conditions of allopatry or local adaptation. Migratory galaxiid lineages, by contrast, are genetically homogeneous within landmasses, but may also be rarely able to colonise other landmasses in the temperate Southern Hemisphere. The life history state exhibiting higher diversification likely reflects the spatial context of the study system relative to species dispersal abilities, by means of the intermediate dispersal model; the accurate quantification of dispersal abilities will aid in our understanding of these likely interactions.</p>
Temporal and spatial differences in the post-breeding behaviour of a ubiquitous Southern Hemisphere seabird, the common diving petrel
<p>The non-breeding period plays a major role in seabird survival and population dynamics. However, our understanding of the migratory behaviour, moulting and feeding strategies of non-breeding seabirds is still very limited, especially for small-sized species. The present study investigated the post-breeding behaviour of three distant populations (Kerguelen Archipelago, south-eastern Australia, New Zealand) of the common diving petrel (<i>Pelecanoides urinatrix</i>), an abundant, widely distributed zooplanktivorous seabird breeding throughout the southern Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. The timing, geographical destination and activity pattern of birds were quantified through geolocator deployments during the post-breeding migration, while moult pattern of body feathers was investigated using stable isotope analysis. Despite the high energetic cost of flapping flight, all the individuals quickly travelled long distances (> ~2500 km) after the end of the breeding season, targeting oceanic frontal systems. The three populations, however, clearly diverged spatially (migration pathways and destinations), and temporally (timing and duration) in their post-breeding movements, as well as in their period of moult. Philopatry to distantly separated breeding grounds, different breeding phenologies, and distinct post-breeding destinations suggest that the common diving petrel populations have a high potential for isolation, and hence, speciation. These results contribute to improving knowledge of ecological divergence and evolution between populations and inform the challenges of conserving migratory species.</p>
AVATAR-Soils Database: A Database of 137Cs and 239+240Pu in Equatorial and Southern Hemisphere Reference Soils
<p>A total of 1122 reference soil profiles with <sup>137</sup>Cs and <sup>239+240</sup>Pu data from 135 publications were included to build a database under the AVATAR Project (“A reVised dATing framework for quantifying geomorphological processes during the AnthRopocene”), with a focus on compiling available data from the Equatorial and Southern Hemisphere regions. The AVATAR-Soils Database covers parts of the continents of Asia and the Sub-Saharan Africa, and the whole of Oceania and South America. The <sup>137</sup>Cs (decay-corrected to 2024) and <sup>239+240</sup>Pu data extracted from the literature include the inventory (in Bq/m<sup>2</sup>) and average activities (in Bq/kg) of the soil profile collected, and the <sup>137</sup>Cs/<sup>239+240</sup>Pu activity and <sup>239</sup>Pu/<sup>240</sup>Pu atomic ratios. In addition to the <sup>137</sup>Cs and <sup>239+240</sup>Pu data, the associated spatial, climatic, and topographic parameters and sampling details were also added in the database. Southern Hemisphere coasts are biologically connected by frequent, long-distance rafting events
<p>Globally, species distributions are shifting in response to environmental change, and those that cannot disperse risk extinction. Many taxa, including marine species, are showing poleward range shifts as the climate warms. In the Southern Hemisphere, however, circumpolar oceanic fronts can present formidable barriers to dispersal<sup>4</sup>. Although passive, southward movement of species across this barrier has been considered unlikely, the recent discovery of buoyant kelp rafts on beaches in Antarctica demonstrates that such journeys are possible. Rafting is a key process by which diverse taxa – including terrestrial and coastal marine species – can cross oceans. Kelp rafts can carry passengers, and thus can act as vectors for long-distance dispersal of coastal organisms. The small numbers of kelp rafts previously found in Antarctica do not, however, shed much light on the frequency of such dispersal events. We here use a combination of high-resolution phylogenomic analyses (>220,000 SNPs) and oceanographic modelling to show that long-distance biological dispersal events in the Southern Ocean are not rare. We document tens of kelp (<em>Durvillaea antarctica</em>) rafting events of thousands of kilometres each, over several decades (1950 – 2019), with many kelp rafts apparently still reproductively viable. Modelling of dispersal trajectories from genomically-inferred source locations shows that some distant landmasses are particularly well connected, for example South Georgia and New Zealand, and the Kerguelen Islands and Tasmania. Our findings illustrate the power of genomic approaches to track, and modelling to show frequencies, of long-distance dispersal events.</p> <p> </p>
