Dendrometer studies for stand volume and height measurements of trees of the western US, 1976 to 1993
Dendrometry is used to get an accurate estimate of volume and height for individual trees. Volume tables or regressions may be generated. This method accurately accounts for taper by measuring at consecutive points up the bole.
Disturbance effects on soil processes in the Andrews Experimental Forest (1995 Stand Age Study)
This study was designed to determine how edges generated by clear-cutting old-growth forests influence patterns of soil carbon and nitrogen cycling and the distribution of ectomycorrhizal mats and to determine how these patterns change with time after harvest. A secondary objective was to measure how clear-cutting within different climatic regimes influenced soil nitrogen and carbon cycling.

These data provide an inventory of the mass of forest floor organic matter stored within various forest types. This data is used to determine total organic matter, carbon, and nutrient stores in forests.
Soil respiration associated with ectomycorrhizal mats in an old-growth stand along lower Lookout Creek, HJ Andrews Experimental Forest (2008-2009)
Comparisons of respiration rate and environmental variables for mat and non-mat soil were conducted between July 2008 to Nov 2009 in a 0.1ha plot adjacent lower Lookout Creek, approximately 700m downstream from Lookout Camp (44 deg 13”25’N, 122 deg 15”30’W, 484m above sea level). The predominant overstory species are Psuedotsuga menziesii, Tsuga heterophylla, and Thuja Plicata. Associated ectomycorrhizal communities were measured over the 1.5 year period and data collection for the study is complete. Soil respiration was measured using LiCOR instrumentation, and analyses were performed computationally by correlating soil respiration with known environmental metrics (moisture, temperature, etc.) measured in other studies (TW006, MV001, etc.).
Tree stand structure summary at Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest LTER sites
We measure trees and shrubs within 50 x 60 m permanent plots at LTER research sites within the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest, as a means to monitor vegetation change and to estimate productivity. The 27 LTER research sites represent three replicates each of six successional stages of primary succession on the floodplain of the Tanana River and three stages of succession following wildfire in the uplands. All trees and tall shrubs within the plot are stem mapped, and the dbh is measured at least every 5 years. The condition of each tree is assessed at the time of measurement and following major disturbance events. Band dendrometers have been placed on select trees at each site where applicable. Litterfall and seedfall are collected and measured annually. White spruce seedlings are mapped and their heights measured every 2 years within the tree plots at younger successional stages. The DBH of alders and willows are measured. Shrub heights are measured annually at young floodplain stands. Changes in species composition through succession are a function of life history traits modified by facilitative and competitive interactions. Vegetation-caused changes in resource (light, nutrients, and moisture)availability during succession control vegetation biomass, productivity, and organic matter and nutrient distribution.
Black spruce needle nitrogen concentration from 5 stands in 1999
We collected black spruce needle from several sites located near Fairbanks Ak, and Delta, Ak in August 1999 (Sites designated here as S1, S2, and S3) were located in Fairbanks (64o40?N, 148o15?W), Alaska (S1: 64o52.164? N, 147o51.462? W; S2: 64o52.058? N, 147o51.378? W; S3: 64o51.603? N, 147o52.789? W) with 2 additional sites (S4, S5) in Delta, Alaska (64010? N, 145030? W). In each stand, 30 trees were randomly selected for sampling. Within each tree, five shoots were collected from the southern aspect of the mid-canopy height from each of the following age classes: 0-, 1-, 4-, 9-, and 19-years old. In two of the Fairbanks stands (S2, S3), 19-year old needles were not present. A total of 690 samples over the five stands include 150 samples per stand in three stands (S1, S4, S5) and 120 samples per stand in the other two stands (S2, S3). Needles were returned to the lab and nitrogen content was determined. We used a three-factor nested analysis of variance (ANOVA) to evaluate differences in needle N concentration among the ages of needles on a tree, among trees nested within a stand, and among stands. Ages and stands were treated as fixed factors and tree was treated as a random factor. The ANOVA and means testing for these differences used Proc GLM in the SAS statistical package with needle N content as the dependent variable and needle age, tree, and stand as independent variables. The GLM procedure handled the problem of missing treatment combinations within the ANOVA. Type III sum of squares was used to test the effects of factors without interactions
Summary of environmental and stand characteristics of thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains from 2006-2007.
This dataset contains a summary of environmental and stand characteristics of thinleaf alder dominated along the Tanana River floodplains. Environmental data for each site include terrace height, total thickness of organic layers, depth of uppermost organic layer, soil pH, soil C, N, and P, and soil N/P ratio. Also included are mean thinleaf alder foliar C, N, and P concentrations and foliar N/P ratio for a sumbsample of sites. Estimates of stand age, based on the age of the oldest alder, are available for a subsample of sites. Other stand characteristics include canopy cover, stem density and basal area of thinleaf alder, willows, balsam poplar, and white spruce, and % of alder stems infected with a fungal stem canker at various degrees of disease severity.

This dataset contains leaf, aboveground stem, and fruit carbon and N concentration and natural abundance isotope data for new and old tissue fractions of common and rare plant species in burned and unburned black spruce forest stands. Stands were located in either Caribou-Poker Creek or Delta Junction, in either unburned areas, or in areas burned in 1999 fires. Biomass was collected between 2000 and 2001 in mid-July at peak biomass.

This dataset includes forest stand structure. Project summary: Specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area per unit dry mass) is a key canopy structural characteristic, a measure of photosynthetic capacity, and an important input into many terrestrial process models. Although many studies have examined SLA variation, relatively few data exist from high latitude, climate-sensitive permafrost regions. We measured SLA and soil and topographic properties across a boreal forest permafrost transition, in which forest composition changed as permafrost deepened from 54 to >150 cm over 75 m hillslope transects in Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed, Alaska. This is an exploratory study to begin understanding SLA variation and controls thereof in a non-contiguous permafrost system.
